Game 112 -- Philadelphia Phillies @ St. Louis Cardinals -- August 1, 2008
Philadelphia Phillies at St. Louis Cardinals, Aug 1, 2008 8:15 PM EDT
Hamels Lohse
9-6, 3.27 12-3, 3.68
The Phillies are a good team with a potent offense. They'll be tossing one of the better left-handers in the league against the Cardinals tonight in Cole Hamels. They'll aslo feature several lefty bats that Jaime Garcia may be called upon to nuetralize. Kelvin Jimenez gets sent down (I'm 2-for-2 in getting relievers demoted -- you're welcome.) with Stavinoha sticking around. With Rick Ankiel still injured and, again, the Cardinals unwilling to DL him, the bench trumps the pen.
Overflow comes up at 8:30pm.

I'm fully aware wins are a pretty meaningless
stat with pitchers in general
but it’s outright amazing that Lohse needs to win today and the next game just to hit .500 for his career.
and that would be 14-3 for this year.

Depends on the pitcher

well true, but it’s not often that a pitcher has to go 14-3 just to have a career win record @ .500

Lohse is either a late bloomer
a convert to Duncanism or a statistical anomaly. If we sign him after the season, I hope he’s a late bloomer, since Duncan may retire soon, and we already have one statistical anomaly in the rotation.

Well
He’s been with a different team four years in a row. And he can thank $cott Bora$ for all that packing and moving, since he’s the one who advocates players go year to year to maximize his, e, I mean the player’s take. The jerk.
Anyway, why not three years with STL for $12 million per? Sounds about right—about what Suppan got. Lohse is maybe a little better than Soupcan, though perhaps with more room to regress to his mean. And he also has won any big playoff games that I can recall. I would consider that a pretty fair deal.

Did those 3 ER that Tony and Co contested on Lohse’s stats stick? The ones where they thought Ryan made an error (at 3rd if I recall correctly).

Izzy's velocity has dropped
and he can find the plate.
TLR’s gonna have to bring in Franklin

That was a good game. Glad Ludwick hit those two homers, same to Mather.
We would be toast without Mather. Who here thinks he’s the real deal?
i was ticked when they sent him down
when they called him up the first time..think they should let him stay a bi

He is a legitimate
power hitter. Whether he can field is another question.

HL brought up a good comparison
there is alot of similarities between Joe Mather and Alex Rios, and let’s face it, we’d all love to have our very own Alex Rios

Yeah, #62.
We’re 4 back of the dreaded Cubbies.
Izzy's stuff looked pretty good up there
I dont like the walk of Rollins, but that was typical Izzy. Walk a batter to get to the matchup you want (even though it burns him 9 out of 10 times lately)
boo cubs, hooray beer
He has in the past,
but this year we have handled him both times we have seen him.
It would be cool if everything just came together perfectly
Wainer back, Carp sharpens up in 2 starts, and Izzy gets it back together. With this rotation:
Carp
Wainer
Loshe (Good Version)
Welly (Good Version)
Loop
I’ll take my chances

Don't know if this has been mentioned but...
Duncan is undergoing season ending surgery. On a personal level, i feel bad for the kid, but on a baseball level, i’m glad. No longer will TLR have the option to put him in games.
boo cubs, hooray beer
Any chance we'll re-sign Springer to another 1 or 2 year deal?
or do you think he’ll retire?
It’d be nice if he came back for one more year at 5 million or so.
boo cubs, hooray beer
He's still mighty effective
I would say, yes he would come back, and yes we would offer him another 1-year deal.

