the weekend sets up nicely for the cardinals. while they're playing a trade-depleted last-place team, the brew crew will send the rump of their rotation against the dodgers' top pitchers (billingsley, lowe, kershaw). and milwaukee has to face jake peavy tonight. so the cards have a decent opportunity to shave the gap by a game or two before they meet the brewers head-on in st. louis. make it happen, fellahs.

We are 3.5 games back heading into tonight. A win, and we are 3 games back tomorrow morning, the first day of the three-game series versus the sinking Reds, as LB noted. We need The Colonel tonight because Lord knows the horrid 6-7-8-9 punch of Lopez, Miles, Colonel, and Izturis will be detrimental to our offensive efforts this evening in south Florida.

That is not really that bad of a bottom of a lineup right now
So far Lopez has been productive but not great, Miles has no power but is still hitting over 300, The pitcher is bad at hitting yeah but that is normal, and Izturis is batting about 400 for august

has flopez
actually driven even one pitch? what i’ve seen is just a bigger slapper vis a vis the grit

the triple was well hit last night
but very well placed

He's hit quite a few line drives

For the year, or by month?
Miles is hitting .250/ .276/ .250 for August. Ahhh, fun with small sample sizes. Flopez with the Cards has been equal to AK’s production for the year, which is not productive.
Kennedy: .273/ .316/ .336 (in 271 AB)
FLopez: .286/ .318/ .381 (in 21 AB)
If we go with season-long stats then Miles isn’t so bad of an insert (unless you fear he is now regressing to his below average mean) while Izturis and Flopez are black holes. That said, Izturis has been good versus lefties at .319/ .384/ .389, which is about the only thing that merits his being handed a bat.

good point on Miles
He obviously has been struggling of late. But as far as Lopez goes, he has much better tools than Kennedy, more speed and a little more power even though we have not seen it yet.

Well let me retort
By record, the Brewers are the second-best team in the NL. If the Cubs are a level of talent above the Brewers, doesn’t that prove my original point that their road woes are overblown?

for the most part
I’m just saying that the Brew have used the home field advantage quite a bit this year, and that home field advantage happens to strike a chord with the cubbies as well.
if the cubs went to houston, or cinci and belted out some wins, would that be a true talent issue, or the home park serving up to a powerful visitor?
part of it has to be the latter.

There are just certain pitchers that I really don't like
Obviously Brandon Backe comes to mind for obvious reasons, but Scott Olsen is right up there. Talk about an ass hat. Not only did Girardi kick his ass a couple of years ago for being a tool box, but Sergio Mitre did it last year because Olsen was going out of his way to treat the clubhouse attendant like shit (he was throwing his dirty underwear, socks and jocks and screaming at the attendant to pick it up).
Some guys just deserve an ass beatin’, and tonight would be fine enough for me for another one.

I had no idea about Olsen and the clubhouse attendant. What a prick. What sort of sad human being has to treat other people like that? Hopefully karma is full force this evening.

Unbelievable
…he was arrested by Aventura, Florida police after refusing to pull over for being clocked at 48 MPH in a 35 MPH zone. He fled for about a mile, at which point he stopped at his home and sat in a plastic chair in the front yard. When police arrived and tried to arrest him, he kicked at the officers who then used a taser to subdue him. Olsen failed a field sobriety test and refused a breath test. He was booked on charges of driving under the influence, resisting arrest with violence, and fleeing and eluding a police officer.
He’s clearly troubled.

So, so nice.
For those without TV. Izturis stealing, Olsen picks him off, first baseman’s throw to second is high and away, Ramirez doesn’t get it, Izturis goes to third on the error.
Why do you think that is?
Bad coaching in the minor leagues? So many cocksure top draft picks that they’ve got a culture of blowing off instructional drills in the minors? Just a generally youthful roster? Low expectations in the fan base?
