Game 122 Open Thread: August 12 2008

St. Louis Cardinals @ Florida Marlins

Lohse Volstad
13-4, 3.80 3-2, 2.67

here's a short article about the marlins' starter, chris volstad, that i saw at fangraphs this morning. he's a sinkerballer --- only 1 hr allowed this year in 123 combined AA-MLB innings, and a big-league GB ratio of 56 percent. the cards often have trouble with this type of pitcher. he doesn't have great control though, and he's bound sooner or later to leave a couple pitches up and pay the price. maybe tonight.

i'll be out of pocket all evening; i've programmed one overflow thread, which will open at 7:30 CDT.

Put on waivers. Should we claim him and arrange a trade with the Tigers?

Is he the protection of Pujols though? Yes he would take away AB from Mather for the next 6 weeks.

Im with you

if he’s gonna take ab’s away from Bomberman, I dont want anything to do with it. I think we need to continue to see what we have in the kids before we bring in some “washed up” (loosely applied), veteran(s).

it's not a huge sacrifice or anything.

We probably wouldn’t need to give up much if we took on a decent chunk of his salary.

His 09 contractwoul d change my mind. I’m all for playing the young kids but it seems like the concensus on this blog to win now?

by doug_4409 on Aug 12, 2008 6:35 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

sorry

but I would take him over Mather for this year. We can get Mather back in September, anyway. Shef is a big time talent, and Mather has shown he’s still rocky (just look at him against a slider).

That, and like you said, we won’t have to deal with Lopez in the OF anymore.

sheff has a sub-.700 OPS this year

and he’s 39, so that’s probably not a fluke. Mather and Schumaker can likely both out-hit him at this point.

it was .839 at 38 years old . . .

there’s also a chance that his first year at full-time DH has thrown off his hitting. There is a psychological factor in baseball. Some people just can’t do the DH thing.

Still, even if he hits at an .850 OPS clip, he won’t be that much of an upgrade over Mather and will be a defensive liability…

no organization has a problem with it

so many players from the past decade have that potential lingering over them. It’d be like shooting fish in a barrel, so it’s not worth it to worry too much about it when signing a player (unless they used it this year).

glaus 2 away from 300

didn’t realize he was that close. maybe he can have one of his two homer nights tonight.

by adiueordie on Aug 12, 2008 7:22 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

it's at least 4

in fact, 5 teams had 4 guys with 100 RBI’s in 1999: ARI, CLE, COL, NYY, and TEX. Since then the angels did it in ‘00 and the braves did it in ‘03. I’m sure someone at some point had a team with 5, but I only went back to ‘99.

If Ankiel has one of his hot streaks, we could possibly have 4…

It's really barely a factor

This was discussed ad nauseum earlier this year. Almost only a style issue. The only problem comes when the guys on either side of the pitcher can’t hit their weight.
