Game 127 Open Thread -- August 17, 2008

13-5, 3.92 |
14-5, 2.86 |
When last I did one of these, a Sunday night game thread, it became a prelude to an injury to Chris Carpenter and a Cubs' series win. Hopefully, we can at least keep our starting pitcher healthy tonight.
Volquez has to be the favorite for the Rookie of the Year. He's been positively outstanding this year -- Wayne Krivsky's last hurrah before being replaced by Walt. He's struck out 146 in 144.2 IP and, amazingly, has only given up 10 homers while pitching 12 times at Great America Ballpark.
He has struggled a bit of late, however, w/ a 5.33 ERA in his 27 innings since the All-Star break. It's a terribly small sample size but may be an indicator that he's starting to tire, that major league hitters are beginning to adjust to him, or both. He has tied his season-high in innings w/ the 144.2 he's thrown this year so the Reds are now entering uncharted waters. Hopefully, the Cards can take advantage.
Lohse, too, has struggled of late. He has a 5.65 ERA in the 36.2 innings he's thrown since the All-Star break and, for the season, has a 5.40 ERA in 11 road starts. The pens could see a lot of action today.
The Cards begin a big homestand following this game and have just 1 more road trip as long as the one they're finishing today. Overflow will go up around 1:45.

speaking of tiring
isn’t volquez on the small side, kind of like todd (<6’ and 180)?
If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs, perhaps you haven't grasped the situation!
Except he throws about 7 mph harder and has a devastating changeup...

doesn’t seem to be part of skippy’s approach to leading off

wow, only 8 pitches
We need to make Volquez work more than what he had to serve up in the first inning…
Skip
in August he’s swinging at 53.99% of the pitches he sees. The first 4 months of the season were all below 50% — mostly around 46 – 47%. It’s one reason he’s not the hitter he was at the beginning of the season.
You mean
middle part of the season. He was pretty rough the first month of the season.

I prayed they would trade him.
All signs pointed to an aberration not a trend.
But it didn’t happen.
Awful? Terrible?
Really? I don’t want him re-signed either but he’s hardly a terrible pitcher. (Where have I heard this before? Al?)

Who do you want to start in his spot?
If Carp and WW come back, are happy with Blooper, Pineiro and Welly as your other pitchers? Or do you want McClellan, Garcia or someone else to start?
this year or next?
This year, you might as well keep him out there. Next year, I’d take Garcia or any number of free agents

I’m not going to miss the Cincinnati Reds announcing crew.

I honestly can't see why Walt lets him overwork
those young pitchers. Mind botteling
* sarcasm might be involved in this comment
I am impressed with the Reds' young players.
Even though we have handled them pretty well this season and in this series, it really does seem like Walt has them finally pointed in the right direction. Dickerson looks like a good player. Bruce could be a decent slugger with some patience. They still have good power with Phillips and Encarnacion (although they are lazy). Votto seems like a solid player. They are still some pieces away. They need a catcher and a SS in terms of position players.
With the right manager this could be a good team next year and for several years following. Luckily, they don’t have the right manager. Dusty Baker is the exact WRONG type of manager for a group of young guys.
Lazy?
Phillips never looks lazy to me
why does lazy get thrown around so much?
* sarcasm might be involved in this comment
because it’s an ironic twist to “arm chair coaching”

Lazy in terms of not playing for the team.
He seems to be lazy in his commitment to the organization winning and not just simply winning with his own numbers. I also thinks he does not do the fundamentals that well and gets a little lazy in the field.
Maybe I am wrong, but that is what I have seen from Phillips the last couple years. Dusty is the kind of manager that will put up with that, and my point is that they need a manager that can get Phillips and Encarnacion playing for the team with these other young players. With the decent pitching they are developing and Walt putting a couple more pieces in place, this could be a contender.
Walt has done nearly nothing in assembling this team...

Dickerson and Bruce are regulars now that Griffey and Dunn are gone.
Seems like that is pretty important and Walt has clearly signaled the Reds are going to get rid of the excess. I am not trying to defend Walt, but this team is different this month than it was last month and I think Walt is responsible for that and I think it is the right direction for the Reds.

i think it was more of the fact that “we’re not going to get a lot of runs, so field the better defense and hope we don’t concede many”. though it was probably a bit of both.

in defense of Tony, a bit
if you had four MI’s…only one of whom had a good avg and none of whom had any pop… what would YOU do?
I'd do just this
which is why I said the above. Play a solid defensive set, hope for a good game from Lohse, and wish the other side is having a bad day or bullpen implosion.

I think Tony tells them constantly
they need to win the series. He never says “sweep” the series.
by Red in Chicago on Aug 17, 2008 1:48 PM EDT up reply actions
to be fair, all we have to do is win the series here on out to get to 90 wins. so saying that is reasonable. and while he may be tired, this isn’t exactly the easiest pitcher to sweep against

Still have to play hard
and Tony has to stop sending in the AAAA team—not that he’s doing it today, but he did do it last week against the Braves. Every game counts, not just those against NL Central opponents.

Anyone think Kyle is pitching crummy
because we didn’t re-sign him before the trade deadline like he asked?
He said he was "open" to it
and that he would discuss it on favorable terms to the Cardinals if they did so before the trade deadline passed. But afterwards, they would have to get in line with everyone else. Mo’s response was that FA extensions would be handled after the season and that they were a “dstraction” during.
by Red in Chicago on Aug 17, 2008 2:14 PM EDT up reply actions
i'm glad we didn't anyways, regardless of performance here on out
there was a clear upper hand if it was done pretrade deadline not only that, but at the deadline his peak was probably as high as it’s ever been in his career, it could only go down from there

Love that 96 mph heater up and in to Ludwick.
Volquez didn’t mean it, but that is an extremely effective pitch. I wish more pitchers would throw it now and again.

Tough Decesion to Make
Should I make Indian Chicken Curry or Thai Curry Chicken for dinner?
These are two distinct dishes, the Thai is a touch sweet and has a spicy kick, where as the Indian is creamy and rich with a beautiful curry taste. There is no spice (unless you add it) in the Indian curry dish.
fan of Indian myself

lohse may need a wakeup call
kinda a dick move. Volquez was a little wild last inning, doesn’t deserve to have his head taken off by a fastball.
as i said below
that was the 2nd time volquez got the same pitch at a card, i have no problem with lohse reminding volquez that it goes both ways

to luddy was fine, lohse wasn’t. didn’t appear wildness as it was almost exact as the one to luddy, placement and all

that'd be good
we could use a couple of suspensions right now. We’ve got games we can afford to lose.
They interviewed Bruce earlier this year
and asked to what he attributed he monster numbers. You know what he said?
“Small sample size.”
He wants stolen bases
because the Reds were born to run
They say that it's never too late, but you don't get any younger...
