I find it odd that home teams like the Cubs/Red Sox ect.

get huge home field umpire calls…but we get none.

Hope the offense wakes up tomorrow.

With it being game 1 of 3

Tony didn’t want to get the umps pissed off for the rest of the series…I bet. I just think it’s unfair that when teams like the Cubs are playing at home they get calls like that in their favor…but not us. The Red Sox got the same treatment….the umps were giving them a bunch of gifts when we played them.

And that's what he should say

You lost the game either way. Light a fire under the players to make the next game definitive enough that the umps are irrelevant.

All the Cubs fans at Busch pissed me off more than the umps

It amazes me how many Cubs fans can get tickets to these games in St. Louis.

by KYCards on Jul 4, 2008 11:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, it goes both ways

That’s knd of the fun of having a rivalry between cities this close. It’s downright embarassing how many cardinals fans show up at Minute Maid when the Astros are bad. (on the same topic, it was equally bad for a Red Sox-Astros game that I went to this month)

bashing the umps gets you no where

but it sure has hell makes me feel better

the first question he was asked about the ump, he replied “no comment”

so with that no comment, he pretty much said all that he needed to say

rockies win, 18-17, on a blown save by gregg

base hit with the bases loaded, following 3 singles and an error. Wow.

And only 2 errors in a game in which 35 runs were scored- that is amazing.

That's good for us

The Marlins are a SERIOUS threat for the wild card.

by KYCards on Jul 5, 2008 12:31 AM EDT up reply actions

Agree

Last night I said the Brewers needed more than Sabitha to get into the playoffs. But I am having serious doubts that we are going to play as good as we did the first half of the season and we will be real lucky to get the wild card over the Brewers. These next two games will be a real telling sign of what “we have”. To be honest I felt we didn’t play with much fire tonight against the Cubs AT HOME in our first big series of the season. They didn’t make Zambrano work at all and that was a real let down….at least for me. Plus I don’t think management is real serious about trying to “win it” this year. They are hoping we play like we did the first half and are going to stick with the guys we have and not make any major moves. I could be wrong…but it’s just the feeling I have.

by KYCards on Jul 5, 2008 1:42 AM EDT up reply actions

Zambrano

I’ll give the man his due…he is a dominate pitcher…BUT why can’t the Cards ever seem to beat him? Zambrano is 8-0 against Cards in last 11 starts and the Cards use the same approach every time they face him. Go up and swing at anything they see. I would REALLY hope when we face him in August they have a different approach next time and make him WORK. Other teams can do it against him why not us?!!?

PLUS the man was on a strict pitch count and we still went up there swinging early and letting him get easy innings and get through 6 six innings easy.
We can bitch about the umps..and rightfully so…but the Cards didn’t help themselves tonight before it even got to the bottom of the 9th with the umprire shanigans.

by KYCards on Jul 5, 2008 12:13 AM EDT reply actions

Sweet mother of mercy

I just watched the 9th inning (sorry, had to go watch the fireworks) and that was just plain awful. Where the heck was LaRussa? Couldn’t he be bothered to go out and get run? He did stick up for his player a day after he buried a former player in the papers. Stay Classy, Tone.

I missed the game today

had too many other festivities and could only follow the game on my cell phone.

Was the umpiring pro-cub the entire game? Or did Zambrano just flat out beat us?

Good to see Looper with a fantastic outing against the best offense in the NL

Good to see APu get #300

boo cubs, hooray beer

by Raconteur on Jul 5, 2008 1:36 AM EDT reply actions

Well...

the umpiring wasn’t really too bad until the 9th when he gave Wood a “hometown strike zone” even though we was pitching for the road team. I thought we was squeezing Looper at times, especially right before Soto hit his HR. As for Zambrano…he had good stuff but the Cards didn’t make him work at all and they swung at first pitches and didn’t make him throw a lot even knowing he had strict pitch count. Big mistake.
I didn’t think the Cards played with much fire tonight in what was the start of their first real big series of the season. Let’s hope the bad umpiring in the 9th will light a flame under their asses and they come out tomorrow ready to score some runs and win the next two games this weekend.

by KYCards on Jul 5, 2008 2:11 AM EDT up reply actions

Quote from Albert...

“He’s probably one of the toughest guys that we face in our division or our league,” first baseman Albert Pujols said of Zambrano. “Obviously, he’s got our number. There’s nothing to hide.”

This is true…but it’s getting to the point where they are just giving up when they have to face Zambrano. Other teams have got to him before..there is no reason why Albert & the boys can’t change their approach with him and pound him at some point. I really think they are intimidated by Big Z…I really wish this would change. No pitcher is unbeatable…they really need to make him work. Z looses his temper real easy and can get wild after he looses it or if his pitch count gets up….they should focus on this. They just seem to lose all plate discipline when they face him.
