then it was another. then it was one game in may, and then another. Then it was a couple of “one games” in june, and a couple in july. We’ve already had at least “one game” pissed away in august, and this is “another”. We’re 2.5 games back of the wild card and the wild card leader lost with sheets pitching tonight- that’s “one game” we need to make up.

Every team is going to lose 60, every team is going to win 60. It’s what you do with the other 42 that counts. I prefer to think that tonight’s is one of those 60 loses anyway, and win tomorrow.

The point Im trying to make is yes, they should beat the Pirates & if they dont, they dont

but you have to admit that this team has given away alot more than 1 win this year, so as bad as this game is, there have been others that were VERY winnable…or practically won if it werent for some BP collapses. Given this Pirate team, the pitcher, their lineup, the Cards should win, but thats baseball.

On a side note, not a very good game plan coming into this game from the start against Snell, IMO

That was their downfall in this game, no one tried to even work the count throughout until Apu did

it in the bottom of he 8th. When they replayed all of Snell’s K’s, only 1 was close to being a strike on strike 3. there were alot of ABs that they got themselves in a hole. I watched every pitch of this game & Snell wasnt as great as the announcers are gonna say he was. The hitters did him alot of favors. Sometimes you have to work the count…I dont get it

Various things come to mind

1) With the knee and hip problems, it could have been caused by flawed mechanics
2) Could have had it all year, hid it to get to 300.
3) Cardinals have known about it all along but didn’t want to appear ‘weak’ in the pen so kept sending him out there.
4) Tony cut him so that he could put Adam Wainwright in the pen.

I wonder if Mo finally gave him his walking papers and they are just letting him go gracefully myself.

he didn’t look hurt on Saturday night…..seems a little weird.

I wonder who they will use to replace him

as if we didn’t already know.

He’s pitched well with it twice, according to the article, but I wonder if this goes back to his drastic change in results after getting the first out of an inning.

Either way, Izzy was a thrill ride that was great on his good days and Franklin-worthy on his bad. I’ll miss the good Izzy.

Agreed

Izzy has been my favorite Cardinal to hate since ’05 now. As a wise man once said “I hate you, Ron Burgandy. But god damn do I respect you.”

Re: a thin jab at Wainwright going to the bullpen: I’d like to think that Wainwright has the kind of sway that if he comes out and says he’s a starter and he wants to start, that Tony and Dave respect him enough to oblige him. It’s been stated pretty publicly that he, Carp, Albert, and Yadi are the leaders going into the 2010’s, so I expect them to keep him happy.

this sucks

looks like he’s been pitching hurt almost all year long. HL was right when he said he was pitching hurt because he’d lose MPH after only a few pitches.

thanks for the memories IZZY. it’s a damn shame you couldn’t go out on your own terms.

So, about the umpires killing the instant replay

or atleast delaying it, I have to say I agree with them. Having the video box not near/on the field is a huge mistake. If they can’t bring it down to field level, then they either need to a) hire someone to relay the correct call from MLB Offices in New York or b) scrap the idea.

How many lockers are in a major league locker room?

I was wondering this today. When teams expand to 40 players (or so) in September, do they have enough lockers?

by Hardcore Legend on Aug 19, 2008 11:40 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Getting Dunn was huge for the Snakes

They have been scoring alot more runs since he joined the team. This might be check-mate for the Dodgers getting Manny.

St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa, playing Grim Reaper Rabbit, looks down on a begging Paris Wages playing Arabesqua, while Elaine La Russa, playing Mother Ginger Rabbit, views her daughter Devon La Russa lying on stage and playing Formerly White Rabbit during a dress rehearsal of the dance "The MAD Hatter Performance and Tea Party" on Dec. 1, 2006, in San Francisco.

This is, coincidentally, the same night he began considering batting the pitcher eighth again.

What a crappy game.....

