Oh no it’s Wainwright. Man I bet we’re NEVER gonna recover from that J.D. Drew trade

I turn on the game and see the pitcher batting in the 2nd with one on and nobody out, yet the score is 0-0. It took me a little while to figure out how that could happen. Then I remembered LaRussa was managing.

thinking of the outrage we would have experienced if six hours ago we would have been told there was a lineup of:

Skip CF
Miles 2B
Mather RF
La Rue C
Barton LF
Lopez 3B
Molina 1B
Pinerio P
Izturis SS

In play for tonight

I have heard a lot of criticism of that statue by out of towners

the most common thing cited is the fact that the torso is way out of proportion with the rest of the statue.

About the Mike Shannon - drinking question

This came up a couple years ago and I believe that someone said Mike stopped drinking 4 or 5 years ago (at least) per doctor’s orders. He’s just a silly old man, that’s probably why he sounds half in the bag.

Hell, Dean Martin rarely drank on stage. It was all an act but people still to this day believe he did his shows drunk.

HL Mencken

by akaitori on Aug 23, 2008 2:44 AM EDT reply actions

Since we're talking about Shannon

I for one will be in mourning the day he quits broadcasting Cards games. Yeah Mike can get a little silly…ok a lot silly…but the man is still a treasure for me to listen to every night.
It took me awhile to warm up to John Rooney…but he is becomming much more listenable now that I am used to his calls. I shudder to think who would take over for Shannon when he retires. I pray to God it’s not Mike Claibourne or Ricky Horton. Those two can get really hard to listen to especially Claibourne who is just flat out horrible and extremely boring.

I assume John Rooney will become the main #1 announcer when Shannon retires…but I hope they can pair him up with somebody that has some charisma and can call a game. I wonder if they can get Keith Hernandez to come back for this role?? Hmmm.

by KYCards on Aug 23, 2008 2:53 AM EDT reply actions

Spot on about Shannon. I am old enough to remember him for his CBC and Mizzou days. He brings

this history – wanted or otherwise to the games. He will be (sorely) missed. Also spot on about Claibourne. Mercifully, I don’t hear him very often, but when I do I usually mute the broadcast. My guess is that with this being such a competitive and sought after position, the team would look for an external fill.

Have not heard Hernandez – is he good? Other articulate voices of the past?

by akaitori on Aug 23, 2008 3:26 AM EDT up reply actions

I think Hernandez is pretty good as a color guy for the Mets

But I doubt he will want to leave NY…but he did get into a “verbal fight” with a few Mets on a plane ride a few months ago…so maybe he might be looking to leave at some point? I figured he could be an option with his Cardinal past.

Ricky Horton is getting better…and he is actually OK working with Rooney…so he might be an option but I kind of hope not. He is still really bland and a little goofy at times. But if it was between him or Claibourne…it’s no contest..Ricky should get the job.

I’m not sure who else might be out there with a Cardinal background…of course there’s Joe Buck but he’s Mr. Fox now and I seriously doubt he will take a HUGE pay cut to do 162 Cardinal games…maybe later on down the road but not anytime soon. Former Cards pitcher Joe Magrane does TV for the Angles I guess he could be a option. Rex Hudler does TV I think too. Am I missing someone?

by KYCards on Aug 23, 2008 3:37 AM EDT up reply actions

I thought Magrane was with Tampa Bay?

I’m pretty sure he was, but I know these guys move around a little.

Well, Bob Carpenter does Nationals games, but he’s more of a play-by-play guy, and it looks like you’re looking for analysts (when did we stop calling them color guys?).

In the world I see--you are stalking elk through the damp canyon forests around the ruins of Rockefeller Center. You'll wear leather clothes that will last you the rest of your life. You'll climb the wrist-thick kudzu vines that wrap the Sears Tower. And when you look down, you'll see tiny figures pounding corn, laying strips of venison on the empty carpool lane of some abandoned superhighway.

by Tackle Box on Aug 23, 2008 1:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Hernandez is too big for radio

he also isn’t a big fan of St. Louis (still some ill will about the way things ended). I mean, the guy wore Mets colors to the 2006 ceremony.

