that game sucked
Could have been much worse. Can’t fault the pitching though. Bullpen had to pitch 8.2 innings. And they held the Phillies to 4 runs. Sorry. The philies are team can score 8 in any game. So kudos to them. Someone wake up the offense. Get Glaus; Ankiel; Ludwick; and Pujols together for a few games huh? Throw in a little heroics from Mather and Duncan and some dinks by our middle infielders.
Oh well. Tomorrow will be interesting. To bad im going to really busy at work.
PS. I really feel for Mulder.

VIN ruined one the other night by not shutting up about it from the 4th inning on
i just turned it on, is he doing the same thing again tonight?

anyone else feel like
if the offense could get going for two weeks – we’d be right up the Cubs’ tail?
as much as we (I) bitch about this team, and the sky is falling, etc – they’re still only 4.5 back

and 1st in the wild card still
yeah, if the offense gets rolling, that would solve a lot of problems. except the problem that the cubs keep winning a lot of games

yep
and it always seems like the games they DO lose – Cards lose too – can’t capitalize

exactly
for a week or so, we were winning every game that they were, and losing at the same time too

You know, we could improve the offense
and not lose any prospects if we’d just go ahead and sign Barry Bonds.

is it really a matter of buying or selling anymore?
If the Cardinals didn’t have enough confidence to start ANYONE else besides Mulder, what do they do now that he was a fluke? I think there’s no question you need to trade for a starting pitcher. It’s not a question of if you’re buying or selling; I think it’s in the best interests of the organization. Why put in someone who would benefit from more time in AAA or who you don’t think is going to be any good at all?
I don't think they lacked confidence in others
I think it had more to do with the fact that they had a lefty throwing 90-92 mph with an above average curveball and 102+ wins in his career and wanted to see if he was ready to return to the rotation.
And it didn’t even cost us the game.
by Hardcore Legend on Jul 10, 2008 12:16 AM EDT up reply actions
But who’s going to take his spot in the rotation? Someone like Paul Byrd, Randy Wolf, or Erik Bedard seems as logical of a choice as anybody currently in the bullpen or AAA.
In fact, MLBtraderumors.com writes that the Padres hope to acquire up-the-middle players. I wonder if the Cards would be able to trade Kennedy or Ryan for Wolf (though the no-trade clause would be a problem).
ESPN would really like it if the Cardinals would get out of the Brewers
way for 2nd place. All they seem to talk about is the Cubs lead over the Brewers even though the Cardinals HAVE THE 2ND BEST RECORD IN THE NL!

Man I swear the Cards are the only "historic and successful" franchise in baseball
or maybe even in all of sports that the East Coast media constantly ignores or looks down upon. The Cards have always been the Rodney Dangerfield in baseball….Don’t get no respect. Not just this year…but basically every year….even in 2004.
Agreed
I’m a Raiders fan and they also don’t get much respect either, although plenty more than el Birdos
Brewers: no postseason since 1982, 3rd place in the NL Central
Cubs: no World Series since 1908, 1st place in the NL Central
Cardinals: most World Series victories of any NL team, last one coming in 2006, 2nd place in NL Central
Pick two of those teams to talk about, why would it be the Cubs and Brewers?

Excellent news, I would say
This clearly concentrates the mind even more on the starting pitcher problem. I think there must have been some fairly strenuous calls with Mo, Dave, Tony and DeWallet this evening. This is great because it will narrow the possibilities and the range of actions, hopefully pointing in one direction (the farm) or the other (the trade market). If Mo’s going to go after Bedard or Burnett he needs to know he doesn’t have, net-net, a much cheaper alternative sitting in Memphis (or Springfield).
by Red in Chicago on Jul 10, 2008 1:24 AM EDT up reply actions
Well, Garcia has struggled
with his secondary pitches and control while in Memphis. This is probably just a move for the bullpen since we won’t need a 5th starter until after the break.

wow, check out this quote from MO about Marks future
“He’s just not getting over the hump,” Mozeliak said. “Typically, I have a very optimistic tone. But in this case, it’s hard to envision this getting to a point where it’s going to work for us or for him.”
that’s some strong language from your GM folks. i haven’t seen that quote any where else either.
apparently, it really is over for Mulder.
here’s a link to the story

It's just awful
The guy’s career really does seem to be over.
by Red in Chicago on Jul 10, 2008 1:48 AM EDT up reply actions
It's awful..but it was probably best to find out now
and not keep having this “Will Mulder come back and be the Mark Mulder of old for us” mystery surrounding the team going into the stretch run in August & Sept.
Yeah I feel sorry for the guy…but in honesty I don’t think he and his agent were real truthful about his health to the Cardinals when he re-signed last year…..but that’s water under the bridge and it’s time to move on…
Yeah, I just saw some stuff on Garcia
Turns out he has reverse splits, with lefties hitting .304 against him in Memphis. I think he may just be a long/mop-up type arm until the break. But who gets the call then? Thompson, Boggs? Can’t take a lot of comfort in those names. And then you’ve got the looming possibility of Wellemeyer needing DL time. Mulder would have been a hell of a good alternative if he could pitch. I guess there’s Jess Todd…

Moving him really, really fast
I could see him being very, very good with Duncan’s planning and our infield defense behind him.
I’m cautiously optimistic.
We just need to win out until the break
Gotta beat up on the Pirates (for once!) this weekend

Agree but we need to start scoring more than 2 runs per game.
And hopefully have guys on when we hit HRs and not just solo shots. It seems like it has been a long time since we have had a “laugher” where we score 8-10 runs and not have to worry about the bullpen.
Disturbing stat for the month so far..
In the month of July so far (8) games we have scored a total of 24 runs while the other teams have scored at total of 42 runs against us. We have a record of 3-5 for these games and have scored 2 runs or less in 5 of these 8 games.
I know it is only a little more than a week in the season…but the offense needs to get going if we are going to stay at the top in the wild card hunt because not only do we have to deal with the Brewers but the Mets and Marlins are starting to breath down our necks as well. They are only 3.5 games back.
