Game 121 overflow

should be interesting to see who pitches the bottom of the 9th inning . . . . . assuming there is a bottom of the 9th. if there is, i vote for the old miami hurricane, chris perez.

cards lead it 3-2 at the stretch.

He's not pitching any better than usual

4K, 2BB, 1HR is pretty typical. The defense has been spectacular behind him, and the outfield wall is a long ways behind him.

And Pujols struck out for the third time in a game, tying a personal record (I think.)

his contact percentage

is the highest of his career—89.86%. He only swings and misses about 10% of the time. That is the lowest of his career. If he’s fooled more often, he’s still putting his bat on the ball more often as well.

by chuckb on Aug 11, 2008 10:50 PM EDT up reply actions

did i read that right? only 10% of the time when Albert takes a swing he misses the ball? that’s incredible.

his plate discipline numbers are still incredible, though

it’s surprising because it seems anecdotally like he’s really expanding his zone, but he’s only slightly worse than he has been in the past, on the order of 1-2 balls per 100 pitches out of the zone. And he makes contact with over 95% of the ball in the strike zone- and 73% of the balls he swings at out of the zone- that’s just incredible.
