Just to clarify for Joe Morgan
the balk was called because the pitcher stepped toward home plate.
In the world I see--you are stalking elk through the damp canyon forests around the ruins of Rockefeller Center. You'll wear leather clothes that will last you the rest of your life. You'll climb the wrist-thick kudzu vines that wrap the Sears Tower. And when you look down, you'll see tiny figures pounding corn, laying strips of venison on the empty carpool lane of some abandoned superhighway.
thanks
I’ve always loved that “quote”. Not sure exactly what the hell it means, but it’s creative as hell

Goodie...now we get to face Manny & the suddenly hot hitting Dodgers
this next week & a half is going to be our undoing I’m afraid.
I can't believe I'm saying this, but Luddy, you suck.
Ludwick, why are you such a free swinger? Why couldn’t you take the first pitch? I mean, the guy’s thrown 4 straight balls, and all you gotta do is take it for a ball, then he gets nervous and throws you a hanging, get-my-over curveball that you hit into Big Mac Land?? AAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!
think maybe he was trying to or even ordered to throw those 4 balls?

You’re bitching about a guy who has a double and a hr, and has been pounding the ball the entire past week?
Who cares if it was four straight balls, that was purposeful, it was to Albert Fucking Pujols. Like they are going to give him a stroke
The ball was down the pipe, if he didn’t swing then that’s when you bitch, not for that.

Yet another first pitch disaster
How many times have we seen that this year. We’ve had the patience to get a lot of walks early but when th game is on teh line late we’re first pitch hacking and invariably, first pitch “outing”. Madsen just throws 4 balls, granted it’s to APu. Ludwick was overeager. Maybe he felt that Madsen would try to hard to make a strike after the four balls. But so what, take a pitch, make him pitch to you….
TLR needs to institute a fine for this.
40th anniversary of Gibson's 1.12 ERA, Think he could pitch in the bullpen now?
Well, if you really think about it...
The last time Luddy swung at the first pitch, he hit one 410 feet. Since he’s just thrown four balls, that’s exactly why he’s swinging, because he knows that he’ll throw a get-me-over meatball at about 90 mph,so he can hammer it again. That’s acually a good decision.
whatever it is
i hope it keep working
nice inning Frank

luddy looked like he got too excited
a belt high fastball almost same location as the hr earlier. after simmering on it, you cannot fault him for that was a gift for a fan in the stands; he just got too excited and missed it. its a shame though that he made such poor contact and after that glaus hr it hurts more cause he couldn’t get a base hit or sac fly
I'm really surprised Lidge threw that right there

LaRussa runs the bench out early
two rookies in a row end the game. I don’t feel a lot of sympathy for TLR there.
I never feel sorry for LaRussa.
I was simply pointing out that Tony had already pushed all his buttons. As usual, he did it a little soon. He has really been overmanaging lately.
well, that was fun
two straight innings of only needing a FLY OUT, and we can’t do it. All we asked you guys to do was make an out that wasn’t swinging or in the infield—it wasn’t that much!
On with the (good) youth movement!

on the flip side - Hal could have told them just that about the sliders
and they were just overmatched. You dont see pitches like that in Memphis.

i agree that the approach looked bad
but, lets say he did ‘coach em up’. Mather is what you could call a free swinger – tongue in cheek. with his habits and the heat of the moment, its possible you could have replaced the Hardee’s sign with a neon – DONT SWING AT THE SLIDER – and he still might have poked at it.
what are you talking about?
were you in the dugout? In the pregame film session? Was he supposed to hit FOR them?
Drop the act. I don’t think you’re this dense. You’re obviously putting on an act and the act has worn thin and is extremely tiresome.
Good night. I’m outta here.

I appoligize for the dense comment
but I truly believe you are just mad and are looking for someone to blame. Who better than the hitting coach? Whatever.
And if it’s not an act, then I don’t know what to say. Was I ticked about the outcome? Yeah, but I think blaming the hitting coach for the performance of 2 rookie hitters is misguided. Maybe my comment was out of line, I don’t know. I apologize if I spoke out of line.
Sorry. I didn’t mean the dense comment as a shot. I think you are a thoughtful poster who has decided to blame the wrong person in an effort to find someone to blame. Hopefully it was done more out of confusion than spite. And I hope you can accept my apology.

i assume you are talking to me, if not, just ignore me
i accept our apology. and i take some blame in how you responded in the first place because i was not making my point clear. and i am sorry for that.
i’m not placing sole blame of this loss on Hal’s shoulders. far from it. i only fault him for what i rightly or wrongly, perceive at his inability to do his job & prepare hitters for their at bats. the Cards didn’t lose because of Hal. they lost because they allowed the Phillies to score more runs than they did. it was a team wide loss. heck both Lud & Albert failed to come through last night in big spots. they have much more experience than Stav Infection & Bombs. they must take some blame for that loss. old reliable Russ gave up the lead late in the game. he really must shoulder the load for the loss. we can question some of Tony’s moves as well. we can question Tadallions pitch selection. how dare he give up a solo home run! (that’s sarcasm folks)
so no, i’m not only blaming Hal. far from it. and as i said, if i learn he did in fact beat it into the kids heads to lay off the junk, i’ll eat whatever crow i have coming my way. this was such an important game, they all are. and for them to come so close to winning the game, and in the end lose it, i just have a hard time accepting it. that and the fact that they are flawed team, perhaps beyond repair, for this season at least.

