If you could make your own coaching staff...
The other day my brother asked me if I could take all former cardinal players to make a coaching staff, who would I take. It made me wonder if anyone else had thought about it so I decided I would post it on here. Here would be my picks.
Manager- Jose Oquendo, I think he should get the job after Tony.
Bench Coach- Larry Walker- was a very smart player and I believe he could possibly become a good manager at some point.
Pitching Coach- Mike Matheny, learned from Dunc, handled the pitching staff extremely well.
Bullpen Coach- Alan or Andy Benes, couldnt decide but I think either of these guys would be goo with assisting Matheny in helping the pitchers. I tend to think Alan may have a future with the club as a pitching coach once Dunc is gone.
Hitting Coach- Big Mac, his knowledge of hitting is astounding and he can teach hitters how to prepare for a game by using examples of how he wa able to prepare for each game and show them the techniques that made him one of the game's most feared hitters. Even if you say steroids were the reason, you still gotta be able to hit a pitch.
1st Base Coach- Willie McGee, ran bases well and fan favorite
3rd Base Coach- None other than the Wizard, Ozzie Smith, this town needs him involved with St. Louis baseball again.
I thought this may be an interesting topic to see who people would choose, if not, then oh well.

pitching coach?
gibby. i wonder if he’s a pitch-to-contact guy?
"so if you can’t understand what someone else is saying why don’t you just shut up about it instead of being a jerk-off?"
"i’d challenge you to offer me alternatives which would convey the same level of meaning without being even more wordy and verbose."

Another pitching coach idea
Cal Eldred. Hasn’t he been asked to help out in the past?

Pitch to contact...
with the face.
Space.
It's a problem we face.
So we never go anywhere.
We just stay in one place.

Here's my take
Manager: The Secret Weapon
Pitching Coach – Greg Maddux, as soon as he retires. Gibby would be great too – no one has any balls to go inside anymore.
Hitting Coach – Tony Gywnn. Big Mac – no.
1B: Me
3B: You
Bench Coach: Don Zimmer.

I only said
Zimmer because he was a funny little elf. Who got his but kicked by Pedro…

Good...except
the whole “former Cardinals” label that was put onto this…

I need to
work on my contextual clues.
But isn’t this “baseball heaven”, and by that logic, then everyone who goes to baseball heaven will be a Cardinal eventually?

Ex-Cardinal staff:
Manager: Oquendo (I think he’s ready)
Pitching coach: Mike Matheny (I doubt Mr. Gibson would be willing to put up with the travel!)
Bullpen coach: Izzy — he’s seen the highs and the lows, and knows how to treat those two impostors the same. You also need a “mechanics” guy in one of these slots… I think Matheny fits that role.
Hitting coach: If you can’t steal Terry Pendleton back from the Braves, how ’bout Jack Clark?
Bench Coach: Tom Herr
I don’t think Willie or The Wizard really want to coach/travel, etc. So…
1B coach: Ken Reitz (just for the heckuvit!)
3B coach: Tom Lawless

agree with most up above, but would love to see Morris part of the equation.

staff
Manager – Oquendo
Pitching – Matheney
Bench – Tony Pena
Hitting – Larry Walker
1B – Willie McGee
3B – Ozzie or Lankford
Baserunning Instructor – Vince Coleman (didn’t he hold a position like this with the cubs?)
Bullpen – I would say Izzy, but I don’t know if I want him passing on the philosphy of it being okay to load the bases to get to the guy you want to pitch to. How about Danny Schaeffer or Todd Worrell or Lee Smith instead?

oh boy
You have some good name there, but I would like to work Terry Pendleton and Ted Simmons in there some how. There could be a case made for Ken Oberkfell as well.

I would take from among Ted Simmons or Keith Hernandez for my manager.
Ted Simmons is a smart guy; Keith Hernandez is too and they understand the game in a way that most players don’t. Either one of them would be great, and Ted especially, because he’s worked in the GM job, scouting , on the bench, and he’s just a guy who thinks things through-ahead of time. Bring back Ozzie to coach somewhere. Jason Isringhausen would make a pretty good pitching coach in my opinion, or go outside of the organization and steal whoever oversees Oakland’s pitching. They regularly bring forth great, good, and useful pitchers, and literally know how to steal useful, great, and good pitching from other teams for virtually nothing. Hire away Oakland’s ML coach, their AAA coach and their scouting director in charge of pitching.
If we’re getting new management, I want Kenny Williams for GM. I think the team he’s put together, considering what he had to work with financially and prospect wise is really remarkable-and then he even adds Ken Griffey, Jr. What? I’m sure the reason will be clear before the season is out. That team is really built for that park-I don’t think enough GM’s pay attention to that anymore.
She isn't crazy, she's just not impressed.
