do you think we could get brett Farve for Kyle Lohse?

I really don’t have much to add expect that I’d agree with HCL. I’d be upset if pittsburgh trades Snell to the Mets and we didn’t make a play on him.

For Lohse, I think we should go after Freddy Krueger

Anyone think Mo isn't getting anything done because he is a rookie GM

and other GMs know this and are asking too much for players because of this thinking he will make a “rookie mistake”?

Seeing the Yankees get players for basically nothing shows that you don’t have to sell the farm. I admit I will be a little upset if we do nothing to help the bullpen or maybe get ANY SS to help this team that is currently tied for the wild card with two months to play. I know we can get a few pieces without having to trade the farm.

by Evilfrog on Jul 31, 2008 1:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Must be nice to be over-valuing stuff

Think there alot of teams would stand pat if they were tied for the wild card right now with a couple of holes to fix. Look I’m not saying we should trade Rasmus & Garcia but doing nothing to help this bullpen when we are in the thick of the playoff hunt with no guarantee we wil be in this position next year or in 2010 is pretty gutsy since they are charging the loyal fans some of the highest ticket prices in baseball. So I guess because we won the WS in 2006, there’s no need to try and get into the playoffs for a few more years…..nah…we should be nice and lets the Cubs have their turn I guess.

by KYCards on Jul 31, 2008 2:09 PM EDT up reply actions

eh

on your point that there is no guarantee we will be in it the next 2 years…we probably will. pitt isn’t getting any better..cincy might…and the cubs and brewers are mortaging their future with all the moves they are making and it will probably take them a while to turn it back around. we are about the only ones who look like we are in a position to compete today and in the long run.

by lopey986 on Jul 31, 2008 2:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Cubs really aren't mortgaging their future all that much

they have a pretty young core, and a ton of money. There are no guarantees, but I’d expect them to be good for at least the next two or three years.

They say that it's never too late, but you don't get any younger...

actually...

The Cubs may have sold what was left of thier shallow farm system off this year. But they do have Zambrano for a few years. And if he is healthy you can’t count them out completely.

well, none of their star players are geezers quite yet

and they have that james edwards kid, i hear he’s had some success with them this year. i had never heard of him before.
but it would be great if all four of those guys started getting old at exactly the same time.

by mattybobo on Jul 31, 2008 2:26 PM EDT up reply actions

And

Zambrano – 27
Harden – 26
Marmol – 25
Soto – 25

Those guys are definite “core” guys. All but Harden are signed beyond 2009, too.

The Cubs look to to be good for a whlie.

by Hal Lanier's Pants on Jul 31, 2008 2:41 PM EDT up reply actions

marmol?

he is far from a definite core guy. sure, you can try to build your bullpen around him, but dude has been imploding over the last 2 months.

by lopey986 on Jul 31, 2008 2:44 PM EDT up reply actions

He's always had control issues though

I agree, he’s been overused, but with the rest of that bullpen, it’s sorta warrented.

But, I do question his ability to be a legit closer. He has always had stints of complete wildness.

by Tackle Box on Jul 31, 2008 3:26 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree with Zambrano and Harden but Marmol has major control issues and Soto was a below average prospect that got hot for a year. He has returned to reality.

Cubs will be a contender next season

and they will be getting new ownership next year too…maybe even Mark Cuban who will spend even more money on the team. The Cubs will be contenders for a few more years…it would be a mistake to think they are going to be a celler dweller in the next year. The NL Central won’t be a cakewalk for us next year. and maybe even in 2010.

by tbell61 on Jul 31, 2008 2:18 PM EDT up reply actions

No, it doesn;t

not in baseball because you have to get 75% of the owners to agree, I believe.

I’d put my money on Hank Aaron’s group getting the rights.

by Hardcore Legend on Jul 31, 2008 2:22 PM EDT up reply actions

You could be right...but I still have a feeling that Cuban will win out

because he is going to up the offer above everybody that’s bidding. And I think he will somehow get a little over 75% of the owners to agree…it will be interesting for sure.

by KYCards on Jul 31, 2008 2:26 PM EDT up reply actions

He's got the biggest offer

and he’s threatening a lawsuit. There’s more and more who think the owners will comply with him since the lawsuit would bring the whole thing that exempts them from being a monolopy (I’m drawing a blank on what that’s called at the moment).

by Yellow Dog on Jul 31, 2008 2:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Rumors are part of the negotiation system

and these reporters know they play a central role in the process. Sometimes a GM would like to do a deal that has not even been proposed, so it gets leaked to gauge the other team’s interest.