You're one hell of a teacher.
You can impact a pupil in less than a week’s worth of time in order to cause him to forget his instincts and just do what you tell him, huh? Wow. They should pay you more.
Players have to execute. Mather was hosed when he fouled off the first pitch. The following two sliders were too close to let go, and too tough to hit. Stavinoha is not a ML hitter, yet. He has proven that since he’s been up, and he faced a guy that makes very, very, very good hitters look silly.
news flash, i'm not MO. i'm not taking any bullets for the team
i get you all are pissed, but don’t take your anger out on me. i made some damn valid points & if you dont agree with me fine, but dont jump down my throat.
rigosnell, you could very well be right. but we didn’t see that happen. i’m going on past experience here when it comes to my criticism of Hal. i haven’t seen him talk to a hitter before his at bat in a key situation in years. if ever some kids needed an extra reminder to not swing at the junk it was in that 9th inning. if it comes out that he did indeed talk to the two kids, i’ll gladly eat some crow.
I'm going to go try to find a puppy and kick it. - Brad Thompson AND THAT'S A WINNER!
Look, I'm not jumping down your throat, but ...
you can’t just blame coaching because two rookies with very long swings can’t hit one of the best sliders in baseball.
The best you are going to do with that last minute advice you are describing is to make the hitter tentative. The only chance either of them had was to let their instincts take over. Lidge throws damn hard, and neither of these kids have seen that level of pitcher enough to know, intuitively, what to do in those situations.
In addition, you can criticize McRae if you like; but LaRussa preaches an aggressive approach to those situations. Last night he was very clear that the Cards were too tentative. You think those two rookies didn’t hear that criticism? You think that those two rookies were going to stand by and watch strike three after last night?
you have to be aggressive, but you also have to be smart
Lidge leans on his slider in tight situations, and he throws it to inexperienced hitters almost exclusively when they face him the first few times. Hal should have told them that, they should have been ready for it.
i disagree that Hal reminding Stav Infection & Bombs to lay off the junk will do nothing but make them tentative. when one of your boss’s reminds you about an important aspect of your job, do you freeze up? for your sake i hope not.
they are both good hitters & they both can handle themselves. they have proven they have what it takes to hit big league pitchers, otherwise they wouldn’t be here. i highly doubt Hal giving them a reminder to lay off the junk would have freaked them out. had they seen a slider like Lidges before? i doubt it. but with all the video the Cards watch, i would hope they had seen it there & had been coached on what situations he throws it the most. i know watching it on video & actually standing in the box with the bases loaded, bottom 9, down by 1 run is a lot, i say A LOT different. but they still could have been & should have been better prepared.
and who’s job is it again to prepare young hitters? my point exactly.
I'm going to go try to find a puppy and kick it. - Brad Thompson AND THAT'S A WINNER!
whoa whoa whoa
Hal should have told them that, they should have been ready for it.
I don’t think I’m the first to ask, but how do you know what Hal tells them and what he doesn’t tell them? Seems like a silly argument to me.
perhaps my problem is i am expecting too much out of them
and Hal. as i said, i have no idea what Hal did or did not say to them. but to me, their at bats looked like those of kids who had no idea what was going on. who else do we point the finger at when this happens? i may be wrong, but i dont like how they looked. i think all hitters should walk up to the plate & have some idea of what to expect the pitcher will throw at them. young or old you have to be prepared. if not, you are doomed to fail.
I'm going to go try to find a puppy and kick it. - Brad Thompson AND THAT'S A WINNER!
I understand your points, but your expectations seem to be unrealistic.
As you stated, regardless of the advice, it is a much different thing to know that you should lay off a pitch and actually doing it.
Your analogy to my job is a pretty difficult one to make. Few of us that post here have jobs that are based so heavily on instinctive reaction versus cognitive decision. Few of us that post here have jobs that under such significant pressure on such an high profile stage. So, to try to compare my boss reminding me of an aspect of my job to being told to second guess my own pitch recognition just before going to bat in the bottom of the ninth in front of 40,000 fans is a drastic oversimplification, and I think you know it.
By your statements, no hitter should ever go through a protracted slump of any kind. After all, all he would need is for McRae to tell him to stop flying his front shoulder open. Or maybe to just watch the ball all the way into the mitt. There is no difference between that and telling a couple of rookies to not swing at a slider just before they go see it for the first time.
I really don’t see how you can make that claim.
This was pretty much a team effort, here.
The only one that can’t really take any blame is Wellemeyer. He left with a lead. Everybody else pretty much made some kind of serious failure or mistake.
hahaha
in all fairness, you’re talking about two guys with barely a month’s experience trying to hit arguably one of the best sliders in the game…tough break tonight
no kidding
apparently no one bothered to tell them he throws nasty sliders. Just think if they knew that kind of information.

