Sorry for the late GT, everybody
Running a bit late. I believe Roseville Redbird was first in the other thread.
Why don't you just make like a tree, and get out of here?

by RosevilleRedbird on Aug 16, 2008 7:36 PM EDT up reply actions
this is exactly why pitcher 8th
is not a winning decision. the team that scores first wins a high percentage of the games. we already lost that one and now we don’t optimize a bases loaded situation because pinata can’t hit his way out of a pinata
If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs, perhaps you haven't grasped the situation!
really?
how did the position of the pitcher matter there?
If Miles had GIDP and ended the inning, it would have mattered, but we scored the same number of runs as we would have with the pitcher hitting 9th, except that with men on 1st and 3rd piniero probably would have bunted instead of K’ing.
Wow, skip!

cruel
If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs, perhaps you haven't grasped the situation!
he's pitching injured
Along with Corey patterson being on the team and Adam Dunn gone, that’s Dusty’s contribution to the 2008 reds.
Harang probably deserved the cy young a couple years ago, though.
"..and that, my liege, is how we know the Earth to be banana shaped." -Sir Belvedere
Anyone remember all of the good pitching duels

it will be interesting what happens with miles and his more expensive twin, floppy

hopefully we will have a real SS & 2B next year
and won’t need so many redundant parts. I am a firm believer that the farm teams could provide at least one decent bench player at a much lower cost than either Miles, Izturis, Kennedy, or Lopez

Harang
Is he trying to play the “I can throw a fastball middle-in and beat everyone in your entire batting order” game? Because it is not working.
nah
he’s playing the “dusty made me throw 108+ pitches 5 times before may 6th, and now my elbow hurts” game. harang’s been abused in the past, and it’s caught up to him.
I’d put money on an off-season TJ.

Proud sponsor of the Official 2008 StL Cardinal theme song: "Beautiful Day" by U2
OK...little stretch, but...
Everyone was chirping about not going out and getting a Will Clark (a low cost, possible high reward guy) at the trade deadline. Well, Clark came over to the Cardinals at the end of the 2000 season to try and get us to the playoffs/world series and hit .345/.426/.655 in the 51 remaining games. I don’t think ANYONE expects “floppy” to do that, but Lopez has hit .357/.400/.500, before being on base twice tonight on walks, in his 9 games since coming over. Add in the walks and he’s sitting at .357/.438/.500. If he keeps up .938 OPS, I think this will be a fun team to watch down the stretch. (Hell, it’ll be fun anyway, but this will help.)
If Lopez finishes up anywhere near where Clark did on his binge
in AVG and/or OBP, I will really like that signing
* sarcasm might be involved in this comment

ok
but it took a homer from skip, not a regular outcome and only because pinata was bad enough not to hit into a double play. i still think its not the way to go.
If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs, perhaps you haven't grasped the situation!
skip was irrelevant
swap the #8 and #9 in the 2nd inning and the exact same outcome occurs, regardless of what skip does.

as long as no dp
lucky for us pinata did not hit the ball
If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs, perhaps you haven't grasped the situation!
our pitchers have GIDP twice this year
I think we can consider that a rare enough outcome to have a negligible effect on run scoring.
"..and that, my liege, is how we know the Earth to be banana shaped." -Sir Belvedere
interesting
i guess yadi’s 17 has affected that stat for pitchers, still surprising though
If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs, perhaps you haven't grasped the situation!
yup
hurt us that time, assuming Miles would have gotten a hit in his next PA.
(Of course, if miles made an out, then we’d be starting the next inning with the P leading off as an automatic out)
"..and that, my liege, is how we know the Earth to be banana shaped." -Sir Belvedere
of course that assumes they don't IBB or UIBB miles (hitting 8th)
to get to piniero hitting 9th, in which case it’s the same outcome as what just happened except you don’t have 2 leadoff men in front of albert. I guess it lets you skip the Miles PA, which is a positive thing, but not huge.
"..and that, my liege, is how we know the Earth to be banana shaped." -Sir Belvedere

That’s exactly why. In his last 5 starts before tonight Harang has given up a .355/.424/.720 line to the Dodgers, Blue Jays, Pirates, Cubs and Astros. That includes 9 homers in 26 innings and a WHIP of 2.038.

It was fun
My older brother used to beat the crap out of me though when we played. I seem to remember one of those baseball games where you could control the pitch after you threw it… :-) Terrible…

I think Albert does read stuff on the Internet actually
Probably not too much, though. I know he did post some stuff on John Rodriguez’s MLB blog in the run-up to the 2006 WS.

Ankiel has a website
and I think some of the minor leaguers have put up some things in the past. I’m not aware of anyone doing a day-by-day kind of thing. Schilling’s blog is kind of interesting in a non-controversial sort of way.

J-Rod did in '06
and maroth in ’07- based on those two samples, hope no one else considers it!

