Retain and Conquer

I really just don't know what else to say, to be perfectly honest. Az said it all last night when he said the Cardinals had to go out and get the sweep, plain and simple. No time to dilly dally around with anything less.

Well, we won't be seeing the good kind of sweep this series, at least. Whether or not we see the other kind is still entirely up in the air.

How fitting was it that Russ Springer, the team's best reliever this year, was the man on the mound when that ball headed off into the left field seats? I'm sure that some would take issue with the decision to let Springer face Berkman in that situation, with the significant splits that Fat Elvis has, at least power wise. Personally, though, I'm actually inclined to say that it was the exact right decision in that case. I realise that the Crawford Boxes are awfully close, and hell, that's essentially where Berkman has made his living ever since he first saw that short porch.

At the same time, though, I (and many others), have consistently campaigned all year for Tony to use his best reliever when it matters the most, regardless of the handedness matchup or any other such small time nonsense. Russ Springer has been the team's best reliever pretty much all year, and I'm perfectly comfortable with the ship going down with him at the helm. You can obviously make the argument for a different pitcher there, but I think I'm okay with the move. If you're going to get beaten, at least go down using one of your best bullets.

I'm going to have to make this a short one this morning, folks. My apologies.

With that in mind, I thought this morning we might all discuss what players we need to hold on to from the current squad. There will be plenty of time later to talk about what players the Cardinals need to try and go out and acquire this offseason in order to make this thing back into a big time contender, but that's not what I'm interested in this morning. What I want to know is which of the players from this Cardinal team do you think are the most important to retain. Which of this year's players do you feel represent a big part of the team's future?

There are a fair number of free agents coming off the books from this team in the offseason. Who needs to be back if the Cards are going to keep this thing moving in the right direction?

Discuss. Please forgive the brevity.

Yep

Apparently, he lives in Chicago and only comes down to St Louis when the Cards are in town.

I'll take a shot at the free-agent question.

It’ll get my mind off last night’s game, at least. (Not.) BTW, don’t blame pitching for that; the offense should have scored more than 3 runs. Give credit to Wolf, who pitched a terrific game, but still.

Anyway:
Jason LaRue: keep if and only if cheap. He’s an upgrade on Gary Bennett, and Anderson may not be ready yet. If feasible, let them fight it out in spring training.
Felipe Lopez: flush. He’s an upgrade on AK, but not that much of one, and he’s likely not gonna be cheap. Guys like this are “fungible.”
Aaron Miles: flush. Grit has actually been a lot better this year than anyone could have predicted, or even asked for, but he’s fungible too.
Cesar Izturis: keep, surprisingly. There’s nothing in the farm system yet that’s an adequate replacement, and the free-agent crop at shortstop is nothing to write home about.
Kyle Lohse and Braden Looper: try to keep, but not at the expense of a hideous contract. Lohse in particular could very well command a lot more than he’s worth, and the team should not take on an onerous contract. However, if they can work something out with him, I’d rather have him in the rotation than Loop. These are both VERY close calls.
Mark Mulder: thrown in for comic relief…
Jason Isringhausen: comedy has to be offset with tragedy…
Russ Springer: flush. He’s been an asset, but he’s fungible, and he’ll be 40 next year.

Have I missed anyone?

STMF -- no OFs?

Ludwick and Ankiel are both arb eligible. Do you want to keep both? What about Skip, Barton, Mather, Stavinoha?

I would keep Ankiel and Ludwick, and try to package two of the remaining OF for MIF player/prospect, or SP prospect.

To your MIF list, I would flush Adam Kennedy and Iz2. Good defense but absolutely no hope offensively. Brendan Ryan and Barden comparable defensively and much cheaper.

I would be happy to keep either Lohse or Looper. If we could find a way to flush Pinata, I’d be for that.

Totally agree about last night-offense let the team down. Holding HOU to three runs in that joke of a park is plenty of pitching.

"Arb eligible" != "free agent to be."

Both Lud and Ank will be Cardinals next year unless I’m missing something, or unless they’re traded. The question with those two is: does the team try to do something to lock them up beyond their arbitration years? In both cases I’d vote no, even though I’d love to see them stay on the roster for a few years.

by StanTheManFan on Aug 30, 2008 6:48 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I pretty much agree with everything here

I also find myself surprised on Izturis, but unless they can pull off a major surprise deal for a top-flight SS he might as well be back. I would have to say I am leaning a little bit more towards keeping Looper than Lohse as Loop will likely be available for a shorter term and less money. For an equal outlay of years and dollars I would take Lohse, though.