I think these guys have valid sources, but that their sources are just playing them to their advantage. Because Olney et al. get the attention they are more than happy to comply and leak stuff, which in turn gets all the fans excited, which is good for baseball.

I don’t see any problem with it, but I did like the way Jocketty operated outside this arena.

Just let me know when the deals are done. Any speculation before that is just that, speculation, and I don’t waste my time considering it.

Rather take the draft picks

You here GM’s say they are getting bad offers and rather take the picks. What are the odds that a First Rounder becomes a MLB caliber player? It seems like it would be a lot smarter to trade for someone who was at least closer to being MLB than any new draftee next year

by FlimtotheFlam on Jul 31, 2008 2:31 PM EDT reply actions

It's about 50% or so that a first rounder makes the majors and sticks

probably a little higher than that, but not all that much. They’ve probably gotten better at projecting those guys in the last few years, but we won’t have a real answer on that until five or six years from now.

it depends on which team is doing the picking, but most of the outstanding players in the bigs were either 1st, supp, or 2nd round picks. Unless, of course, they were international free agents.

by giveml on Jul 31, 2008 4:08 PM EDT up reply actions

But even there, there are a bunch of notable exceptions,

And I would also say that it seems like 2nd rounders make the majors at almost the same rate that first rounders do, and you have a bunch of HoF-caliber guys getting drafted in the second round or lower. Drafting is an art more than it is a science, I think.

shouldn't this be a good thing?

i mean, it makes more sense to me that we’d want the cubs to sweep the brewers and give us a better chance to catch them rather than the two teams to “tread water” against each other and still be ahead of us. is that logical? i know it’s tough to wish the cubs success, but that’s how i’ve seen this series.

by Tackle Box on Jul 31, 2008 3:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, if they had treaded water, then we'd be fewer games back of the lead

if the brewers swept, it would be virtually a three way tie for the division lead right now. I think the logical thing when this sort of thing happens is to cheer for the team farther down in the standings.

With most rotations

Niemann somehow got really underrated in here. Low to mid 90s still from a 6’9 dude throwing over the top and over a K per inning for his career in the minors with good BB/HR rates.

and that's what they got

for the face of the franchise, a guy with 35HR power signed to an affordable deal this year and next?

I just don’t see this helping the pirates, really. I guess brignac is young and playing at a high level, but he’s got a .733 OPS with a .304 OBP at AAA and had a .760 last year at AA. I guess it’s better than Wilson, but not that much.

Guess I may be under-rating Niemann.

Apparently not

MLB.com is backtracking:

However, it could be a little more complicated than that. According to another industry source in Pittsburgh, the Rays still are not believed to be offering both Brignac and Niemann. One, it is not known which, is deemed unavailable, along with Wade Davis, David Price and Jeremy Hellickson. A third baseball source also confirmed that no deal sending Bay to Tampa Bay is done as of 15 minutes prior to the deadline.

To me the trade deadline just comes down to egos

The cardinals, like many other teams, are so confident that they are sitting on a gold mine in the minors that we are unwilling to give up what other people want.

The teams that are/should be sellers don’t want to dump any of the players that they have money tied up in because they feel if the team trading with them is willing to give up “prospects” then they must not be all that special anyways. These teams usually end up holding on to there “big name” players untill the offseason and just take what ever picks they get in exchange. They feel their scouting is better than anyone elses and they can get what they need for the future out of the draft.

It seems like a merry-go-round that never stops to let anyone on or off.

gonna need more franklins to get through this one.

They got a pile of talent down there, much of which is excess anyway, they are finally in contention and probably only a piece or two away from at least a wild-card … and ownership does nothing.

Got to be frustrating to be a Rays fan. I like their grow your own talent system, but it is like they need a perfect storm of kids playing well just to compete. The perfect storm finally happens and they are going to let it peter out.

