Then a hit brings in the winnign run. Otherwise you likely need 2 2 out events to get in.

the probabilitys of scoring

a run from second are much higher then scoring from first with 2 outs. .. obviously, and I think its a better play in a tie game then in lets say a game your losing. Though, I’m a fan of making the other team make a play versus station to station baseball

For a time

we couldn’t pass the eleven games over bench mark. We did eventually. I think we’ll pass the 15 games over barrier too. But will it mean anything?

by cardsgirl95 on Aug 29, 2008 10:33 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Probably not.

But what the Brewers and Pirates do this weekend won’t affect whether or not we reach 15 games over for the first time this season. We control that part of our own destiny. If we follow our pattern with the Astros for this year and take the next two to win the series, we will reach the fifteen games over threshold. And we won’t lose any more ground to the Brewers, even if they sweep the Bucs.

...

The Cards simply cannot lose games like that. Milwaukee already won, we’re heading into September, we’re clinging for our lives, and we respond by going dormant against Randy (5.29 ERA) Wolf, giving up a huge home run to David (1 HR/66 PA) Newhan, playing lousy defense (that Glaus play was a killer), and once again watching our bulllpen give up a walk-off homer (granted it was to the great Berkman, but Jesus, that ball would be a pop-out at Busch… although someone earlier in the thread hilariously suggested that it wasn’t a Crawford Box homer). Like you, Paulspike, I’m afraid that might close the books on our hopes this year. Damn…

Regardless of the game tonight

Lohse was a bad ass. He pitched a really good game. That HR wasn’t even on a bad pitch.

i thought it was a bad pitch

but otherwise i agree with you — he did not deserve this kinda of game. after the first couple innings (when he struggled a bit with his command) he poured it on. even the hits he gave up were cheapies (except Newhan’s, of course)

+1

6:1 K/BB isn’t shabby.

He was good, but he got himself in trouble by getting behind a mediocre hitter & then had to throw

a strike, which wasnt helped by Santas boot. I know Ive ran this in the ground, but the bottom of the lineups kill this staff, Dunc obviously has a different approach than other teams or Im so used to the bottom of the Cards lineup being such a black hole.

And its hindsight, but I really dont think Berkman should have gotten anything close to hit since they held him in check prior to that, the Cardinal Killingness was bound to rear its head

Stupid road games

Even after bad Friday night home losses, there is Live at Shannons to look forward to.

Just get it over with

As much as I love the Cardinals, I’m sick of the letdowns.

Just lose 5 or 6 in a row and call it quits.

Play the young kids.

Remove the illusion that the postseason is possible.

Break my heart now and get it over with instead of dragging me along.

Even if we got to the post season, do we really think we’d have a chance.

Wait a minute…2006, 2006, 2006, 2006, 2006.

Why does that number keep coming back into my head?

My first memory of Cardinals baseball is seeing Darrell Porter jump into Bruce Sutter's arms on October 20, 1982!

Don't want to say we are out of it BUT

it is starting to look like I will be actually rooting for an American League team this year in the playoffs & WS which is SUPER RARE for me. The last time I can remember rooting for an AL team in the WS was the Angels in 02.

There is really nothing I like about the Mets or the Phillies. I can’t stand the Cubs…no need to go further and the Brewers (who were going to be the team I rooted for if we fell out of the race have shown their ass enough for me to turn me against them.) I guess the Diamondbacks are a team I can root for at least against the Cubs and maybe if they make the WS but I have a feeling I am going to be an Angles or Rays fan come October. This is coming from a hardcore NL fan too.

Is it just mental block or random chance?

I was following on my phone around the 5th inning and saw the lead was 2-0. Then I started auto-updating it when we got into the 7th. I didn’t really pay attention to the pitch count but I was like ‘da f%ck is Lohse still doing in this game?’. Then he promply gives up a homerun to a baseball player I’ve never heard of (which is impressive since I spend 72.5% of my day following baseball.

I’m like ‘why the hell was he still in the baseball game? Everyone knows Lohse can’t pitch more than 4 innings!’. Then I checked his pitch count, only 92.

So, it as defensible to leave him in there. It’s just sad that apparently standing up and sitting down 13 times is what tires Kyle Lohse out. Not the total number of pitches. It’s just that #7 on the scoreboard that sends him into a cold sweat.

I was the champion of ‘TRADE KYLE LOHSE AT THE DEADLINE’ Club, LLC. and apparently, he was disappointed he wasn’t traded at the deadline either. Leading up to the deadline, he had 3 loses on the season, post deadline, he has the same number (not counting tonight’s no-decision). He’s got a nice ERA hovering around 5.00 in those 6 starts as well.

Shoulda sold high. That isn’t blaming him for tonight’s loss in the least. It wasn’t his fault. He didn’t even pitch bad. He pitched pretty darn good. But does it really matter how well Kyle Lohse pitches these last 2 months in the grand scheme of things? His sucktitude in Cincinnati and Philadelphia last year will damage his chance at being a Type A free agent.

Truth is, the most likely reason he wasn’t traded was because we’d have had to pay him $500k for the right to trade him.

Wonder if he’ll clear waivers?

I'll bet you remember David Newhan

He was the guy who hit the inside-the-park “homer” at Fenway about four years ago made possible by Manny Ramirez making a diving interception of Damon’s throw (such as it was) in from the center field wall.

I saw Newhan play in AAA in June when he hit a triple off Parisi which was the only hard hit off him in 7 innings.

I asked why Lohse was still in, too.

We’ve only had 4 off days in two weeks and our relievers could probably use some work to stay sharp…of course, the one inning of relief that we get…a walk-off Ding Dong.

Just got back from tonight's game.

In case any fellow VEBers were wondering if it was as bad as it looked on TV. No. It was worse. Complete control of a game and it just slips away. Maybe I’m bad luck – I was at this year’s Cards-Stros opener when Tejada went walk off too. Hopefully they can continue the string of losing the opener and winning the next two against the stros and I’ll get to see them actually win a couple of games live this year.

Sadly

This is CLEARLY not a playoff caliber team.

There are 10 types of people in the world. Those who understand binary, and those who don't.

Bad game

How can a game that ends 3-2 with a walk off homerun be a bad game?

When the middle of your lineup goes 1-9 do you expect to win. Once again a big game and the middle of the lineup does not produce.
