The Reds

Living with 90 miles of the Great American Ballpark, I hear much of the Reds.  The tired story of cheap ownership and inept front office mgt has typically been a replay every year for over a decade.

Now we have a new drama - this team 52-66? and last place.  I bet Castellini is fuming - and he should be.  When the Reds had zero starting pitchers for several years and a fortune invested in Eric Milton, you could almost feel sorry for them.  But now they have some decent starters (Harang, Arroyo sort of, Volquez, Cueto) a nice collection of veterans some exciting youngsters like Bruce and Votto.

Though a Cardinal fan, I picked the Reds as my surprise team this year but boy have they underwhelmed.  It's sort of ironic that for years the Reds have fired capable managers who lacked the assets to win but now they have assets but a manager who will not be fired.  (yet)

I loved Dusty as a player but never as a manager.  Walt should fire him yesterday.

Obviously a Cubs fan like me

Would hate him. Nobody liked him. And if they want Volquez and Cueto to stick around they better fire him. He ruins young arms. Period. I think the should’ve kept Pete McKanin (spelling probably wrong).

Not to mention Adam Dunn bunting

who is insane enough to make Adam Dunn bunt? It’s the craziest idea anyone ever heard.

They say that it's never too late, but you don't get any younger...

same thing happened with Edwin Encarnacion...

... Dusty had him try to bunt twice in the 9th inning and he made two strikes; then, he hit a game-winning homer.

what an idiot.

It would be my hope

that the Reds will allow the Cardinals to stomp them for the rest of the season. 8 wins would be very nice! better luck next year, I think a lot of people expected more outta the Reds this year, including myself. unfortunately looks like you might be stuck with Dusty for a little while longer

It will be interesting to see what the Reds do this winter.

And to see what plans Walt has to make them a better club. I actually wouldn’t be suprised to see them fire Dusty and get a new manager. But I really think they need to resign Dunn. Loosing him will make their already poor offense even worse and i don’t think they have a hitter in the minors that can bring the power that Dunn has. Jay Bruce should get better be he can’t carry the team by himself. I look for them to become buyers this winter and to be active in trading. Their team needs major help and I think getting rid of Dusty Baker should be the first thing on their list in November.

Dunn to Diamondbacks

Walt got a jump on the winter moves and helps out the Cards by depleting Cincy’s offense while we still have 9 games against them.

Too bad Walt...

is the GM. Otherwise maybe we could take Phillips off their hands. $11 million in 2011 is daunting, but wouldn’t it be worth it to finally end the Aaron Miles era?

I'd take Phillips

in a heartbeat. We can fire LaRussa and install Miles as player/coach. :D

by Hardcore Legend on Aug 10, 2008 4:06 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Nah

Phillips is part of their “future.” They just need to fill a ton of holes, too.

and I forgot to mention

Homer Bailey…...........the Anthony Reyes of Cincinnati…......what have they done to him?

by Hinkster on Aug 10, 2008 4:57 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I don't know

but he’s had major control problems. With that said, if they ever offer him up cheap, I would love to take a chance on him.

Wonder if LaRussa would consider

coaching the Reds after St. Louis…assuming there is an after St. Louis.

by Red in Chicago on Aug 10, 2008 5:05 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

the Reds just hired Bill Bavasi...

... as a special assistant to Jock. in other words, things are about to actually get worse for Cinci; not better.

they did shed Griffey, so that helps with the money situation for next year. i honestly don’t know why they are so bad this year. they have the makings of an okay offense with Dunn, Phillips, Keppinger, Encarnacion, Votto, and Bruce. and the pitching has been decent, and should get even better next year.

they’ve had a lot of injuries, but i think they have a fairly bright future if Jock can make a few savvy moves while still allowing the kids to develop. maybe next year is their year.

I imagine that when the Brewers lose 2/3rds of their pitching staff

in the off-season, the Brewers and Reds will switch spots in the division….well, actually Houston will be in last place but the Reds will be contenders, the Brewers will be also rans.

by Hardcore Legend on Aug 10, 2008 7:17 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

You're forgetting that the Brewers have

Gallardo (injured) and Villenueva (bullpen) to fill in those spots. Gallardo has top starter type stuff; if he doesn’t get hurt this year they may not have dealt for CC in the first place. Villenueva was good for them in spot starting duty last season and has been a decent arm out of the bullpen as well. Their pitching staff won’t be as formidable as this seasons, but I don’t think it puts them in the bottom of the division by any means—and that’s assuming they don’t shell out for one of those two guys in the offseason.

Reds fan here

None of my roomates follow baseball, but when I came home on Friday and explained that we’d hired Bavasi, they said I looked like I’d just broken up with someone.

And I’m not normally one to wish the Cardinals well, but we’re so far out of it, what the hell. I hope Felipe Lopez can work out for you a tenth as well as Kyle Lohse has.

Despite

their excellent bullpen, the Reds only have one good starting pitcher in Volquez. Harang Arroyo and Cueto have been sub-bar, Pineiro-esque even, all year long and their options for that 5th starter are even worse. As for offense, jeez, Dunn is a ball player, and I like the infield (except Keppinger), but that’s about it. Patterson is just a big drain on this offense. OPS+ of 40? Chalk that up to the Dusty man.

This team has been a disaster this year. On the bright side, Brenanukkah, there is still a lot of upside on the roster. You’ll just have to pray that Jocketty doesn’t, you know, pull something along the lines of the Haren-trade.

poor keppinger

must be still playing hurt. He had a .819 OPS before the knee injury (163 PA) and a .519 OPS (173 PA) since coming back… Might be a good off-season pickup for Mo, if he fully heals in the off-season.

Patterson otoh is just a terrible ballplayer, especially if you keep in mind that 4 of his 7 home runs were in the first 10 days of the season. Since then he’s had 218 PA’s of .451 OPS- playing half his games in a hitters paradise. Yikes.

Wow

I didn’t realize how utterly horrible he’d been.

But then again, who could’ve possibly seen this coming?

Oh wait…everyone but Baker. Literally. Everyone.

Not to take joy in the misery of Reds fans

But I do like it when the experts trendy “sleeper” pick fails so badly.
