Game 136 overflow

i can't think of a single song about houston. i know songs about el paso, san antonio, wichita falls, galveston, dallas . . . .  also denver, phoenix, wichita, new orleans, and santa fe. but no houston. what's up with that?

go get 'em, cards.

There are probably more songs...

mentioning Houston than St. Louis.

For instance, the dozens of songs using samples from the moon landings.

Dean Martin had a song called Houston.

Google turns up a bunch of others.

I can’t think of any about St. Louis that aren’t a 100 years old.

Tom Waits mentions St. Louis in several of his songs

I don’t know if he has some specific connection to here. He does like to mention places in a lot of his songs….

houston and st. louis

The first Houston lyric that came to mind…..

Heard about Houston? Heard about Detroit?
Heard about Pittsburgh, PA?
You oughta know not to stand by the window
somebody might see you up there
I got some groceries, some peant butter,
to last a couple of days
But I ain’t got no speakers, ain’t got no
headphones, ain’t got no records to play

(and later in the song, my favorite line:
Burned all my notebooks. What good are notebooks?
They won’t help me survive.)

First St. Louis lyric that came to mind (maybe 70 years old):

Now you go through saint looey
Joplin, missouri,
And oklahoma city is mighty pretty.
You see amarillo,
Gallup, new mexico,
Flagstaff, arizona.
Dont forget winona,
Kingman, barstow, san bernandino.

A couple years ago lboros had a running theme in his posts

that you can beat the Cardinals but you can’t be Albert Pujols. Tonight seems to be a good illustration of that.

Anyone else afraid that

since Albert didn’t lead the team to the playoffs by hitting .560 with 102 HRs and 346 RBI’s, that he’s not gonna get the MVP and they’re gonna give it to a crappier player on a contender?

Ok - just got back from the game and obviously it was dissapointing. again.

I have long been a TLR supporter, but sitting there watching the game tonight I was convinced before and after he left Looper in to pitch the 5th. He got out of the previous inning by the skin of his teeth when Yadi picked off the runner at 1st and the double play followed. (I still dont think Skip caught that ball but they didnt show a replay) Looper got crushed in the 1st and they continued to hit the ball hard thereafter. I dont recall a ball that wasnt hit hard off Looper. In the top of the 5th I thought he would PH for Looper who was already at 65 pitches and wasnt fooling anyone. He proceeded to give up the 2 run HR in the bottom of the 5th and those two runs made a big difference on the score board before and after Pujols hit his 2 run jack. I dont know that Thompson would have ptiched a scoreless frame but he looked good when he did come in and I do know that Looper continued to look terrible.

Skip didn't catch the ball

replay clearly showed a trap

i been gone for a week or so..and it seems the season is over now…Gammons on ESPN radio this week said he had the most respect for the Cardinals..they have more injuries than almost any team and when you think they are done surprise you..said he thought theyd run out of gas but has a lot of respect for how they play the game

Things could be worse

In the world I see--you are stalking elk through the damp canyon forests around the ruins of Rockefeller Center. You'll wear leather clothes that will last you the rest of your life. You'll climb the wrist-thick kudzu vines that wrap the Sears Tower. And when you look down, you'll see tiny figures pounding corn, laying strips of venison on the empty carpool lane of some abandoned superhighway.

most recent album “accelerate” has a song called “houston.”

1st line “if the storm doesn’t kill me, the government will.”

katrina reference. seems apropos for the season and gustav.