Villone is pitching just fine versus lefties

And, with McClellan, if TLR will use him against LHB, there really isn’t a desperate need for another LOOGY. It just would’ve been nice to free up TLR’s bullpen maneuverings. Plus, one could still be had post-waiver.

Boras was a target

He hasn’t been the one setting the Market anyway. Turner and Greenberg did that. His client list this off season puts him on everyones guest list. With the change of regimes in Washington, the owners are going to be at a disadvantage using last years tactics which netted them allot of money….....so far. If they let Cuban in, inflation will be off the charts. Lohse probably pitches 500 from here on out which puts him at 18 and 9.
They will continue to pitch him against Number one when every possible. The PR machine will now start grinding against him which began today. His chance of getting 2 runs tomorrow is poor. He is a slight underdog at home in offshore betting. One plus is, he will be pissed. He will get a 4yr deal between 40 and 50 because of his health.

And what's more

Even if it does work out for Boras, and Lohse, and they land a 4 year 50 million deal (Or something in that range) then more power to them. If someone else wants to take that chance, then that is fine. I don’t want the Cardinals investing 4+ years in pitchers, period.

I’m pleased we have him this year for a great price, but not really wanting the team to tie it’s longterm future to him.

by Merry CRasmus on Jul 31, 2008 6:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Huh

2 years ago Barry Zito got 127 million. Barry Zito. His guy made out like bandits in the ‘07 draft. Porcello got more NPV than Price out of the draft. Wieters got the 2nd (now 3rd) highest straight bonus ever. Brackman needed Tommy John: 4.5. Arrieta 7 figures etc. One player means his methods have stopped working? God knows what Bavasi was thinking giving Silva 48 million but I’d bet Lohse would rather be where he is as it turns out.

The Jeff Weaver reference never has and never will fly. He’s a career 93 ERA+ who is no longer a major league pitcher. 70 ERA+ last year, 78 the year before. Good for him (and us!) that he had 5 good games in October, but he is/was a bad pitcher by the time contracts came into play. His career earnings are ~40 million.

Lohse got butchered last year, but I’ll bet you a hypothetical internet dollar that has actually worked out in his favor…....

And please no one bring up the largest contract in history on straight dollars AND is mid-loaded.

joker, everything you're bringing up happened pre- AROD

remember last winter how boras was going to get A-rod a $300m contract? that totally blew up in his face — very high profile humiliation by his #1 client. look what happened after that -- he was gonna get Andruw Jones a $90m deal; he only got him $36m. he was gonna get $40m for lohse . . . . had to beg for $4.5m.

i think the guy overreached one time too many, and his mystique has been punctured. he’s just another agent now, but he doesn’t realize it yet.

by lboros on Jul 31, 2008 6:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Awww I said not to bring up that contract
1. He did get A-Rod 300 million in terms of value. A backloaded 300 million dollar deal has the identical NPV as the one he got; it’s probably not a coincidence. And again a 31 year old got a 10 year deal. The clamor that that contract was undervalued is hilarious. It’s mid-loaded! Now I’m talking in fragments. From a PR perspective it was a nightmare, in reality, as any GM or someone who looks at that deal carefully would know, it was an amazing deal. 2. Come on, he throws out outrageous numbers for everyone. Johnny Damon was gonna get 90 million or whatever. Jones was coming off of .222 .311 .413. 36 million wasn’t a good deal??? 3. Lohse got butchered no doubt, I said that. It’s worked out for Lohse, but that was bad. But one player punctures his mystique among GMs? Are there going to be Darren Dreiforts, Chan Ho Park outrageousness? Probably not. That type of borderline ‘did he drug that GM?’ is dead. You don’t lose “it” over one guy.

