well we could lose and still win the wild card
teams lose to the pirates all the time – it’s happened 56 times this year
by cardsfaninmass on Aug 19, 2008 10:52 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
And we've accounted for 7 of those 57 Pirate wins now
12% doesn’t seem like a lot, but I’d wager it’s the highest or close to the highest wins-against-one-team percentage the Pirates have.
I once shot a man just to see him die...then I got distracted and missed it.

youre right
its one game. Its also a game we should win. What, with the lineup Bay, Nady, and McClouth-less? Yeah, we should be winning this.
Oh, and not to mention the complete lapse of fundamentals this half inning.
at the end of the day, yeah, its one game.

it was one game in april
then it was another. then it was one game in may, and then another. Then it was a couple of “one games” in june, and a couple in july. We’ve already had at least “one game” pissed away in august, and this is “another”. We’re 2.5 games back of the wild card and the wild card leader lost with sheets pitching tonight- that’s “one game” we need to make up.

Thank you!
Someone with some rationale…its a long season, but EVERY game counts. How will everybody feel if we end up 1 game out on the last day. All of this ‘its only 1 game’ is BS
by buzzburton33 on Aug 19, 2008 10:56 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Then we don't make the playoffs
by one game. it happens.
Every team is going to lose 60, every team is going to win 60. It’s what you do with the other 42 that counts. I prefer to think that tonight’s is one of those 60 loses anyway, and win tomorrow.
(or come back tonight, since the games not over yet.)

The point Im trying to make is yes, they should beat the Pirates & if they dont, they dont
but you have to admit that this team has given away alot more than 1 win this year, so as bad as this game is, there have been others that were VERY winnable…or practically won if it werent for some BP collapses. Given this Pirate team, the pitcher, their lineup, the Cards should win, but thats baseball.
On a side note, not a very good game plan coming into this game from the start against Snell, IMO

That was their downfall in this game, no one tried to even work the count throughout until Apu did
it in the bottom of he 8th. When they replayed all of Snell’s K’s, only 1 was close to being a strike on strike 3. there were alot of ABs that they got themselves in a hole. I watched every pitch of this game & Snell wasnt as great as the announcers are gonna say he was. The hitters did him alot of favors. Sometimes you have to work the count…I dont get it

1) With the knee and hip problems, it could have been caused by flawed mechanics
2) Could have had it all year, hid it to get to 300.

Re: a thin jab at Wainwright going to the bullpen: I’d like to think that Wainwright has the kind of sway that if he comes out and says he’s a starter and he wants to start, that Tony and Dave respect him enough to oblige him. It’s been stated pretty publicly that he, Carp, Albert, and Yadi are the leaders going into the 2010’s, so I expect them to keep him happy.

or atleast delaying it, I have to say I agree with them. Having the video box not near/on the field is a huge mistake. If they can’t bring it down to field level, then they either need to a) hire someone to relay the correct call from MLB Offices in New York or b) scrap the idea.

I just don't understand why he said 'you would have sent Kyle'
back out there and you know it, when I clearly said AT THE TIME for TLR to stop using relievers for 2 innings.
It’s like ‘You know you would have done it, even if you said at the time you wouldn’t. Current sight is 20-20!’
by Hardcore Legend on Aug 20, 2008 12:19 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
a lot of guys criticized it
i’m sure that’s what he is reacting to. You weren’t 20/20 hind-sighting but a lot of the folks probably were. Anyway he’s definitely wrong to be singling you out.
Ironically I thought TLR managed a pretty good game tonight; he just had some bad luck with one of his best defenders (yadi) not coming through.

I thought he did well
he was caught in a Catch-22 with the Mather/Ankiel situation.
Rick can’t hit after the 7th inning, so it was a good idea to pull him.
Rick hits LHP better than Mather, so it was a good idea to have him hit.
The LHP was coming out after that batter anyways, so it didn’t effect the Pujols at-bat…so changing hitters wouldn’t matter.
He was damned if he did, damned if he didn’t.
by Hardcore Legend on Aug 20, 2008 12:39 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don't know where/when you said that.....
As I don’t follow you around like you think I do.
And since when can relievers not go more than one inning, especially when that one inning consisted of what, you said 8 pitches? That is just an excuse, his getting hit and control issue had nothing to do with it being his second inning. He’s went multiple innings all season for us, and when rested, has done well.

Seems like you find something to criticize TLR for every single game. And it seems like you flip flop alot in doing so, though no, I can’t prove it by looking up posts from you all season.

K-Mac can't pitch two innings now?
On four days rest? Heck, coming into the game, he had only pitched 1.1 innings in the last 6 days. I think he was fine, just ineffective.
Who should have pitched the ninth? If Perez is the closer, not him. I’d rather have had K-Mac than Franklin. Villone? Garcia? Thompson? Who?
Just another lame shot at TLR. Had he pulled Kyle to start the ninth, you’d have griped about that.
by SoonerfanTU on Aug 20, 2008 12:10 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Probably the only other option.....
But no reason for it. And if Izzy really is out, you can’t go willy-nilly through your pen, especially if Wainright is the call-up, cause he’d probably be out tomorrow.
People have been begging Tony to leave K-mac in for multiple innings nearly every time he doesn’t. Now that he does, and K-mac doesn’t come through, it’s a coaching mistake? Nonsense.
The offense lost this game, plane and simple. Ian Snell should have gotten lit up. Instead, our lineup didn’t do squat.

I think we can all agree that this game sucked.

Anytime we have a reliever (no matter who) pitch more than one inning bad things seem to happen this season. 8 pitches or not it was a risky move to have K-Mac go back out there.

I still say K-Mac should have been fine.....
I just looked it up:
The last 10 times K-Mac recorded more than 3 outs in a game, only once did he give up a run in the “2nd” inning he pitched. And if my research was correct, that one outing, he gave up 1 run, the other 9 outings, he wasn’t scored on at all.
Pretty impressive.

I agree it was a nightmare of an inning all around
We’ll get them tomorrow. I bet our offense wakes up big time tomorrow.

I guess it's a good thing we didn't trade some good prospects for George Sherrill
He went on the DL with a case of inflammation in his left shoulder.

Anybody get to see the Craig Biggio number retirement ceremony?
I thought it was really cool. Even though the Astros have been our main rival over the years, I have always been a fan of Biggio. He was pure class and he deserves this honor that the Astros gave him. You can tell Craig’s kids are sure proud of their daddy. It was also really classy for the late Ken Caminiti’s wife and three daughters to be there as well. If you haven’t seen it you can watch in in full on MLB.com.

Promised myself to stay away from tonight's game thread
but I think I’ve lost my mind……and it’s not due to the assortment of pics in the thread.
No, I’m watching the men’s beach volleyball match in the Olympics. It’s U.S. vs. Georgia (the country obviously). Anyway the U.S. team is listed as Dalhausser/Rogers and the Georgian team is listed as Geor/Gia. Ummmm. What? Geor/Gia? As in Geo-gia? Georgia? You’ve got to be f’n kidding right? So I did a little googling and here’s what I found.

Geor and Gia are actually two Brazilians named Jorge Terceiro and Renato Gomes who applied for dual citizenship to qualify for the Olympic games and decided to have fun and adopt the nicknames Geor and Gia (I think Jorge is "Geor").
Anyway, just had to share…..
In the world I see--you are stalking elk through the damp canyon forests around the ruins of Rockefeller Center. You'll wear leather clothes that will last you the rest of your life. You'll climb the wrist-thick kudzu vines that wrap the Sears Tower. And when you look down, you'll see tiny figures pounding corn, laying strips of venison on the empty carpool lane of some abandoned superhighway.