I may be wrong
but I think this would be the first year since 2000 (when Albert wasn’t even on the team) that someone other than Pujols has led the team in HRs. I guess Albert could still overtake Ludwick but I’m skeptical.
you were not wrong
and I hope Albert makes a serious run at him, especially if Luddy stays THIS hot

I don't even pay attention to Cubs games anymore
catching them is a pipe dream. They have to be a bit concerned about Zambrano though, looks injured to me
boo cubs, hooray beer
Yeah. I don't know if he's a Stage 1
type injury or more advanced. But he’s not their ace anymore. The real question is whether both he and Harden can stay healthy through October.
by Red in Chicago on Aug 16, 2008 8:26 PM EDT up reply actions
The cubs are a way better team
we aren’t going to make up any games against them in an extended period of time. We’ve got to hope to win the WC and win in a 7 game series.
Don't forget to hope for injuries
sorry, but after the Cubs fans booing injured Carp, I feel fully validated in rooting for every one of their players to have limbs amputated.
boo cubs, hooray beer
they have to have a rash of injuries, losing a key player won't really hurt them that much.
See Soriano.
would have to be both at this point
and probably soriano, edmonds and Lee as well.
"..and that, my liege, is how we know the Earth to be banana shaped." -Sir Belvedere
75-47 as of today
49-22 when he starts
26-25 when he’s not starting
I wouldn’t say rolling if they lose a key piece.

To the guy who was watching Waino's start in SPFLD
why was he removed after 64 pitches? pitch count?
boo cubs, hooray beer
He gave up a leadoff single
Got the next guy on a line-out, and the next guy struck out on a foul bunt. Then WW was pulled…
"Crud, does that booger-eating spaz make me wanna puke!" - Tanner Boyle
Probably, 64 sets him up for 80 i guess if he feels like it.
No need to be overly cautious IMO, his arm is fine.
I prefer they be overly cautious
but that just might be me
* sarcasm might be involved in this comment
I prefer that Adam can pitch beyond this year
no need for the team to possibly be without both of their top of the rotation starters who are signed to long term contracts. I love Carp and all, but who knows how much trust you can have in him for the future

seriously
why would a finger injury impact his velocity?
"..and that, my liege, is how we know the Earth to be banana shaped." -Sir Belvedere
well you fingers are they last part of your body to touch the ball and tension and wrist snap
can definitely make a difference in velocity
His velocity was fine when I saw him during the first rehad start
it was location and the break on the curve that were lacking.
fox mulder i assume
If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs, perhaps you haven't grasped the situation!
yeah, it was AAA that mulder got killed at
guess he was OK at AA, if a bit lucky.

nomar34
but he wasn’t positive it was the FB and said he also saw 91 being hit. I’m assuming the 85 was his change
boo cubs, hooray beer
85 sounds more like a cutter or a slider
I heard AW had developed a new pitch
When the time comes for me to not be bothered by losing that is when I know it is time to retire my fandom
Doesn't sound right.
If he was only hitting 85 then his arm is injured, too.
by Red in Chicago on Aug 16, 2008 8:35 PM EDT up reply actions
If it was a 2-seamer its no big deal.
He’s in the mid to high 80’s when he takes a little off quite often. As long as he was touching 91-92 as well i think its not big deal.
Mark Bulger is a terrible QB
talk about a guy who got his contract, then flat out stopped caring. (I suppose it didn’t help that he got his brains knocked out last season)
boo cubs, hooray beer
I really don't think that he's careless.
He’s gotten beaten up so badly he has become skittish. He’s constantly throwing off of his back foot now.
I dunno, I think he gets paid a fitting amount
to basically stand there and take hits because the offensive line can’t stop anyone.
That's true I guess
I’m hoping it’ll be better this year with a HOPEFULLY healthy Pace, the FA we picked up whose name is escaping me, and then maybe one of those draft picks stepping up
boo cubs, hooray beer
Jacob Bell is the FA O-lineman.
To do better this year we need three things: a healthy pace, a healthy Little, and Jackson in uniform.
he's unproven, so don't know if he'll work out
but I hope so.
Wouldn’t it be nice to have kept Kevin Curtis.
I'm actually more intrigued by Burton.
He’s not quite as fast as Avery, but is bigger and is more polished. Better hands, too.
yeah, i've heard he's been surprising people
in the limited amount i’ve followed the rams this preseason.
Really want to see these guys in action.
yeah, just pay him already.
Although they do say guys who hold out are more of an injury risk, which makes me think that deep down they know they aren’t going to stay healthy. So they want to get paid before they go down.
ok, got 2 grit points back

Re Adam's start
Just keep in mind that he wasn’t just pitching to AA, but Corpus Christi is downright awful.
As long as he feels fine and gets another rehab start or two, I’m fine

my buddy is an Astros fan and we were about 20 feet from him warming up with Ludwick at Minute Maid
him: ‘I hate Rick Ankieil.’
me: ‘Why?’
him: ‘He looks like the kind of guy who would steal your girlfriend and laugh at you afterward.’
that's pretty funny
he seems like he might be too nice to do that though.

Yeah. He seems really nice and laid back to me.
He looks like the type to really kick a guy’s ass in a fight, though. Has a “brawler” aura around him I think.