I guess we’ll see what all happens with the draft by the 15th as that will be a strong indicator, but I’ll nearly guarantee that he’s no longer “just another agent”.

when the "one player" is A-Rod

yeah, that means a lot. A-Rod very publicly told boras “Shut up, you’re misrepresenting me.” gms have long complained that boras uses disinformation to get his way; now they have something a little more concrete to go on.

to cycle back to zito for a second — that deal was totally in keeping w/ the market at the time. jason schmidt got the same $$$ per annum, albeit for fewer years — but he was 34 years old, while zito was 28. zito was an ace pitcher in his prime coming off an all-star season, with no health issues to speak of. the game was awash in money because of a one-time windfall (tv contract, i think), and there were a lot of ludicrous contracts handed out. jeff suppan got $45m that same off-season; adam eaton got $25m, jason marquis got $21m, for god’s sake. the zito deal didn’t beat the market imho.

boras will probably get lohse a nice deal, $40m to $50m. but any half-decent agent could do that; it doesn’t take any special talent. that’s why i say he’s just another agent. and boras won’t necessarily place lohse with a team where his career is likeliest to prosper. for an extra $1m a year he’ll yoke lohse to a crappy organization like the orioles or the rangers.

by lboros on Jul 31, 2008 6:43 PM EDT up reply actions

still ruminating on this

jones’ deal was well below market. look at what other centerfielders were making. juan pierre got a $36m deal, f’crying out loud. gary matthews got $50m. aaron rowand got $60m. and torii hunter did get the $90m that jones sought, for the same annual avg salary.

yeah jones was coming off a bad year, but he still signed for below market. everybody said so at the time.

by lboros on Jul 31, 2008 7:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Missed this

Maybe Jones wanted to go to a contender? Even if it was the best possible deal then we’re making conjecture that Boras has lost his edge off of one of the worst major league starters in ‘07 getting 36 million? Boras didn’t get to where he was (is) by not making adjustments and I think you are totally overreacting to the A-Rod media stupidity.

And again

A-Rod managed to only get the NPV of a standard 300 million dollar deal. He’s not the one player I’m referring to, Lohse is.

From a PR perspective it was a nightmare, in reality, as any GM or someone who looks at that deal carefully would know, it was an amazing deal.

The fact that the Yankees paid waaaay more than anyone was even rumored to be in the running for doesn’t say something? GMs don’t get their info from ESPN…

Regarding Zito, he wasn’t remotely an ace pitcher in his prime. He was a pitcher in clear decline, velocity and otherwise, who still happened to be 28. His final year was supported on a frame of smoke with a 78% LOB. Any GM would have known that and almost every Giants fan absolutely despised the deal. Jason Schmidt was a dramatically better pitcher, and you are completely ignoring that the risk on Schmidt was dramatically less because it was just 3 years. Hell Schmidt has blown out his arm and I bet the Giants would trade Zito for him straight up. But cmpletely non-comparable and even then the Schmidt deal at the time wasn’t remotely as despised as the Zito deal.

Lohse, whatever we’ll see that still doesn’t really matter that much. 90% of that is market correction against the mid level guys in the non-Bavasi led organizations. More relevant is will he get Alvarez the massive deal? Hosmer? Fields? Cole? Plus call me back when the Manny/Varitek/Teixeira, then Holliday, then Fielder hit free agency.

Honestly, I like the team we have now. Sure, our closer is toast and we get almost no production from the MI but some of you act like you expect to get real help there for peanuts. Other than Rasmus the rest of the league doesn’t really value our prospects and we would have given up too much for any impact reliever. I think old Uncle Walt spoiled us all from 1997-2004, honestly.

Plus, our bullpen would be far better if it were configured properly. Give me Izzy/Franklin/Springer/McClellan/Thompson/Perez/Villone and use it properly. Give Worrell a shot if one of them doesn’t produce, and if Izzy goes down again, give the ball to Perez in the 9th. It shouldn’t be this difficult! We have the makings of a good bullpen; it just isn’t being used that way.

I’m fine with today’s “do nothing” approach. Well, better than fine.

We don’t have a stock pile in the minors worth a shit like most would like you to believe so 90% of the mediocre players out there that’s been mentioned would have cost us something with actual value.

I guess I’d rather ride a team that is sitting just out of the WC and sniffing the division than I would want to start hammering on ‘09/’10.

We were picked to be last, we’re still a surprise… not to just MSM, but within ourselves.

Personally, I’d rather ride the wave of mediocrity with the players on the payroll than to trade prospects for even more of them.

