Game 115 Open Thread: August 5 2008

Los Angeles Dodgers at St. Louis Cardinals, Aug 5, 2008 8:15 PM EDT

Billingsley Carpenter
11-9, 3.05 0-0, 2.25

carp's first start in st louis in 16 months --- and just the second since his masterful performance in game 3 of the 2006 world series. carp has a career era of 2.08 in busch III (not counting that game); he has faced the dodgers 3 times and won all 3 starts.

the dodgers enter the series with a run differential of 26; the cardinals, +29.

To echo what was said in the other thread

why do they refuse to DL Ankiel? Does this team actually like playing a man short?

That lineup still scores enough to win tonight, even with AK and Izturis in the same lineup. Like I said in one of those fanposts, the Cards always seem to find a way to win when I am blacked out.

So I was curious to see if it only seemed that way. here are the results from games I was blacked out:

April 16 vs MIl W 5-4 Jun 18 vs K.C L 2-3
April 17 vs Mil L 3-5 Jun 19 vs K.C L 1-4
May 13 vs Pit L 4-8 Jun 24 vs Det W 8-4
May 14 vs Pit W 5-1 Jun 25 vs Det L 7-8
May 27 vs Hou L 2-8 Jun 26 vs Det L 2-3
May 28 vs Hou W 6-1 Jul 1 vs NYM L 4-7
May 29 vs Hou W 3-2 Jul 2 vs NYM W 8-7
Jun 17 vs KC L 1-2 Jul 3 vs NYM L 1-11

Yikes! That is 6-10 and some pretty damn painful losses. I guess that pain is just easier to forget when you don’t have to watch it.

Reverse the trend tonight Carp!

I'm guessing.....

They didn’t think Ank would be out this long. Turns out they were wrong, but that happens. Gotta believe he is within a day or two at this point. Hopefully.

by SoonerfanTU on Aug 5, 2008 7:18 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Can't they?

Retroactively DL him so that he can come back 15 days after he last played? That would allow them to bring someone up in the meantime.

Good call

They couldn’t if they want him back soon. Good call.

by stlfan on Aug 5, 2008 7:24 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's what Im thinking too

Plus, barton was just starting his Rehab when he got hurt. But I think they just expected him to only be out a day or two.

by Evilfrog on Aug 5, 2008 7:20 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It wasn't just this time though

This is third time this season Ank has been held out for an extended period of time. I would think that since this has happened before they might think it is a good idea to let DL Ank and let him get better, rest up, something?

I still don't see why you extend a pitcher...

when he’s already signed for another season. Look what happed with CC (Chris Carpenter). Very few pitcher pitch their whole career without some kind of injury and/or surgery. I like Haren, and wouldn’t consider him an injury concern but…

nights like this, albert should bat a true fourth. too many ab’s with 2 out and no body on. he hits 4th and he hits with men on or he leads off and his high on-base can make a difference. especially with line-ups like tonight.

it is no longer a batted ball. I think once it hitsthe batter it is a dead ball and he is out.

Noooooo

Line drives are not in his repertoire. It would be, ahem, ghastly, if he were to actually hit the ball squarely, sending with more force than normal towards a waiting glove. Proper Cardinal’s middle infielders must simply send the ball towards outs in what must be best described as a trickle, or a slow roll.

Why not? Kid as some talent and is a former All Star. Can play multiple positions (he has even played a little outfield). He is not a great fielder, but seems serviceable. I am not sure about his range, but he has pretty good speed so it should be decent.

I think he can immediately replace Iz2 as our #9 hitter.

From the Nats' MLB page a few days ago.....

” Lopez, who was acquired from the Reds on July 13, 2006, was a disappointment with the Nationals. After hitting .281 during the second half of ‘06, Lopez couldn’t get his bat going and was shaky on defense. He hit .245 last year and was hitting .234 at the time of his release.

“It’s disappointing,” Bowden said. “I traded for him twice. I’m a fan of his talent and his ability. It didn’t happen here in Washington. I’m sorry for that and I’m sure he is sorry for that. I love Felipe. We just couldn’t get the talent out on the field.”

There were times when teammates and the front office felt that Lopez didn’t play hard, but Lopez denied it. He said he was often frustrated and it showed on the field.

“For people who play this game, it’s hard when you struggle,” Lopez said. “You roll over a ball and you cuss yourself out down the first-base line. It might seem like I’m not hustling to other people. It’s just frustration.”

Do you

think that Tony puts the hit and run alot in those situations with AP?

by chicagocardfan on Aug 5, 2008 9:52 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

wonder if he's pressing

because he feels he is the best and luddy has better numbers

by sportsman on Aug 5, 2008 10:08 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

was that another hit and run attempt?

AP knew Skip was going and tried to make contact?

by fuegophil on Aug 5, 2008 9:52 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

why would he do that?

if he walked, it wouldn’t have mattered

by jeff_abs on Aug 5, 2008 9:53 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

it was a 3-2 count

If he walked him he would have had the base.

by Evilfrog on Aug 5, 2008 9:53 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I know, but it seems

Like we have had an abnormally high amount of strike em out throw em out dp’s this year; not many successful hit and runs.

TLR may be over thinking things a bit.

by fuegophil on Aug 5, 2008 9:55 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

why does he do that though

I have noticed that too, for some reason he expands his zone on a hit and run when it is a 3-2 count! I have seen him do that too many times

Root for heavy rain

We need a break for a change, like a rain-shortened victory.

did the dishes on the last rain delay...

will this one be just long enough for dinner?

Obama/Pujols 2008.

by davethebutcher on Aug 5, 2008 9:53 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Perfect example of.....

What I was talking about in today’s thread. Pujols takes a fastball down the middle for strike one. Takes 3 balls. Then swings and misses at strikes 2 and 3, 3 which was clearly a ball.

I just don’t remember him doing as much of this in PY’s.

by SoonerfanTU on Aug 5, 2008 9:53 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

May have been a brain cramp there

It happens to the best of ‘em. With runners on the move there is a temptation to swing at bad pitches, just to “protect” them. Even someone as game-savvy as AP might forget that it’s ball four if he doesn’t swing… but it’ll be three years before he forgets it again.

too many that is for sure and it ruins any plans you might have had for the day

What I hate the most is when you have a two hour rain delay and then they cancel the game. That is what happened in the first game of the year

5 IP 3 H 51 total pitches, 33 strikes

Yeah

I’m only watching on Gameday, but it seemed like the Dodgers were putting the first strike into play many times—and getting out And when they let a few strikes go by, they still got out or K’ed. It felt like the old Carp, but you might get a better analysis from someone who actually watched.