For a team in the playoff chase, that was a terrible performance. Ian. Frickin’. Snell. Please. Can’t blame coaching or roster makeup on this one. Poor hitting. Poor pitching (K-Mac). And poor defense. Yadi’s looked off for a week or two now.

Better get it together boys, or this season will be over.

Well

Kyle McClellan didn’t insert himself into the 9th inning for his second inning of work.

by Hardcore Legend on Aug 19, 2008 11:55 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

And you're right HL

It seems like Tony was trying to send a message to sombody by doing it. Not saying that was what he intended but from the outside looking in it sure seemed like it.

I guess I can understand using him again

since he had only thrown 8 pitches, but with the off-day Thursday, why not have him available for tomorrow’s game as well?

by Hardcore Legend on Aug 20, 2008 12:01 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Because it was a one run game.....

Still very winnable. And he’s been our best bullpen arm. Who would you have put out there? You would have sent Kyle back out there and you know it.

by SoonerfanTU on Aug 20, 2008 12:11 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i would've

gotta admit it.

Wish B-R had splits for relievers based on “in their first inning, second inning, 3rd inning, etc”.

by SleepyCA on Aug 20, 2008 12:16 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I just don't understand why he said 'you would have sent Kyle'

back out there and you know it, when I clearly said AT THE TIME for TLR to stop using relievers for 2 innings.

It’s like ‘You know you would have done it, even if you said at the time you wouldn’t. Current sight is 20-20!’

by Hardcore Legend on Aug 20, 2008 12:19 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

a lot of guys criticized it

i’m sure that’s what he is reacting to. You weren’t 20/20 hind-sighting but a lot of the folks probably were. Anyway he’s definitely wrong to be singling you out.

Ironically I thought TLR managed a pretty good game tonight; he just had some bad luck with one of his best defenders (yadi) not coming through.

"..and that, my liege, is how we know the Earth to be banana shaped." -Sir Belvedere

by SleepyCA on Aug 20, 2008 12:25 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I thought he did well

he was caught in a Catch-22 with the Mather/Ankiel situation.

Rick can’t hit after the 7th inning, so it was a good idea to pull him.
Rick hits LHP better than Mather, so it was a good idea to have him hit.
The LHP was coming out after that batter anyways, so it didn’t effect the Pujols at-bat…so changing hitters wouldn’t matter.

He was damned if he did, damned if he didn’t.

by Hardcore Legend on Aug 20, 2008 12:39 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't know where/when you said that.....

As I don’t follow you around like you think I do.

And since when can relievers not go more than one inning, especially when that one inning consisted of what, you said 8 pitches? That is just an excuse, his getting hit and control issue had nothing to do with it being his second inning. He’s went multiple innings all season for us, and when rested, has done well.

by SoonerfanTU on Aug 20, 2008 12:33 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Dude.....

I’m not getting into the personal stuff with you.

I read the posts, if I see one I don’t agree with, I’ll respond. Most of the time I don’t know “who” I’m responding to until after I post, I simply don’t care. Although, I can generally tell it’s one of your posts as soon as I read it. We disagree, on ALOT. I’m not going to just not respond to you at all…..if I have an opinion, I’ll give it.

Seems like you find something to criticize TLR for every single game. And it seems like you flip flop alot in doing so, though no, I can’t prove it by looking up posts from you all season.

by SoonerfanTU on Aug 20, 2008 12:47 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think we all criticize Tony at some point or another

that’s kind of the “fun” of being a die-hard fan. Being the “arm-chair manager”. I remember I did it A LOT with Whitey and Torre too. I really don’t care if fans criticize Tony..it’s part of being a fan. If I agreed with Tony all the time I would start to question where my head was at.

by KYCards on Aug 20, 2008 12:56 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

should add

i have springer warming up at the start of the inning, and with 2 on, no outs, he’s in there. KYcards is right about that.

K-Mac can't pitch two innings now?

On four days rest? Heck, coming into the game, he had only pitched 1.1 innings in the last 6 days. I think he was fine, just ineffective.

