Cardinals made claim on Washburn?
Mariners beat writer keeps hearing the St. Louis Cardinals put in a claim on Washburn, but he can't say it for certain. Buster Olney has also been linked to hearing the Cardinals claimed Washburn.

If that's the case, I'm wondering what kind of return (if any) Seattle is looking for? I can't see us giving up more than a simple prospect and that's if SEA is covering a substantial amount of his remaining contract.
Washburn's contract is not desirable at $9.375 million owed next season.
Washburn may make sense for the remainder of this season with Carpenter's status up-in-the-air, but I don't think I want him in a Cardinal uniform next season.
Anyone heard anything else about this or have any thoughts?

Next year
Washburn might be a tad pricey in 2009, but then he goes away. Weigh that against giving similar or more money to a guy like Lohse or even Looper over 3 or 4 years…which is more attractive?

I'm amazed the Yankees didn't make a claim on him

lohse and looper will want multi year deals
so why not give this a guy a shot? Lets take a look see at 2009 rotation: Carp, Wainer, and Joel P are signed nexted year. Chances are that they’ll give macClelland a shot at a spot and even with that it leaves a hole at 5. So get duncan’s “project” for next year now? This is 1.375 more than what joel will make next year, i think the guy is worth a shot.
That being said i think they should still take a run at lohse despite his return to his career norms. He has look awful good in the birds on the bat.

LB dealt w/ this issue a few weeks ago
here and made a pretty convincing argument in favor of Washburn, as opposed to re-signing Lohse. I’m still not crazy about it but it does buy us some insurance against a serious injury to Carp or Wellemyer, or flameout by Wellemeyer or Pineiro and avoids a long-term contract to a mediocre pitcher like Lohse. Plus, it helps, if even a little, this year.
He is owed $10.35 M next year and isn’t great but he’s about as good as Lohse. It makes sense that we would be the ones who claimed him. When it came up in a thread a couple of days ago, I was surprised that no one explored the possibility that we might have been the team that claimed him, particularly in light of Carp’s recent injury. We can agree to a trade if it involves no above-average prospect or put the M’s into the situation of deciding whether to leave him out there, and let him become ours for nothing, or take him back — which they’d rather not do. Not a bad idea at all.
My preference would be to go w/ younger guys and save the $10 M to use somewhere else but I can see the justification for this. As I said, I think LB’s post last month can make a better defense of this move than anything else I can say.

iffy move...
… but if the M’s pick up some salary without us sacrificing top-tier talent then it’s definitely a win. replace Lohse for next year with a guy with very similar career #s, get Lohse’s picks, let Loop walk and hopefully he’s a Type B, and go into ’09 with Carp, Waino, Welly, Wash, Piniero, with Boggs, Garcia, and Todd as insurance. Mac stays in the pen.
i’m not really sure what to think. i can see it both ways. if Mo can couple it with a trade for a MIF (Boggs or Garcia + a mid-level guy for Hu? is that possible?i have no idea what Hu’s value is anymore), then it could be okay. or if the Cards actually do bump payroll up to $110mn, then Mo still has cash to play with.
if not, then i think the team maybe gets worse.

I don't mind that they did
I wanted them to bring him in a few years ago and I think he will be a good pitcher for this team. He has pitched well on a bad team and If the Mariners pick up part of his contract I can see the Cards sending over a guy like ryan or Hoffpair
Kyle Loshe... robbed of an All Star appearance, enough said.

If they put in a claim it was a bad move
Once you put in a claim, the other team can say, ok, you take him and his entire contract. Washburn is not worth $10 million next year.