I think they should just move Miles to the front office and make him a roving minor league grit instructor.

Glaus

Another tough loss and the only guy you mention is Springer?

Well, if you want a goat,- hands down – my vote goes to Troy Glaus who needlessly tried to barehand a ground ball, muffed it, and set up the game-tying home run. He had plenty of time to use his glove, as any Little League would know, and throw out the runner, making the third out of the inning and keeping Lohse’s shutout going. in the sixth inning. Instead, he’s got to show off and, as a consequence Lohse gets screwed and the Cards eventually lose. Yet, this guy – for all his bitching at umps and streaky play (mostly not producing) – seems to get a pass from the media and fans.

I hope he apologized to Lohse and the team. He blew the freakin’ game.

Yeah,

the pitch to Newhan was totally awful. Might as well have let him hit off a tee. Not that I am blaming Lohse, I am not into the blame thing. Just another poor showing against a LHP.

Glaus

Anybody here at the game?

If watching on TV it was impossible to tell if Glaus would have been able to throw Pence out even if he were to use his glove on the play. From the get go, it appeard Glaus did not get a good read on the ball so he was forced to try to get an inbetween hop and the ball ended up not hoping up quite as much as he wanted…..

Only people at the game could have seen how close the play would have been…

Anyone at the game?

Besides where was the offense? oh wait Stav and Mather have a combined .275 OBP

He did have a fifth of the teams hits last night

and a third of the teams’ hits against Wolf and went 1 for 3 before being replaced by Skip. Kinda hard to be down on the Stav thing last night.

Options - Ank or Skip v LHP

Ank is terrible right now and Skip isn’t hitting lefties. Putting him in front of Albert meant that pitchers would battle him in the zone not play with border line pitches hoping he’d swing so they could get to Lohse. With the options available, imo this wasn’t that bad of a call. Also allows Ludwick to follow Albert since i heard that houston wasn’t going to pitch much to Albert.

by ubeddie on Aug 30, 2008 5:29 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

hummmmmmm.....

Stav….

I wonder if the Cards may try Phelps in LF when they face LHP from here on out. Stav is just not hacking it and Phelps has more power. And Stav is not that good defensively.

I was at the game

and the play was going to be very close. Probably had to try and barehand it.

As someone who was at the game I gotta say i couldnt believe what i was watching from the bottom of the 7th to the bottom of the 9th. Just amazing. Glaus bobbles a ball and then Lohse who has dominated the whole game serves up a homer to a guy i’d never heard of!!! Just amazing. This season has been filled with more of those types of moments then i can ever remember. Situations that just shouldnt happen so often. Horribly timed goffer balls WITH 2 OUTS!. Terribly timed fielding errors WITH 2 OUTS!

Then we hit into double plays in the next 2 innings. Ludwicks was a sure hit up the middle when he hit it I thought. Pitcher was falling off the mound and it was hit behind him. How he stopped his momentum and reached back for it i couldnt believe. Just amazing.

Then watching Berkman hit back to back balls for homers (first was foul but plenty deep). Just amazing.

I was sure we were going to win. Lohse cruising with a 2-0 lead and bases empty with 7 outs to go. Then bobble and homer in a space of a minute. Just amazing…..how bad our timing on stuff like that has been.

Milt Thompson FTW!

That's why I was not down on Glaus......

I could tell it was going to be a “do or die” play meaning he had to try to barehand it. Pence runs verry well from the RHB box. That was just crappy timing as you pointed out.

Hmm

I’m not into the whole brevity thing, El Duderino.

Last night sucked and was yet another disheartening loss. But the season isn’t over. I mean, if we had won last night, we’d be 3.5 out instead of 4.5. It’s not like that one loss dropped us 4 games and now we’re suddenly 7.5 out. Who knows what could happen?

Let’s go get the next two, see if the Pirates can steal one from the Brewers and then we’re 3.5 out to start September.

optimism or fantasy

All I know is this team is stocked with young pitchers and outfield prospects it’s gonna really be hard to find spots for Ankiel and Schumacher going forward and justify paying them long term. They MUST keep Perez, Rasmus, and Wallace, outside of that they need to go out and make a deal for another bat and if they are lucky a bat that can play middle infield. I still think Denver offers us out best opportunity I’d like to get Holliday and Fuentes on this team and pick up a pitcher as well (Roy Halladay please God! yea right). Either way this franchise is shaping up nicely for the long term, we may be down now but this franchise won’t be down for long that’s for sure.