Rico would have put the ball in play.....
There is something to be said about having a more veteran (even if that doesn’t translate to experience) bat on your bench. You can’t keep calling on kids, kids that are all or nothing type hitters, to come through in pinch hitting situations. There is NO excuse for taking some of the cuts they took. We needed a sac fly, a base hit, anything, and they are trying to hit the ball 500 feet.
RIDICULOUS!!!!!
No way
Rico is possibly the worst player we’ve had this year. If you really would have rather had Rico batting than Joe Mather or Nick Stavinoha then I kindly disagree with you. I’ll take Mather or Stav every time.

In that situation.....
I take him every time over Stav, and might take him over Mather. Mather hasn’t figured out that you don’t have to hit a HR every AB. Sorry, but this is one of my biggest pet peeves. Mather knows he has a long swing, knows Lidge has a good fastball and a good, hard slider, and he is still swinging for the fence 3 times.
No excuse for that, other than bad baseball.
Rico couldn't put a fastball in play all season
I doubt very much he’d be any better vs Lidge’s slider.
by Hardcore Legend on Aug 4, 2008 12:06 AM EDT up reply actions
Stavinoha didn't swing for the fences
he tried to hit the first pitch fastball strike that he got and it was still unhittable under his hands.
After that, the slider had him beat.

Lidge can't throw strikes
He let’s batters get themselves out by swinging at the slider. If you just lay the bat on your shoulder until he has to throw you a fastball, he’s eminently hittable.
Is very bad to steal A-Pu's rum...is very bad.
Actually, Lidge has been throwing strikes this year
which is why he has been vastly improved this year. When he can locate his slider for strikes, he’s down right filthy. That being said , we had him on the ropes tonight and let him go.
boo cubs, hooray beer
Good point but
it is hard to lay off that slider when it looks like it is right down the middle before dropping off the table. Truly nasty pitch. You would have to have a lot of experience to recognize it and not take a cut.
The time has come for someone to put his foot down and that foot is me
You just have to trust your scouting report
Anyone who watches him pitch knows he throws nothing but the slider when he’s in trouble, and he doesn’t locate it all that well. Just trust the book and you can get yourself in an advantageous position.

We play 10 straight games
vs LAD, CHC and FLA, in Chicago and Florida for those games.
Giving away games vs the Brewers, Braves and now Philadelphia adds up. We will be very lucky to not be 10 games out of the division and 5 back in the WC by the time we head to Cincy.
The Brewers on the other hand play Cincy, San Diego and Washington.
This was to be expected. I hope guys like Looper, Lohse, etc can pass through waivers for some deadline deals.

But, continue your tantrum. 500 feet!!!!

take a look at our schedule
it’s not going to be easy pickings for us anytime soon. You just can’t lose a series like this at home and expect that we are going to be serious contenders. If we could hit Cubs pitching I might be more hopeful. Yeah we can beat the weak teams like the Braves but we just can’t seem to win a series against any of the contenders since July.
Since that Mets series at the beginning of July
(a month now) we have been playing like a 3rd or 4th place team. We can beat the weak teams like the Padres and Braves but we end up going 1-2 against contending teams (Mets/Phils/Cubs) or even getting swept by the Brewers. Since early July we are not playing like a play-off contender. And this comes at the worst time becasue we are on a strech here where we are playing the best teams in the NL. Unless we find some kind of spark and our offense gets on a roll and we can win 7-8 games in a row…it’s going to be real tough for us.
I WOULD like to thank Todd Wellemeyer
for a masterful performance tonight, same with Looper last night.

If we want to have meaningful games in September
here is the way we will have to play for the rest of this month to have a chance of still being contenders the final month of the season.
Dodgers at home Take 2-3
Cubs at Wrigley Take 2-3 (A MUST)
Marlins at Miami Take 2-4 (A MUST)
Reds at Cincy take 2-3
Pirates at home sweep those 2
Atlanta at home take 2-3
Brewers at home sweep the 2 game series (A MUST)
Astros at Houston take 2-3
Basically we are going to have to win the rest of each series this month and can’t do any worse than going 16-7 or 15-8. If we can do this we will be in good shape going into the final month of the season with a good shot at the wild card. It’s going to be a big task for this team and they will have to play like they did the first 2 1/2 months of this season to do it. It’s not impossible but it will be real tough.
We have 5 days off this month so that will be a big help
but these next 10 games will make or break us I have a feeling. If we get swept by the Cubs for example it will make it where we pretty much have to sweep out at home with the Pirates/Braves/Brewers series…especially the 2 game Brewers set. Loosing this series to the Phillies was really tough and it basically makes it now where we can’t afford to get swept or lose more than 1 series the rest of this month to really have a shot in my opinion.
