strikeout or HR guy isn’t horrible to have up righ tnow

seemed pretty terrible to me
Swung at a lot of balls, or questionable pitches he’d never hit anyways.
yes
after the fact, it was a horrible at bat.
They say that it's never too late, but you don't get any younger...
7-10 times someone will swing at a bunch of balls when a pitcher is clearly wild?
I never predicted an out, I just predicted having a free swinger is not good right now.
but he could have just as easily came up and hit a home run
and someone like MIles would have had just as much of a chance of hitting into a dp
They say that it's never too late, but you don't get any younger...
I agree with TheBirds
Ankiel is almost always jumpy and undisciplined with a runner on third and fewer than two outs. In 23 plate appearances this year, he’s gotten the run home only a quarter of the time, and he’s struck out 11 times.
He refuses to call timeout
he refuses to step out of the box. He just stands there and twitches. It may be the same mental aspect that caused him to throw the ball into the owner’s box when he was a pitcher.
by Hardcore Legend on Aug 17, 2008 3:09 PM EDT up reply actions
funny
i was thinking the same thing today… i’ve always thought ankiel was immune to mental doubts in the batter’s box, only b/c it’s such a reactive discipline (as opposed to pitching, or when he has plenty of time to throw as a fielder, both of which seem to cause him problems). but perhaps there’s something about having that runner on third — essentially all you can do is fail — that gives him the yips.
then again, i just checked his ’07 stats with a runner on 3rd, less than two outs. he hit .727 with a 1.727 slugging percentage and only 1 strikeout in 16 plate appearances. wow…
boy
didn’t expect that to happen

I wouldn’t say that it’s detrimental to the team by those numbers, but clearly it’s a small sample size

Every time the Cards get to 14 over .500
run into a wall (or Volquez). I seriously think the time they get to 15 over is the time they go on a run. If that ever happens.
There's still a chance
5 games against the Pirates and braves could get us to 15 over.
mil, astros, houston, marlins, then cubs could get us back to 10 over though.

Well...after 2 weeks of not gaining any ground against the Cubs or Crew & finally
getting to 2 back in the WC, they have a performance like today against a horrible team that you should beat regardless of Volquez’ outing. But, hey, they won the series yesterday, so Tony’s happy. This is a part of the schedule that they HAVE to & should take advantage of & this Red’s lineup puts up @ least a 6 spot on em & its not over yet.
I guess a guy can only hope that the Crew loses later today & it will be a wash.

You know, there needs to be a statistical metric
that can quantify players with awful ‘looking’ swings. I mean, ones that look like they have no chance of ever touching the ball.
Example: Kennedy, Adam.
I’ll never understand how he even makes contact. His bat looks like it goes straight up in the air and the ball is coming in straight. So, the bat is literally in the plane of the ball at only 1 moment. It is rather quite amazing.
Is there a worse looking swing in baseball?
by Hardcore Legend on Aug 17, 2008 3:57 PM EDT reply actions
Well, since the bat has width, it's not really a plane
Same for the ball. It’s more like two rectangles that are at weird angles to each other. Your point is still pretty valid though.
Cardinal fan in the heart of Braves country
DFA Adam Kennedy and Randy Flores!
"Just because nobody understands you doesn't make you an artist."
I mean, most 'bad' hitters
atleast have their bat go through the strikezone towards the pitcher. This somewhat increases their chances of the bat contacting the ball at multiple points, even if it isn’t a direct hit.
Kennedy’s swing, however, looks like a toddler swinging a plastic bat. He hacks straight up at it. It makes it seem as if the only time it could actually hit the ball is the precise moment that the bat and the ball intersect at 1 random point over the plate.
There are weird stances, violent swings, pitchers who simply can’t hit. But I’ve never seen a hitter whose actual swing is so bizarre. Results dictate playing time, I guess, but I can’t understand how he made it to this level of professionals baseball with that swing. And I still can’t believe David Eckstein and Adam Kennedy’s agent talked Walt into signing this guy long term.
by Hardcore Legend on Aug 17, 2008 4:05 PM EDT up reply actions
Agreed
It looks like at least a 45 degree angle, and he doesn’t have enough strength/power for that swing to be effective. He has to hit it almost perfect to get any decent contact on it.

Well, collectively we sucked as a team all in all today.
Lohse was decent, but did have control issues and really ramped his pitch count. We had scoring chances a few innings and did nothing. Almost everyone was at fault today, from Pu to Iz. Garcia left a fastball right in Phillips wheelhouse, Franklin did his norm.
Would rather lose one like that then to lose one where we’re winning at the close of the 8th. Something we’ve done a lot.

