What this team needs is a Larry Walker part 2.

Not sure it could happen again or who for but I think this team needs a Larry Walker trade. The trade that Walt pulled off in late 04 that said to the team "we believe". I'm not sure that this teams is as good as 04. But I think that if they were able to do a move this team is dare I say "gritty" enough to win...maybe not it all but maybe the division.

I like this years team as they are not flashy, have had tons of injuries, and yet still win. The other thing about the Walker trade that made it so great is it just kinda happened. He wasn't to my knowledge a name being shopped and then bam the Cards had him. There are tons a names floating this year C.C,Holliday,Maddux, etc. Who could be this years under the radar guy? Maybe an under performing Giles?

I might be dreaming, but who could you see the cards getting whether it be bullpen help, or a bat, what would it do to chemistry could it help or hurt? My thought is go get a starter cause I'm not sure this group can hold it together all yr. What do you think

i think it would be outstanding to get c.c.

i realize it’s not gonna happen, but to get him and then sign him as a FA would do a lot to bolster the rotation…

haven't seen this named mentioend

other than mlbtraderumors just saying how good of a season he’s having. Ron Mahay.. http://kansascity.royals.mlb.com/team/player.jsp?player_id=118158. He’s 37 and not sure his contract, plus he’s a lefty

I agree with you

and I am concerned about Milwaukee getting C.C. I’d really hate to see the Brewers buy themselves a playoff spot, knocking us out of it (if it came down to that – IF the Cubs hold on to first). What are the chances the Cards will ever sign a big-name free agent pitcher like Sabbathia?

by ccthemovieman on Jul 4, 2008 7:58 PM EDT reply actions

Considering the Carpenter signing....

not to mention the Kevin Brown, Mike Hampton, and Barry Zito signings….I’d say it’d be a reeeeaally long time before the cards ever throw more than 100 mill at a pitcher….maybe 15-20 years from now if ever

Holliday is our man

I think holliday would make our offense the most formidable in the central

by SATXcardinal on Jul 4, 2008 11:18 PM EDT reply actions

takes way too much

I’d love to see him here, too, but he costs way too much—especially considering we’d need to particularly wow them since he’s not a free agent until next year.

Our best option is still a second basemen or shortstop. Who? I don’t know right now.

On with the (good) youth movement!

the other problem is a lot of teams need exactly what we need -- LHRP and a SS

and the one place that’s dealing a SS has David Eckstein (and is looking to replace him w/ a new one). But LA doesn’t seem to think Nomar is fixing Furcal’s absence, Baltimore wants one (though why a team w/ no prayer of making the playoffs would try to fix that hole mid-season is beyond me). There’s a lot of demand for them and right now the plethora of starters we thought we might have has dried up.

I doubt we make big moves mid-season honestly. If we can land one talented reliever, that will be about it.

right

so we target 2B. I feel like a Grudzy or Durham could definitely happen.

And if we can land one talented reliever, that would make me very happy.

Holiday would improve our lineup

but I think it would be a marginal improvement and we’d have to give up too much to get him. Plus, we already have lots of young, cost controlled outfielders. I vote no. If we are going to pony up and get some pop, gimme Dan Uggla. Or go the cheaper route and get Orlando Hudson.

Sounds good...but you can't just go out and pluck 2B off contending teams rosters

I don't think the Cards brass are in a "win now" mindset

to make any major move to help this team to be honest. I think they are happy that we are contending because it will help sell more tickets in August & September but that’s about it. I honestly believe that they are content with the 06 world series win and anything that happens this year or next is just icing on the cake. They are still in the “re-buiding mode” and are trying to play out the big contact players that will leave after the season like Izzy & Mulder and not add another big contract to the fold right now. I really doubt we are going to get a “impact hitter or starter” this season. They may get a guy for the bullpen but that will be about it. I think they are saving their money right now because they know they will have to give Pujols a “mega buck lifetime contract” in a couple of years and are going to go with cheaper in house players right now to make it work for the next couple of years so they can give Albert what he wants and deserves when it comes time.

do something to help thus team is on the table, as long as it does mean any reduced capability in 09 or 10.
i hope he sticks to that

playoffs

If 2006 taught us anything, any cardinals team that makes the playoffs has a chance to win it all. Just need to heat up at the right time.

good point

but this yr the cubbies are a lot better. so alittle tinkering may help.. even in 06 they added not huge names but guys that helped. Belly,Weava, and Pdub

Larry Walker

Larry Walker was a salary dump. He had to pass through waivers if my memory stands true. It was after the July 31st deadline. So you have to find a player that is not worth anywhere near his current contract but still would provide a boost.

by FlimtotheFlam on Jul 5, 2008 4:49 PM EDT reply actions

ya he did pass through waivers

what are some possile names this yr? We may have to wait until after the 31st to see who those guys are, I was just trying to get people to maybe suggest names.

Fuentes or Uggla

If Mozeliak were to make a deal, I think these would be the two guys to go for. However, Uggla is a true beast and I doubt the Marlins would take any deal that isn’t a steal. Fuentes plays for Dan O’Dowd’s Rockies, and O’Dowd is also relatively shrewd. I’d imagine he’d take a little more than he’s worth too.

As for anyone else, I personally feel the outfield will be productive enough over the next few years that trading for Holliday will not be worth the return. Finally, as much as I like Sabathia, he’s not worth the exodus of talent he’d require. He’d either be a rental, which I think is a waste quite frankly (esp. if Garcia or Rasmus is part of the deal), or a huge financial commitment to a pitcher who weighs nearly 300 pounds and relies on powerful, athletic movements to pitch.

Other teams will realize the Cards are buyers, and know they are in the position of strength if the Cards come talking. I don’t think any deal involving Rasums, Garcia, Ankiel, or Ludwick is a good deal to be making right now.

the guy I think of

to fit your Larry Walker schemata… is Omar Vizquel. (I hear laughter) I know he is 40 or 41, but he is probably in better playing shape than Walker was when he came to us.
And what do we need? Not a classy right-fielder with some pop. Not this time. We need a savvy veteran to anchor the infield.
My second choice (again staying in the Walker vein) is our old friend Placido Polanco.
Choice 3… the oft-mentioned Greg Maddux.

by the Tewk on Jul 5, 2008 11:59 PM EDT reply actions

polanco might just fit the bill

grudz has been mentioned a bit, and he might be better AND cheaper, since the Tigers aren’t out of it yet. Grudz is playing for a contract next year as well. he’d be a type B free agent, and will still be owed almost $2M after the deadline, so I’d bet we could get him for someone like Freese.

Vizquel

He’s posting an OPS+ of 12 so far this year in 41 games. Ouch. I’m not sure what kind of playing shape you’d call that!

by jdub176 on Jul 6, 2008 2:42 AM EDT up reply actions

we already have a savvy defender anchoring the infield...

his name is Izturis and he is about the only SS in the league hitting better than vizquel. no thanks. I totally dig polanco (problem is the tigers are creeping back into the race) and Maddux (who pitched their way out of the rotation? Pineiro .. i guess?) I think Grudz makes a lot of sense then we can DFA our Kennedy away.

savviness

I wouldn’t call Vizquel a savvy defender anymore. At this point, I’d even venture to say that he’s in the bottom half of the league in terms of defensive prowess.

by jdub176 on Jul 6, 2008 1:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Not that he is on "the trading block"

but since you brought up Larry Walker, then Brad Hawpe can probably be had for Jaime Garcia, Anthony Reyes, Jon Jay, and a low-level prospect. Just conjecturizing here. Haven’t heard any rumors to this effect.