That said, if they ever finally realized they should fire Al, they could do worse than Hernandez.

It’ll be interesting to see where St. Louis looks to go with their FSN and KTRS broadcasts over the next 10 years. Dan is an FSN company man, used to do broadcasts on FX back in the 90s. I think the corporate guys have a say in him keeping his job.

Ozzie did commentary a little bit after he retired...

As I recall, it wasn’t great…except that time Willie Mcgee hit a home run

I think Ozzie had his "audition" several years ago

and didn’t do real great. I don’t think he has done any broadcasting since and I doubt he ever will. He can probably make more money doing appearances for the Cards and at other MLB functions anyways. Plus there’s the whole feud with LaRussa I’m sure that doesn’t help either.

It was worse than "wan't great"

he’s awful. Same reason Stan “The Man” never got behind the mike. Just because you know a ton about baseball and love the team, doesn’t make you a broadcaster (yeah, there’s a little jab in there for a certain little someone……)

Lately Keith has had some good things to say about the Cards

maybe he is looking for an alternative (In case) he were to leave the Mets. I kind of wonder if that skirmish on that plane ride might not affect his future with them…..I doubt it but you never know.

Plus this is a whole different Cards ownership and all the ill feelings between Keith and the Cards should have gone away with time….at least one would think but who knows. The only guys who are still here when he was a Cardinal is Red and Shannon. Although Whitey pops in quite a bit and is still a visible part of the origanization.

Something tells me though if Keith were on the “outs” with the Mets sometime in the future…I bet he would give St. Louis a call or vice versa. Of course he wouldn’t get as many commerical gigs being in the Midwest as he does in the Big Apple.

I actually look for Dan to try and follow his hero Joe Buck's footsteps

here soon. I think in the next couple of years he is going to go more “National” and maybe only be part time with the Cards similar to what Joe was doing. Sadly I think Al has the Cards TV gig for as long as he wants it. I think he will be around at least another 5-10 years. Who knows maybe he will decide to go radio and be Rooney’s sidekick when Shannon retires….YIKES!!

I'm also a big fan of Shannon...

I think he’s hilarious whether he’s trying to be or not. He also has the old school approach to describing what’s going on (when he is describing the game) as opposed to just stating the events of what is happening. Jack Buck was great at describing the game. You could close your eyes and picture everything that was going on. I don’t really get that from Rooney, but I do Shannon to an extent

Looks like I'll get to hear him today.

One of the very few days where the Fox blackout affects me (but I’m not complaining).

As for Rooney, I’ve always liked him. I live in Chicago and would listen to him do the Sox games from time to time with Ed Farmer (who is about the crabbiest and crotchety-est man who ever walked the planet) and always felt like he was a great broadcaster. Just brings such a professional ability to the booth.

Ok let's see how we're doing

Earlier this month I posted what I think what the Cards should do this month to still be in the hunt for the final month of the season and to have a great shot of getting the Wild Card. Checking in on how we have done….Well so far so good. The Pirates loss hurts but if we can get a sweep this weekend that will make up for it. And yes the 2 game sweep of the Brewers is still a MUST!!

Dodgers at home Take 2-3 (DID THAT)
Cubs at Wrigley Take 2-3 (A MUST) (TOOK 1-2)
Marlins at Miami Take 2-4 (A MUST) (TOOK 3-4)
Reds at Cincy take 2-3 (DID THAT)
Pirates at home sweep those 2 (SPLIT 1-1)
Atlanta at home take 2-3 (NOW WE NEED A SWEEP IF POSSIBLE)
Brewers at home sweep the 2 game series (A MUST)
Astros at Houston take 2-3
