good start for carp
how does carpenter's good start tonight effect the card's trade strategy? that is, providing there IS a trade strategy. i'm thinking that if izzy blows another inning, we could see wellemeyer or looper in the ninth. though my vote might go for mcclellan. and that is only until they decide what to do with wainwright. in the meantime, does the team's interest now focus on a hitter? i think the main question surrounds waino. unfortunately, that may remain a mystery until after the trade deadline. right now, i'm thnking they should get a lefty reliever and wait until september for reinforcements.

Carpenter = Sabathia/Harden
The acquistion or should I say reinstatement of Chris Carpenter to the rotation at 85-90% equally offsets the addition of Sabathia or Harden by each of our two rivals. We must focus on getting a bat. Assuming Wainwright is able to come back and be 85-90% of what he was as a starter this year we have two front line guys that can carry our rotation through the post season with a 3 man rotation of Carpenter Wainwright and Lohse. The need still remains for an impact bat. The streakiness of Ankiel Glaus and Ludwick is simply not consistent enough. I would go so far as to say the only consistent protection for Albert Pujols could actually be Yadier Molina. It makes me eat my lunch to make such a statement but given the fact that he is the toughest man to strike out in baseball and is hitting above .300 he is more consistent than any other option we have.
With that said I hope I have emphasized the need we have for an impact bat ie. Matt Holliday. We NEED this person to provide some consistency in our lineup. Sadly I think the real answer could be lying one phone call away…Barry Bonds.

If we were an AL team, it would make sense.
But unless Bonds has been working out more and dropped a few pounds, he’s in his mid40’s and plays like a plant in LF.

I'd rather move Pineiro to the bullpen if we need to move a starter
Looper and Welley have sucked less than he has

Piniero
doesn’t really solve the bullpen issues though, since he’s similar to Brad Thompson in that he gets ground ball outs when he’s on, but can get raked all over the ballpark when he’s not, and he doesn’t miss bats much. At least Looper can dial it up and get some strikeouts when coming in from the bullpen. Some guys just aren’t cut out for the bullpen, and if his 1st half with Boston last year is any indication, he’s one of those guys.
I’m one for leaving the bullpen alone and pulling up Perez, Worrell, and Motte when rosters expand in September to add depth. I don’t think you can move Wellemeyer out of the rotation right now, but he’d get my vote because he could pitch multiple innings when needed, and can miss bats.

But the problem is that I think Welley is a better bullpen arm
and Piñeiro is better able to eat innings, at least until Welley rediscovers his location.
