Game 123 Overflow Thread

With the traffic that the other thread has been experiencing, I didnt think this would be necessary. Alas, the other thread was lagging. Were up 4-2 on a LaRue double to right center. Loop is pitching his backside off. The offense has been pecking away all night, finally paid off. Jason LaRue Hits Pitching looking real solid Fish on the barbee Ok, so I'm not so good at the haiku. I'm weird

one week I can eat Italian and Mexican and it doesn’t even bother me in the least. a week or two later, and my stomach’s on fire. it does this in cycles too so I can’t figure it out. I should probably just adopt a more consistent diet.

I like KMac here & most of the time

but 0-2 to the 1st 2 hitters & they both reach, thats inexcusable really to be successful in the bigs. Ive said it 100 times on this board, these guys have no out pitch, either that or the pitch to contact is miserably failing. Where is a high fastball? I really dont think Dunc wants them to throw it, because they rarely do.

And, now they probably blow another lead…when will it end

Poetic justice

Imagine this scenario. Game 7 of the NLCS in Wrigley. Cubs vs. whomever. Bottom of the 9th, bases loaded, 1 out, the Cubs are down by 1. Fukudome comes up to bat with the chance to send the Cubs to their first World Series in more than half a century (1945?). He proceeds to GIDP to clinch the pennant for the other team, and all the Cubs fans sitting out there in their “Fukudome Japanese apparel” just look like idiots.

minor difference from college ball, I know…but I just thought I’d make the point

by cardsfaninmass on Aug 13, 2008 11:02 PM EDT up reply actions

and the minors.

he’s a pure closer and built as such. and I would say he is showing it in the big leagues. When there’s that much natural movement in his pitches it’s going to be hard to keep them in the zone. The only difference he’s now getting is that the batters are generally more disciplined. Thus the walks.

However, unlike the previous time he’s up, he’s trusting his stuff and continues to refine and locate the slider. Now he’s getting to the point where a walk doesn’t change anything and the coach/catcher is looking for the truest out pitch (short of K-Mac’s and Adam’s curve) on the team, his slider.

all hail overlord young pitcher!

I’m impressed too…I really am….but I just want to see how he bounces back after blowing his first save WHILE HE IS TLR’S CLEAR CLOSER.

That will be a test. Anyone who thinks he’s already cleared that test b/c he’s done it in the minors is kidding themselves.

by cardsfaninmass on Aug 13, 2008 11:12 PM EDT up reply actions

and what you may want to try and understand

is that he won’t be defined on any manner as Tony’s “clear” closer. Tony and Dunc will let the old school attitude show up and won’t give him that label, they’ll continue to push a little and put him in a place to prove.

I’d say it’s because while Tony isn’t the best at all times, he’s really trying to protect Perez from the stress as a closer in a pennant race.

that's why his fastball is considered brillant

it’s not just speed, but can get some nice action as well

if he can perfect that pitch, no one will hit it

is that a fast ball in your pants?

or are you just happy to see me?

yeah

once he perfects it when he’s amped, the walks will hardly ever be there, it’s that action that gets him wild.

and add a slider that scares the hell out of moles, you have something

Not that we actually need him right now

but why hasn’t Motte got a look yet, I know people will say he only has a fastball, but has anyone ever seen Broxton through anything but a FB? ( I haven’t )That Nelson guy for the Marlins looks pretty effective only throwing the heater.

+1

ML hitter may get to Motte, but they have to see him once or twice to do so

I don't know

Nelson’s fastball has some decent, if not good movement. Motte’s is quite straight. Motte is developing secondary pitches however, and should get a look in Sept.

I haven't seen Motte's

is it straight? Have you? I am willing to believe that. I am just asking because when I think straight fastball, I think one that is right down the pipe.

it's fk'n fast

but yeah, it’s quite straight. It’s one of those fastballs that you’ll grow to love if it hits the bottom third of the zone, bite nails when it’s up, and drop your head when it’s in the middle third.

and yes, I have. a couple of times. one one inning stint and a two inning stint

here's a link that has a motte tidbit

worth a read i thought he was working on a slider, didn’t know it was a cutter.

Oh, and by the way

Great Job tonight Tony! Way to have faith in Perez! I am thinking Tony is liking Perez as the closer.

knowing Tony over the years

I think he may enjoy what Perez offers, but I would hazard to guess that he likes what the alternatives have to offer less, so Perez gets the ball. But it was great to follow through with a 5 out save with a couple of runners on in the 9th and having faith.
