St. Louis Cardinals at Florida Marlins, Aug 11, 2008 7:10 PM EDT

Pineiro Sanchez
4-5, 5.04 1-1, 4.22

the marlins are dead last in the big leagues in attendance. all 29 of the other teams have long since passed the million mark, but the marlins have still drawn only about 929,000. they will be have to exceed their per-game average to get past a million patrons during this 4-game series. . . . .

if that was just a live shot on the FSN MW pre game

there were about two people in the stands at 6:15pm est. how sad. i know it’s been raining off & on, but it always does that in Miami in the summer.

MLB should be ashamed of themselves for having a team down there. no one cares, and no one goes to the games. get them out of South Beach already Bud!

yeah,,uh,,i hate to break it to you, but it's not a done deal just yet

i love wiki & all, but they dont have all the facts. they have a ton, but not all. at least they covered the current lawsuit & site move that has every thing blocked & at a stand still right now. so just because they’ve torn down the orange bowl, doesn’t mean the marlins are staying put. go here. there’s a lot of good info there. more links to updated stories.

i’m still hopeful it falls through. south beach has no business having a MLB franchise.

Cannot really blame the fans though

the last two times they won it all, the ENTIRE team was let go. Not a good way to keep a fan base. Then again, they almost always have really good and young exciting talent

But they've won two World Series in like 15 years.

So their fans can’t complain too much.

In the world I see--you are stalking elk through the damp canyon forests around the ruins of Rockefeller Center. You'll wear leather clothes that will last you the rest of your life. You'll climb the wrist-thick kudzu vines that wrap the Sears Tower. And when you look down, you'll see tiny figures pounding corn, laying strips of venison on the empty carpool lane of some abandoned superhighway.

I'm ok with that

We’re in a playoff hunt this year, but next year and the years beyond are still much more important to me. Chris Carpenter is no doubt a huge part of the success we may or may not have in those years, so I’d rather they err on the conservative side with this issue.

you're right

how many days has glaus had off recently? i can’t think off the top of my head when he’s been out of the lineup as of late. granted he had two home runs on satruday, i’m sure the season is starting to wear on him. he looked pretty frustrated on that check swing late in the game last night. i think it is a much deserved day off for him.

by 916baller on Aug 11, 2008 6:42 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not to mention.....

Lopez is 5-13 against tonight’s starter.

by SoonerfanTU on Aug 11, 2008 6:46 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree that Glaus probably needs some rest

But 13 at-bats is a pretty meaningless sample size. None of those hits went for extra bases, by the way.

Exactly how many AB's before it means something?

And I disagree that 13 is too small. Not saying I’d base a million dollar decision on it, but when you have a guy that probably needs a day off, and another that is 5-13 against the SP, I’d make that deal.

by SoonerfanTU on Aug 11, 2008 6:55 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It's an empty 5-for-13

Like I said, no doubles, triples, or homers. 13 is a tiny small sample size – like 3 or 4 games’ worth of at-bats. We just saw Albert go 0-13 (or something like that) against the Phils. Did that mean anything, other than that he had 3 bad games?

by jdub176 on Aug 11, 2008 7:02 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

individual batter splits vs a pitcher are never more predictive

of future performance for that batter vs that pitcher than the individual batter and pitcher performances vs the rest of the league. Splits vs a given pitcher should never be used for decision making unless there is a handedness split involved.

The actual number of PA’s required to be even marginally predictive would be somewhere in the 3-4 thousand range and no one is ever going to amass that many PA’s against a given pitcher.

Right.....

So every coach uses these splits, but you think they are worthless?

by SoonerfanTU on Aug 11, 2008 7:23 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

he just told you why they're worthless

I don’t know that every coach uses them. No one seems to rely on them as much as La Russa, and I’m sure some of those guys realize it’s a waste of time.

From reading the site the last two days

it’s become apparent to me through the way others view me that I am the problem with the attitude on this site. As much as I love this site and the phenomenal work that is done by the commentators, I can see now that it is best that I leave so that the bile and vitriol that has taken over the site will cease.

Goodbye.

What's going on

I haven’t been able to comment much lately but I always enjoyed your takes. We have not agreed much but I never saw anything in your comments that would inspire vitriol. However, I have to agree with you that the tone of this site has changed. It reminds me more and more of Bernie’s Pressbox and Cards Talk.

