I'm weird
one week I can eat Italian and Mexican and it doesn’t even bother me in the least. a week or two later, and my stomach’s on fire. it does this in cycles too so I can’t figure it out. I should probably just adopt a more consistent diet.

bullpen trouble...
yet AGAIN!? When will this stop?
Yadi swings and hits a high fly ball... Endy Chavez goes back, to the track, to the wall... ITS A GUNNER!! Yadi gives St. Louis the lead in the top of the ninth!
I like KMac here & most of the time
but 0-2 to the 1st 2 hitters & they both reach, thats inexcusable really to be successful in the bigs. Ive said it 100 times on this board, these guys have no out pitch, either that or the pitch to contact is miserably failing. Where is a high fastball? I really dont think Dunc wants them to throw it, because they rarely do.
And, now they probably blow another lead…when will it end
kmac is fine
one bad outing does not change that. It happens to everyone
When the time comes for me to not be bothered by losing that is when I know it is time to retire my fandom
the ump didn't do KMac any favors as well
I'm going to go try to find a puppy and kick it. - Brad Thompson AND THAT'S A WINNER!
IMO, it happens to this whole staff ALOT

Poetic justice
Imagine this scenario. Game 7 of the NLCS in Wrigley. Cubs vs. whomever. Bottom of the 9th, bases loaded, 1 out, the Cubs are down by 1. Fukudome comes up to bat with the chance to send the Cubs to their first World Series in more than half a century (1945?). He proceeds to GIDP to clinch the pennant for the other team, and all the Cubs fans sitting out there in their “Fukudome Japanese apparel” just look like idiots.

no doubt about it.
I’m starting to think Tony can’t psychologically handle a baseball world in which he doesn’t know who he will go to for the final outs

the kid has been a closer all his life
he’s blown saves, he has the mentality to bounce back. jesus christ, try and be happy that we have a legit closer finally.
boo cubs, hooray beer
he needs to show it in the big leagues
minor difference from college ball, I know…but I just thought I’d make the point
by cardsfaninmass on Aug 13, 2008 11:02 PM EDT up reply actions
and the minors.
he’s a pure closer and built as such. and I would say he is showing it in the big leagues. When there’s that much natural movement in his pitches it’s going to be hard to keep them in the zone. The only difference he’s now getting is that the batters are generally more disciplined. Thus the walks.
However, unlike the previous time he’s up, he’s trusting his stuff and continues to refine and locate the slider. Now he’s getting to the point where a walk doesn’t change anything and the coach/catcher is looking for the truest out pitch (short of K-Mac’s and Adam’s curve) on the team, his slider.

all hail overlord young pitcher!
I’m impressed too…I really am….but I just want to see how he bounces back after blowing his first save WHILE HE IS TLR’S CLEAR CLOSER.
That will be a test. Anyone who thinks he’s already cleared that test b/c he’s done it in the minors is kidding themselves.
by cardsfaninmass on Aug 13, 2008 11:12 PM EDT up reply actions
and what you may want to try and understand
is that he won’t be defined on any manner as Tony’s “clear” closer. Tony and Dunc will let the old school attitude show up and won’t give him that label, they’ll continue to push a little and put him in a place to prove.
I’d say it’s because while Tony isn’t the best at all times, he’s really trying to protect Perez from the stress as a closer in a pennant race.

and others may have thought that, but if Franklin doesn’t think of himself as a closer, he isn’t really a closer.

If Franklin didn't think of himself as the closer
he was probably wondering, “why in god’s name does tony keep calling me for the 9th inning???”
by cardsfaninmass on Aug 13, 2008 11:05 PM EDT up reply actions
Franklin said in many post game interviews
that he was just holding fort until Izzy came back and felt the change of mentality in the role harder than he thought. Said it almost the entire time Izzy was in Jupiter.

I'd argue that given a one run lead bottom of the 10th is closing
That was what happened v PITT on July 12th. He didn’t come through, went down to Memphis, worked on the slider and is back up as the unannounced closer.
except Ryan Franlin was TLR's closer a the time....
...totally different role for Perez at that time, compared to now.
by cardsfaninmass on Aug 13, 2008 10:51 PM EDT up reply actions
He has shown bouncing back
from a blown save, being demoted before pitching again then being promoted into the closer role three weeks later. I’d say he’ll handle a blown save just fine.
I hope your right....
he just hasn’t shown it yet…time will tell
by cardsfaninmass on Aug 13, 2008 11:04 PM EDT up reply actions
bounced down to Memphis and
back to the closer spot so I would agree he bounced very well.
Following the Izzy/Franklin scary as shit closer style vs the lights out style I’d like more often considering the weak heart and all.
If hes gonna be the future closer, let him finish the rest of the season and if he takes some
lumps, so be it, then that will make him stronger for next year

knowing Tony over the years
I think he may enjoy what Perez offers, but I would hazard to guess that he likes what the alternatives have to offer less, so Perez gets the ball. But it was great to follow through with a 5 out save with a couple of runners on in the 9th and having faith.