Anybody want a good laugh
Check out what the WWL thinks of the Cards in their “rankings”. Their pure disrespect and hate for such a historic team with the 2nd most Championships in the great game is pretty sad and it says a lot for what’s supposed to be “The world wide leader of sports media”.
So, how exactly do ...
the NY teams, the DBacks, the Marlins, and the Tigers get ranked ahead of the Cardinals. The Tigers are two f’in’ games above .500, for cryin’ out loud. How are the Brewers ranked 5 spots ahead? They have virtually the same record. It’s crazy.
It goes along with Peter Gammons championing himself and Buster Olney for being the only two to let people know there is baseball between the coasts just because he mentions the Twins every third time he is interviewed.
Eh
btw, are you talking about the ranking or the comments? Cause the comments aren’t that bad. Besides, those rankings are so influenced by the past week (one in which they got swept by the Brewers, got beat by the mets and beat up on a really bad Braves team). I wouldn’t put much into it, plus like has been said before. the more the national eye looks past the Cardinals, the better right?
In the world I see--you are stalking elk through the damp canyon forests around the ruins of Rockefeller Center. You'll wear leather clothes that will last you the rest of your life. You'll climb the wrist-thick kudzu vines that wrap the Sears Tower. And when you look down, you'll see tiny figures pounding corn, laying strips of venison on the empty carpool lane of some abandoned superhighway.
I'm talking about the ranking
but being tied with the 2nd best record in the NL should put us in 14th place in baseball??
I don’t get offended by this as much as I should but ESPN’s pure hatred for the Cardinals is really weird. I really don’t get it. Do they just hate the fact that a team other than the Yankees has had a lot of success in post season with the number of Championships won or is there some other motive?
$$$$$$$
It’s as simple as that. If the Cards played in a huge media market, they’d get all the attention. I try not to let it bother me. It’s more enjoyable to go under the radar. Then again, if you live outside the FSN viewing area, I can understand how it would be bothersome.
i feel bad for those that have to depend on the WWL
for their baseball coverage. unless its a coast team or the flubs, dont even bother watching because they generally dont have a clue when it comes to fly over state teams.

don't take 'em seriously
that doesn’t mean we’re going to lose anyways
Izzy getting boo'd
who is to blame for this? He was getting boo’d pretty hard a Busch Stadium tonight. When he came in, boos. When he would throw a ball, boos. When a runner got on, boos. When he came to bat, boos.
So, who is to blame for the general disdain the Cardinals fans have for Isringhausen? Is it Izzy for sucking so bad this season? LaRussa for trotting him out there when he wasn’t ready? The fans for not forgiving him for trying to give away the division this year?
Something else that bothered me. Dan and Al were rambling on and on about HOW COULD YOU TAKE IZZY OUT FOR A PH!!! IT WOULD COST HIM THE SAVE!
Technically, if Miles had bunted the runners over, a pinch hitter came in for Izzy and got a sacrifice fly and we went up 4 runs…wouldn’t Izzy still get the save?
by Hardcore Legend on Aug 2, 2008 12:52 AM EDT reply actions
I didn't get to watch most of the game
but I’m confused by that last sentence.
If Izzy were to be pinch hit for, no matter what, he wouldn’t get a save since he didn’t finish the game. You have to finish the game.

You're right
I thought Villone didn’t finish the game the other day and still got the save. I guess Cpt. Ron did get the final 4 outs.

the crowd was a joke all night long
you are dead on about how they treaded IZZY. it was a pretty pathetic showing by “the best fans in baseball”
i really want that BS to stop. any fans that give so freaking taguchi a standing O every time he comes to the plate are not any where close to being the best fans in baseball.
I'm going to go try to find a puppy and kick it. - Brad Thompson AND THAT'S A WINNER!
I was at the game
The crowd wasn’t booing Izzy, we felt he wasn’t getting calls he should have been getting. The people in my section were behind Izzy all the way, as I would assume most of the crowd was. We understood that Izzy would need to get multiple baserunners on before he could convert the save. The entire stadium stood and clapped for the final two outs of the game. I don’t understand how that makes them BS fans or “a joke”. Also, applauding So Taguchi is the kind of thing that sets the Cardinals’ fan base apart from the real BS fans who don’t understand anything about baseball.
Thanks, Turk

and then stop. he’s gotten a standing O every freaking time he’s come to the plate. it’s a joke. and needs to stop.
hell Edmonds didnt get a standing O every time he came to bat, but so does? give me a break.

heh. also… Taguchi isn’t a freaking CUB.
I have a love/hate relationship with the Cardinals' middle relief corps.