Wallace isn't a must keep

We have albert and he could make a very land us a very good rental depending on where we are next year.

I disagree

I see him being our starter at 3B for 2010 to 2013

i dont know why i typed albert

when I meant Glaus. Im not against having our 3rd bagger being Wallance in 2010. Just saying we shouldn’t shut the door on a trade possiablity next year.

by Evilfrog on Aug 30, 2008 3:28 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

trading wallace for a rental

is very irresponsible at the very least. He is one of the top 5 offensive prospects in the minors, I say with confindence. Trading those types of players for rentals is how good teams turn bad fast.

very very sorry :O

I agree on nixing the CC-type rental trade idea. The only way a trade should happen is if Wallace ends up only being able to play first base and Albert’s arm isn’t repaired. That trade should bring back a player with similar team control at a position that we need like middle infield.

Brandon Wood

I think he will be traded for sure in the off season. The Angels are currently looking for a backup SS on the waiver wire even though he is raking down in AAA. He is their Reyes.

The guy simply is mashing the shit out the ball to the tune of .296/.375/.595 with 31 HR’s in 395 AB’s. He K’s a lot though with 104k’s to 45BB’s. He has done well in the MLB so far though. Posting a weak line of .125/.150/.202 in 104 AB’s.

He won’t be cheap though. Angels are probably the best run organization in baseball and don’t have a lot of holes. Where we have depth in the OF they don’t have a need unless we want to take on Gary Matthews contract (which no one does).

Regardless are number one priority in the off season should to acquire a young MIFer through trade. The market is very weak in 09 and 10 when it comes to Free Agents in the MIF. So I think the Cardinals need to make a bold move regardless. Even it appears we are over paying for a prospect we need to take a chance.

by FlimtotheFlam on Aug 30, 2008 1:39 PM EDT   0 recs

I would listen to any offer outside of Rasmus,Wallace and DJ. Maybe Garcia too…Woody would be such an upgrade IMO. Without actually looking, I don’t think they have many OF prospects. Maybe a package of a couple OF prospects + a pitcher for Wood + low level prospect?

Staying and going

I would like to see a few adjustments. Like the 2000-2006 teams, a bit of a change is a good thing, don’t hold on to players just because they are our guys.
Staying
Pujols, Wainwright, Luddy, Glaus, Molina, Perez, McClellan, Carp, Wellemeyer (all no doubters);Garcia, Looper, Miles, LaRue, Franklin, Mather, Barton, Springer (if he doesn’t retire)

Going:
Lohse (I just don’t think he is going to be worth what he will be paid)
Lopez (doing great with us, but he has had only one above average offensive season in his career, I don’t look for him to revert back to that form long term. It comes down to him or Miles, I think Miles will be cheaper)
Izzy
Izturis ( I want them to find an offensive plus at SS)

Trade material:
Skip, Ankiel, Duncan (if he comes back healthy and productive in ST)Piniero, Thompson,Boggs, Ryan/Kennedy (if anyone would take him in a package).

Likely wouldn’t be able to trade all of those, but OF is a surplus. Trade from your strengths, no?

I had to miss someone.

Well, from 7 days ago...

the BP Postseason Odds Report had us an 18% chance of making the playoffs.

Now it’s a 6 percent chance.

Oh well. There’s always next year.

by craig3410 on Aug 30, 2008 4:20 PM EDT   0 recs

Besides, I think this is just karma.

If we win the WS going 83-79, then we can’t really complain about going 88-74 and missing. :)

by craig3410 on Aug 30, 2008 4:22 PM EDT   0 recs

On the current roster...

the only players I would keep would be Mang WW and Yadi…the rest I would at least listen to offers for. Carp Glaus Mcclellan Perez Ludwick Welley I would have to be blown away to trade as they are all valuable and most of them very cheap. The rest can come or go. We could find a replacement for any of the others from the farm or FA/trade.