I truly appreciate the hard work that Larry et al put into this site and it pains me to see it reduced to the level of the PD Forums.

It seems than whenever someone voices their opinion

someone will jump on them. After awhile, a new person especially gets discouraged. We just want a friendly place to air our vents against the manager or a player or another team, and make our suggestions and comments. This may sound corny, but I’m from out of town and I have shocked at the rudeness I’ve seen here (from a number of people, not just one or two). That’s not how I view Cardinal fans.

Hey, we’re all rooting for the same team, so may I humbly suggest all of us be a little more civil to each other? That includes the language.

it seems that the same people who get upset at us for being critical in a loving way think that any decision that anyone in the cardinal orginaztion makes should never be questioned. +1 on the language

though, adults will talk how they see fit. This site has seen better days as far as the game threads go. I’ve been here for all of last season, and this season so far, as well and its been my observation that, recently, the gamethreads get very venomous at the drop of a hat.

it was worse in '06 IIRC

especially during those long, long losing streaks.

Though the real-time update “feature” gives the site more of a glorified chat room feel, and that lowers the quality of the discussion, especially during game threads.

HL,

I don’t know what’s been going on, but I hope you’ll reconsider…I have always enjoyed your contributions to VEB…I hate to see anybody run off this site because of differences in opinions…we all want the same thing here: a winning team in St Louis…shouldn’t that be enough, even if we all don’t agree on the best way to do it??

Besides, I would miss that Keith Hernandez avatar…it’s always made me feel that he’s participating…you may very well be him, for all I know.

Don't run away

I should run away because I hate all the venting. Some people post without looking at the stats. Like Izturis hitting against LHers. He should be in the lineup all the time and some of you do not think a .370 obp against Lhers is adequate. No idea why? Like I said some want Albert batting in all 9 positions and well that is never going to happen. Most teams have holes in the lineup.

by llabyellov on Aug 11, 2008 7:12 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Izturis is fine against LHP

if he would only play against lefties most of us would all be fine. The problem is that he plays against RHP way more often than he should. I think sometimes his ineptness against righties gets to us too much, if that is possible.

there’s a reason why 1 out of 2 times you post a fanpost, it shows under “recommended fanposts” and it’s because you do your reseach and you turn them into quality fanposts. it’s the same with the comments. the attitude isn’t your fault, it’s the sites.

by stlcardinalsfang on Aug 11, 2008 7:10 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Don't go

I agree that the level of snark on this site has increased a lot lately. I think you bring a good perspective. Usually you take the time to bring some actual support for your positions, which is all a person can ask.

I think most of us feel personally invested in the Cards, so when things turn south as they are now the fuses get shorter. Myself included. It’s a little easier to go for the gratitious cheapshots when you’e pissed, and most of us are a little right now. We can all make an effort to clean up some of the personal shots and stay topical with our comments, and this site can still be a strong resource for the Cardinal fan. I think there’s enough mature posters here to avoid it degenerating into anything like the P-D boards.

To HL:

I would really hate to see you go HL. You are by far one of the more honest and fun posters on this board. It would be a great loss for you to leave forever. If I can offer a little advice…maybe just take a few days or a week off and let things like the Edmonds stuff cool down. That stuff will be a distant memory in a matter of days.

Also this is a board about the Cardinals…things said around here really shouldn’t be taken too seriously. I know there are a very small few on here that love to prove they are right all the time..but you just have to blow off some of their comments. In the end this is a board to post about our passion for all things St. Louis Cardinals. Don’t let a few take that fun away from you. So think about taking a few days off or whatever but remember there are those of us here that like your fan posts and your comments.

Guarded optimism: I keep telling myself

that a lot of strange things have happened in the month of September, so don’t give up hope on the Cards. There are some famous collapses by teams, as you know. But what worries me is falling behind another team besides the Brewers (like tonight’s opponent). Making up ground on several teams is asking too much. In other words, we have to step up beginning tonight to hang in this race. Losing Carpenter again is another big blow.

It's ex-Phillie Garcia

who was working out in Miami (which is why I thought Marlins).

The Red Sox, among a half dozen other teams, sent a scout to look at Freddy Garcia throwing in Miami on Tuesday. Garcia is finishing his rehab from season ending sugery last season and now will make a decision to sign with a team.