Who should have pitched the ninth? If Perez is the closer, not him. I’d rather have had K-Mac than Franklin. Villone? Garcia? Thompson? Who?

Just another lame shot at TLR. Had he pulled Kyle to start the ninth, you’d have griped about that.

by SoonerfanTU on Aug 20, 2008 12:10 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Probably the only other option.....

But no reason for it. And if Izzy really is out, you can’t go willy-nilly through your pen, especially if Wainright is the call-up, cause he’d probably be out tomorrow.

People have been begging Tony to leave K-mac in for multiple innings nearly every time he doesn’t. Now that he does, and K-mac doesn’t come through, it’s a coaching mistake? Nonsense.

The offense lost this game, plane and simple. Ian Snell should have gotten lit up. Instead, our lineup didn’t do squat.

by SoonerfanTU on Aug 20, 2008 12:37 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think we can all agree that this game sucked.

No need to fight over the nightmare of that inning. We’ll get them tomorrow. Plus the Brewers lost so we really didn’t loose any ground on the WC.

by KYCards on Aug 20, 2008 12:42 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Tony left K-Mac in there too long

but in the end much of that inning was on the failures by Yadier. It happens..we’ll win tomorrow.

by KYCards on Aug 20, 2008 12:16 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Actually I would have put Perez in the 9th to try to keep them at 1 run

It’s not unusual to have your closer to go out in the 9th of a tie game at home.

by KYCards on Aug 20, 2008 12:25 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

My bad. But I still think Perez should have pitched the 9th.

Anytime we have a reliever (no matter who) pitch more than one inning bad things seem to happen this season. 8 pitches or not it was a risky move to have K-Mac go back out there.

by KYCards on Aug 20, 2008 12:38 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I still say K-Mac should have been fine.....

I just looked it up:

The last 10 times K-Mac recorded more than 3 outs in a game, only once did he give up a run in the “2nd” inning he pitched. And if my research was correct, that one outing, he gave up 1 run, the other 9 outings, he wasn’t scored on at all.

Pretty impressive.

by SoonerfanTU on Aug 20, 2008 12:44 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree it was a nightmare of an inning all around

We’ll get them tomorrow. I bet our offense wakes up big time tomorrow.

Anybody get to see the Craig Biggio number retirement ceremony?

I thought it was really cool. Even though the Astros have been our main rival over the years, I have always been a fan of Biggio. He was pure class and he deserves this honor that the Astros gave him. You can tell Craig’s kids are sure proud of their daddy. It was also really classy for the late Ken Caminiti’s wife and three daughters to be there as well. If you haven’t seen it you can watch in in full on MLB.com.

Promised myself to stay away from tonight's game thread

but I think I’ve lost my mind……and it’s not due to the assortment of pics in the thread.

No, I’m watching the men’s beach volleyball match in the Olympics. It’s U.S. vs. Georgia (the country obviously). Anyway the U.S. team is listed as Dalhausser/Rogers and the Georgian team is listed as Geor/Gia. Ummmm. What? Geor/Gia? As in Geo-gia? Georgia? You’ve got to be f’n kidding right? So I did a little googling and here’s what I found.

http://www.reuters.com/article/sportsNews/idUSPEK25986220080820?feedType=RSS&feedName=sportsNews

Geor and Gia are actually two Brazilians named Jorge Terceiro and Renato Gomes who applied for dual citizenship to qualify for the Olympic games and decided to have fun and adopt the nicknames Geor and Gia (I think Jorge is "Geor").

Anyway, just had to share…..

In the world I see--you are stalking elk through the damp canyon forests around the ruins of Rockefeller Center. You'll wear leather clothes that will last you the rest of your life. You'll climb the wrist-thick kudzu vines that wrap the Sears Tower. And when you look down, you'll see tiny figures pounding corn, laying strips of venison on the empty carpool lane of some abandoned superhighway.
