I gotta say

this lineup TLR put together is fantastic. It’s like ‘hey, let’s only use the guys I trust in an important game!”

Pitcher
Kennedy
Skippy
Miles

should never exist as a patch in the lineup.

by Hardcore Legend on Jul 4, 2008 9:25 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

what exactly would you recommend than???

Skip and Miles may not be long term solutions at their respective positions, but they are both having fine seasons. other than replacing Ryan for Kennedy there isn’t much else you could’ve changed there

I hear ryan ludwick is available

And brendan ryan, who might have seen more than 4 pitches in 2 PA’s vs the opposing team’s ace while making at least 2 plays at SS that miles didn’t.

and those two plays

didn’t amount to any runs, but they are probably the difference between looper pitching 6 and 7 innings.

well, looper went 7

so there goes that theory

so make it the diff between 7 and 8

or the difference between 7@ 110 pitches or 7@120.

kind of reaching aren't you?

you can bitch about putting miles at short but its really an argument about playing ryan vs. kennedy

Why?

The difference between miles and kennedy offensively this year, by base runs, is 5.2 runs. That’s half a game and includes time wasted by miles at SS and doesn’t take into account that miles has had 5% more PA’s. BR’s are a counting stat.

Defensively, using RZR, Miles has been so bad that he doesn’t even appear on the list any more. You have to remove all qualified 2B’s to even get his awful .785 RZR to show up in the top 50 defensive 2B’s in the NL. If Miles had gotten all of kennedy’s opportunities this year, plus his own, plus ryan’s, at least 18.6 plays would not have been made that would have been made if all those opps were given to kennedy, or 12.85 if Ryan was at 2B. That is about 9 runs on defense (6.4 for Ryan)—and this doesn’t even look at OOZ plays, where miles sucks. When defense is considered, Miles is at best equivalent to kennedy at second and possibly significantly worse. And since he’s almost certainly not going to finish the season with offensive numbers as good as what he has (if he does, it’ll be because he’s been very lucky) by the end of the season kennedy’s overall numbers, as awful as they are, will be better than Miles.

Ryan should start at SS and Kennedy should start at 2B, especially against RHP. And that is every damned game. And especially games that are likely to be close ones like this one. it didn’t hurt us today, except maybe forcing the BP to do an extra inning, but that was by the grace of the GOB.

by SleepyCA on Jul 4, 2008 11:25 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

except maybe

MAYBE, against tough lefties, miles should start at second. But in that case it should be Ryan and Izturis.

"If thats bad luck, lets DFA our luck away." -DriverZN

by SleepyCA on Jul 4, 2008 11:26 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

again though,

the only reason miles ever plays ss is if kennedy is at 2B so that part is really a ryan vs. kennedy argument. Maybe if you could DH for Izturis, Kennedy or Ryan you’d have a point. But give me someone who can hit good and fields ok any day over someone who can field good and hits poorly. The only 2 middle infielders in the N.L. who have a lower OPS (with at least 150 PA) than Ryan and Izturis are Omar Vizquel and Freddy Sanchez. Kennedy is 6th lowest with Eric Bruntlett right under him.

by The Ghost of Todd Burns on Jul 5, 2008 4:21 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

also...

your point seems to be that defensively there would be a 19 hit and 9 run difference. Did you bother to look up what the offensive difference would have been if you gave miles, Kennedy and Ryan’s 59 starts? It would be significantly more than 19 hits and 9 runs

"Ding-dong the wicked witch is dead!" - Wayne Hagin after the cardinals snapped a losing streak

by The Ghost of Todd Burns on Jul 5, 2008 4:29 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

arguments such as these are bullshit anyway....

since its impossible to predict what plays Miles would make and which ones he wouldn’t. Maybe he’s positioned differantly…maybe he gets a better jump than normal. You can’t use stats to determine the likelihood of a player making a play.

you’re going to knock miles with his hitting streak and his .320 avg (and his career .320 avg vs. zambrano)?

miles should be in the lineup...if you wanna debate ludwick vs. duncan thats fine..

you can also debate ryan vs. kennedy…but miles and skip should both be in the lineup

"Ding-dong the wicked witch is dead!" - Wayne Hagin after the cardinals snapped a losing streak

by The Ghost of Todd Burns on Jul 4, 2008 10:16 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

...untill there are better options on the active roster...

I think its high time people quit bitching about skip and miles being in the lineup. They are both hitting over .300 and are far better than the alternatives (duncan, barton, kennedy, and ryan). I’m not a huge fan of either, and as a stated earlier, neither are long term solutions, but good lord they can’t possibly perform any better offensively than what they have.

at least

if we have to lose, we lost a close one with Zambrano pitching, and Benedict Edmonds went 0-4 with 3 Ks. So, no fun, but not exactly a crushing defeat….

Hopefully we’ll continue the lose-the-first-game-and-win-the-series pattern we’ve seen a bunch of times this year….
