Brett Wallace on the Move
Brett Wallace is now a member of the Springfield Cardinals, and more importantly, is still at 3B while rising through the system. Even with his massive legs, Wallace has shown the ability to field the hot corner so far while proving that he is a polished player who can contribute in the very near future.
Is it safe to say that the Cardinals are expecting Wallace to take over 3B in 2010 in case Glaus is not resigned? Maybe have a new leftside of the infield with Wallace and Kozma by 2010? Only time will tell, but it sure is exciting to have all of this talent in the minors just waiting to burst into the majors. Just think, in the next few years we get to see what Wallace, Kozma, Rasmus, and others can do...

Ummm... NOT a press release.
The stories that we have on the site with bylines are NOT press releases. They’re written by reporters, just the way they are anywhere else. I don’t know why you called it an “official press release,” but that’s simply not what it is — any more than anything I write for the site is an “official press release.”
Thanks.

(also, FWIW, my read on it is that it may be very temporary, related to Allen Craig being hurt and Springfield having a very big series against NW Arkansas this week. I don’t know that for sure, but that’s how I’m reading it. This insight from me is also not a press release.)
Any comments, opinions, or observations I post here are mine and mine alone. They should not be taken as any sort of statement on behalf of my employer.

If I was too snappy, I apologize. But surely it’s clear why the difference is significant, right? I’m not a team employee. Neither is Robert Falkoff, who wrote the story. Calling it a “press release” suggests that it’s simply a statement from the team, rather than a story written by someone.
I mean, in the case of four paragraphs on Brett Wallace being promoted, the difference is not that great. But the principle is pretty significant. When I write, I write my own assessments, based on my own reporting. It doesn’t come from the team. It comes from me. And the same applies when it’s Falkoff, or Nate Latsch, or one of the other reporters covering one of the other teams anywhere on MLB.com.
Again, if the tone of my reply was too combative or nasty or anything, I do apologize. But in my eyes it’s a really important distinction.
Thanks.

Oh, I totally understand the difference…and I realized it right after I posted it, but sadly I don’t know how to edit a reply. All I was trying to say in that one sentence was “here is a link to the story from the official Cardinals web site to add another credible source to my original statement.” It just came out in a different way. So yes, I agree 100% with your reasoning.
Ok, as a college student, I have had more than my fair share of blog reading for the night. Goodnight everyone.
boys, the journalism crunch is tightening everyone's sphincter these days

Can you run this past us one more time?
sorry, this is just really gnawing at me.
this is baseball, not the iran-contra affair. are you working on some investigative piece exposing collusion? maybe a groundbreaking article on gays in baseball? robert falkoff’s “story”, if not a press release, was little more than a rewritten press release. sorry to put a dent in your ego, but the difference is not as “significant” as you seem to believe. i am not trying to devalue his work or yours, but let’s call it what it is.
i speak as one who has seen plenty of press releases rewritten. i’ve just never seen such indignation about it.
mtzxc, you are a much nicer person than i.

Yeah, I think it'd even be a reach
(although not completely out of the question) for him to be a September call-up next year.
In the world I see--you are stalking elk through the damp canyon forests around the ruins of Rockefeller Center. You'll wear leather clothes that will last you the rest of your life. You'll climb the wrist-thick kudzu vines that wrap the Sears Tower. And when you look down, you'll see tiny figures pounding corn, laying strips of venison on the empty carpool lane of some abandoned superhighway.
I could see the Sept. callup.....
if he’s ready, but Glaus is under contract, and is still the better hitter at the beginning of next year, most likely. No reason to rush him THAT much.

for the record
mtzxc did say “after next season,” I would interpret that as 2010. As you said, that may be a little quick in and of itself, but I don’t think anyone said anything about next year.

Well, if he's a lock for St. Louis
I think it’s pretty reasonable for him to get a September call-up the year before. I don’t see why that’s so unreasonable?
And it has nothing to do with Wallace or 2010, but any player who is projected into a starting role the next year. It’s not like the minor league teams play regular season games in September, so why wouldn’t they call the player up to get a taste of the major leagues as opposed to waiting until April?

I wasn't attempting to comment on Sept call-ups at all
I was merely pointing out that the original post said Wallace may be our 3b “after next year” as opposed to “next year,” as it appeared that Soonerfan had read it.
Honestly, I think it’s a little early on Wallace to make any assessment of when he will be ready to play in St Louis. If he is ready for a call-up next September they should do it, but that is a long way off and he may be struggling with AA ball at that point.

Forgive me, my eyes are playing tricks on me
I thought your last comment was a reply to me.

Didn't know Matt Leach was a regular here
Don’t be a stranger, Matt. Okay? We can always use some inside scoop to go with our blinding insights and staggeringly well-supported analyses.
P.S. I think Matt meant to say he is not a flack for the St. Louis Cardinals. In case anyone missed that!
Defense
I think the consensus is that Wallace’s defense at 3B leaves a bit to be desired. From Kevin Goldstein at Baseball Prospectus:
Currently playing third base during his pro debut, multiple scouts have relayed below-average defensive scores for both Wallace’s range and arm, and this scout was no different. “The question really is where he’ll play.”

Let's hold on a minute
He hasn’t played above Low-A ball yet. Let’s see how he produces in his time at Springfield and then where he starts next year. With Craig and Freese 3B is certainly a great position for our organization.