I think there is a time and place for it.
Today in Cincy was they time and place. None of the Reds’ pitchers had good command.
I also think that some days if all you do is take you’ll get the starter out after the 6th but then you’ll have 0 runs.
also
when a guy has as good stuff as Volquez you have to make him throw pitches. Because he is the kind of guy that usually has 100 pitches by the 6th

As frustrating as today was
Pu for the career : 1.572 OPS with over .700 SLG. In 498 PA he’s walked 368
Ank for the career : 43 PA walked 29 times, over ..571 SLG with an OPS over 1.3
I don’t know if I would say tendencies. Ank for sure walks quite a bit, and when Pu swings, ball tends to go boom.

Did they really say that?
Why can’t we have our two best starters in the rotation at the same time?

listen everytime I call for the firing of TLR there is an outcry
and then more sound bites emerge.
Don’t give me the “This team wouldn’t be where it is without tlr junk”, this team has plenty of talent on the field.
Those wouldn't be the people
that never question anything LaRussa ever does, would they?
Don’t sweat them, it’s not worth it. You have your own opinion, they borrow theirs.

I like Dunc
but i’m ready for the Dunc and TLR era of Cardinals baseball to end.
boo cubs, hooray beer
Brewers have a real tough august schedule
When the time comes for me to not be bothered by losing that is when I know it is time to retire my fandom
I just dont get this team sometimes

I mean September

For the people who have been able to watch most games
Do you notice anything different that Lohse is doing that’s making him less effective than he was earler in the year? Granted, he did have a quality start today (by the very minimum), but he was upwards of 120 pitches in six innings. In his last five starts (coming into today) he’s put up a line of:
5 GS
1 W
3 L
29.2 IP
21 ER
36 H
5 BB
25 K
6 HR
6.37 ERA
.300/.325/.550/.875 against
His ERA+ has fallen to 108 (before today) so he’s barely an above league-average pitcher anymore. Hardly a top-of-the-rotation guy. The 1.52 BB/9, 10.92 H/9, and 7.58 K/9 tell me he’s not having major control issues. His WHIP over that time is 1.38, which is .10 higher than his season numbers so far, or in other words, an extra hit or walk per ten innings. The 6 HR in 5 starts is a bit unnerving. What is it that is making him not be the pitcher he was earlier this season?

lohse
simply ain’t THAT good. he’s not an un-hittable guy. doesn’t k enough people. he skated by the 1st half. there’s a reason he’s league-average.
He has not located his fastball in the last few starts
like the way he was earlier this year. Of course, not very many pitchers in the entire league can paint the black consistently like the way the he was, so it’s not too surprising he’s fallen back into reality.
Even with the rest belated, everything is antiquated
Are you writing from the heart?

Mother F-ing Ryan Braun - Dodgers blow 5-1 lead in the 9th
Wonder why Torre didn’t go to Broxton when it turned 5-3? Bastard brew crew DAMN!
Silver lining – Vin Scully listening into the 9th and, perhaps, beyond.
I could've hit that hanging curve out
at least the douche is out of the game for defensive purposes

As much as I dislike the Cubs...
I would rather see them get it done before Milwaukee. They are 100% classless…
Unforutunately, games like this....
…make Milwaukee appear (to themselves anyway) ‘destined’….

Should have won last night
had 2 chances to do it (9th and 10th) and couldn’t get a clean basehit.

your back!!!???
great news – welcome back HCL…
Unfortunately, I watched last night’s game too. That was def. a winnable game for LA

not to mention...
there were 2 outs and none on before milwaukee put together the go-ahead rally in the 10th…
The Brewer comeback was helped alot by the fact that the 1st Dodger pitcher got hosed on a
strikeout to Kendall in the 9th w/one out…he painted the outside corner & didnt get the call & Mr. “I look like Tom Hanks from his ‘Philadelphia’ role” dribbled one up the middle to start the rally, then a double error by Loney the 1st basemen didnt help either. The rookie homeplate ump was pretty bad throughout for both sides from what I saw.
It was, fortunately, ALMOST a total meltdown…lucky for the Dodgers, they were @ home.

makes one wonder
if we put izzy on waivers, would the dodgers pick him? chan ho, can’t believe he was pitching in that situation and i would think torre might want the veteran—certainly must pain him to watch chan ho not be mariano. the way izzy is going, i’m afraid 1) no one would sign and we get no picks or 2) he ends up not being even a B free agent and we get nothing even if he does sign. i wonder if they did put his name out there?
If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs, perhaps you haven't grasped the situation!
The Mets bullpen is awful
hopefully we could get them to try to revive Generation K.

mets are bad, true
but we are up against them for the wc much more so than LA. rather see him go west