I don’t recall any trade talked about that had the likes of Freese or Robinson involved, do you?

no, most of the talks or “rumors” involved either our highest projected pitching prospects or ML ready (if not in the ML already) position players.

We have several opportunity cost players in the minors (Freese with Wallace projected after Glaus is gone, a few average OF that may not come up long term – Robinson, Stav, Jay) if we sign and run with Rick and Luddy and Razza comes up. Anderson blocked by Molina and defensive work this year by LaRue.

Just because players are blocked on opportunity costs doesn’t mean it’s a stockpile. If it was a stockpile than other teams would see value and it’s came across as they haven’t.

I honestly don’t know if Freese’s or Robinson’s name came up. I doubt that the only names that came up were those mentioned on the internet. Just because they aren’t “big” names in the minors doesn’t mean that they weren’t being asked about.

I just guess I don’t understand what you are trying to say. I almost read it as if you don’t think Anderson is a prospect because he is blocked? I think the ambiguity of that last paragraph is throwing me in regard to the rest of your comment.

Sorry. I think it’s being misread, or seems to be.

The stockpile isn’t worth a shit, not the players therein. We have 7-8 true high ceiling guys who would be (barring injury) near automatics to being in the ML at some point in their career. Not 17-18 like most seem to think.

Unloading one or two out of 7-8 of those prospects for some bullpen help, to me, would be detrimental to ‘09/’10. A hell of a lot of difference to unloading 1 or 2 out of 17-18 guys.

That’s where I’m headed.

And I thought that could happen without giving too much. But most in the outside world seem to think that the farm club is around the middle of the pack. The organization, and us as fans (for the most part), seem to think it is better than the layperson gives it credit for. When you have divergent opinions like that, it is not an environment for making moves. Only time will tell who is right and who’s wrong, but that’s not really the point today. The point is that it’s easy to see why there were no blockbusters, and personally I can support not making a big move this year.

But c’mon, couldn’t we have dealt a mid level guy for a Ohman, Mahay type? I think we could have stood to take a little long term “loss” to patch what is a big hole for this ballclub.

Oh I don't think leadership has much to do with polls

A fair number of those people don’t know anything about baseball. But the fact is that the team has to answer to the fanbase ultimately. They misread the situation, I think. I hope they have a game plan to keep Tony happy…or at least the telephone numbers of some good managers and a pitching coach.

"the team has to answer to the fanbase ultimately"

Explain what you mean by this. Because, really, unless you think people are going to stop coming to games because Mo didn’t do a deadline deal for a reliever, I don’t really get what you’re suggesting.

I'm sure

that most of those votes were cast by all the great minds at Card’s Talk and Bernie’s Pressbox. If our G.M. is listening to those idiots, we are definitely in trouble.

Does Ankiel have a clause in his contract

that forbids him from going on the DL? If this one lingers as long as the last one I would hope they would DL him and try bringing up one of those infielders down in Memphis

That's been on my mind too

Glad you brought it up. This is his third stint that lasted around one week on the active roster? Is that right?

the only thing I can figure out

is they don’t want to DL him , just in case, because the team has no depth in the OF

The BIG picture

It would be an understatement to say I’m disappointed the Cards didn’t make a move today. Granted they could make a move with waivers, but only Mo can make that happen. Looking over the possibilities, Ohman made the most sense to me, as the lefty we needed. Two weeks ago, White Sox GM Kenny Williams was quoted on MLBTR saying, "The environment to make trades was awful." From the events that transpired, or didn’t transpire, that may have been proven true. Were the Cards a little "gun shy" or were possible suitors skeptical of the talent we offered in return?

Another question is, were the Cardinals playing to win it ALL this year? Since mid February, the Cardinals organization and media said this was a rebuilding year and an opportunity to "develop talent from within." This would certainly explain some of the "desperate" moves made by Milwaukee and that nameless team in Chicago (in order to win it ALL now). As long as the "north side" hits the century mark in years without a WS title, my friends, all will be right in the universe. Today, I want emphasize the words of Marty Brennaman, (from a few years back) reminded that Cardinals fans will always have a reason to smile with pride. Forever 10 WS Championships with 17 NL titles, forever the class of the National League; GO CARDS!!