On the farm you have to keep Rasmus Daryl Jones and Wallace(can’t be traded until June anyway). Garcia Todd Mort would be tough to part with but if I had to keep one it would be Garcia. Everyone else can be dealt but only for young talent that is pretty cheap we don’t need any Torii Hunters on our team.

Is it a double edged sword?

Is the reason the Cardinals can often time fend off losing season series because of all the platoons that exist on this team? But likewise, is it because of all the platoons on this team that they can’t ever mount a winning streak?

Having a platoon at:
LF
CF
SS
2B

or half of your everday positions, I would think, keeps a team from catching fire. Likewise, it keeps it from going into prolonged slumps. Maybe this is a win 7 out of 13 games team because they lack consistency at each position. Not consistency for the sake of consistency, but perhaps rather than carrying 5 OF’ers and 4 MIF’ers instead fin 3 starting OF’ers and 1 starting MIF’er and only use the 4th OF’er for their traditional purpose?

major DITTO

and though I know it is venom talking, I have to add that using four MI’s all year has bugged me to no end. When none of them, except for Miles (who himself is really only a AAAA replacement type player) hit for average or have a reasonably solid OBP. And when none of them have any pop, except maybe for Lopez, whose attitude, or maybe I should say ‘baseball intelligence,’ concerns me.
It all leads me to say what makes me feel ugly inside TO say, but I will not shed a tear if all six are gone next year: Kennedy, Miles, Izturis, Lopez, Ryan. The sixth one? TLR himself, who puts up with and abets this crap.

the one thing i cant get over from last night

is Tony letting fat elvis hit in the 9th. thats the one guy in their lineup you never want to face with the game on the line, and what does he do? he burned them big time. now i didn’t see Troy’s E live, but i saw the highlight. it wasn’t an easy play, but it definitely one he makes 8 times out of 10. the game definitely tuned on that play & newhan’s HR. but when Tony allowed Russ to pitch to fat elvis, the game was over. dont throw stats & numbers at me showing Russ had the upper hand. not in that band box joke of a park, not when Dave preaches throw fat elvis low & away where all he has to do is stick the bat out & the game would be over. which is exactly what he did. Tony should have thrown up 4 fingers & had Russ pitch to the next batter. there’s no doubt in my mind that was the right call. yet Tony blew it because he is so bull headed stubborn and almost always refuses to walk any batter intentionally because it “disrespects the game” or some other stupid excuse. well Tony, sometimes you gotta bite the bullet and walk a guy even if it goes against every fiber of your being. and last night was one of those nights.

what is so aggravating is the Cards were supposed to suck this year. and yet all things considered, they go out and have a pretty amazing season. they get our hopes up that they will make the playoffs, but when it comes time to put the pressure on, all their ugly faults come rushing to the surface, and they let us down. you really can’t fault them because we all know deep down, they are a deeply flawed team. but they are our team. and because of that, it’s just awfuly painful to watch this great season slowly slip away.

I'm going to go try to find a puppy and kick it. - Brad Thompson AND THAT'S A WINNER!

Anthony Reyes vs Seattle

7 innings, 7 hits, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 SO on 110 pitches.

Velocity on Fastball: 92-94 Early, 91-93 late.

Good to see the kid still pitching well with Cleveland. Glad we gave him up for a minor league reliever that will never make it to the big leagues.

He pitched to contact today. More flyballs and pop outs. That counts as contact everywhere but in St. Louis.

He is doing what Mr. Willis and Mr. Wedge ask of him. All comments I’ve seen are that they are quite pleased with his effort and his pitching and his results. All they wanted him for was to lose Paul Byrd’s salary. He’s pitched better than Byrd, so what the heck do they have to do but smile while they pocket the almost $2million dollars they aren’t paying Paul Byrd? They have to feel like they won the lottery. And they can have him next year for something not much more the ML minimum, or they can trade him. And now they don’t lose Perdomo to Rule 5. Because they weren’t keeping him anyway…..

She isn't crazy, she's just not impressed.

by jillsinmo on Aug 30, 2008 6:47 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

And it looks like he is going to lose this game..........

He has pitched very well for them. I told you all he looked like he was ready to break out. Looks like he’s ready to turn this career thing around and I’m happy to criticize the Cardinal organization on this one—they earned and deserve that criticism. They should have traded him to the Phillies-they DID offer more and I’m told they already have been in touch with the Indians. The offer is more than a minor league reliever too……..

She isn't crazy, she's just not impressed.
