Go after Renteria!
For those of you that haven't heard, Pudge Rodriguez has been traded to the yankees. That makes a vacancy at catcher on the tigers. Also, I don't know if you have noticed but we are lacking offensively up the middle. They have renteria: a former beloved cardinal. Now I know renteria is NOT having a great year offensively, but I feel that if he were to come back to the Lou he would do much better. Now let's see, do we have any catching prospects that the tigers might be interested in? Oh, yeah, Brian Anderson. I know that it would probably take more than just Anderson to complete the deal, but I for one would be glad to see renteria back in red.

i think we already went the sentimental route with kennedy, edmonds, mulder and izzy. why do it again as none of these contracts have paid good dividends. as much as we all appreciate edgar for what he did, it’s about what will he do now. i say not enough.

and futher more judging from what detroit got for pudge i don't even think that we would have
to trade Anderson

Not interested.
Still some bad blood from how he left too, I’d imagine.

why would there be bad blood for him saying
he’d “rather play for a winning team” after we had just won the NLCS? I just don’t see where the bad blood would come from.
On with the (good) youth movement!

Huh?
It is pretty much common knowledge that management and the coaching staff weren’t happy that he’d take a few extra million, and leave STL. If I remember correctly, and this part is a little hazey, but it seems Renteria had some other comments that were less than grateful, given how well he was treated here.

I tend to miss that on this board for some reason.
I agree then. ;)

That isn't what he said
for one thing, he left after we played Boston in the World Series, not after we just made it to the NLCS. What he said was something like “Boston just wanted me more than the Cardinals did.” He based that on the fact that Boston offered $8 M more—hardly an unjustifiable conclusion. He was a little hurt the Cards didn’t try to meet or beat Boston’s offer and some Cards’ fans (maybe most) were upset that he seemed bitter toward the team. There were some hurt feelings but I doubt that there’s so much “bad blood” left over that a trade for him wouldn’t work. That was 4 years ago. It’s not like he totally crapped on Tony or anything.
I wouldn’t trade Anderson for him, but I don’t see any reason why either side would be totally opposed to a deal either.

what erks me most about all this now
is Walt said because Edgar went to bean town, the Cards were able to “afford” Mark Mulder’s salary.
just think about how different the last 4 years could have been without all the Mulder drama.

8 million?
I remember reading somewhere that it was $0.5 over the course of the contract.

Go get Him!!
Edgar loved playing in St. Louis and there was not a single person who was more clutch than him. 1997 game winning hit to win the World Series for the Marlins as well as countless times he came through with a little loop shot to right that us Cardinal fans came to love. I would be ecstatic if we could grab a player like Edgar Renteria for one more go around.

he is a great playoff clutch hitter
wouldn’t mind seeing him back. but I wouldn’t go out of my way to get him either

no thanks
i’m not giving up our top catching prospect for an aging SS who used to be awesome for us back in the day.
would i give up some no names prospects? sure. but not one of our best trading chips.

I think coming back to St. Louis & to the NL
is the best thing for Edgar right now. For some reason he just doesn’t play well in the AL. If we can get him back here I think Edgar will wake up and start to get hot. Of course he would be a MUCH more welcome sight in our batting order than Izturis. If we can get him for a couple of mid level prospects I would do it.

I'll borrow fangraphs'
trade analysis strategy to look over this trade suggestion. Fangraphs has been using the Marcel Quick-n-Dirty spreadsheet to predict how guys might rebound, regress, or stay the course. The results are the following line for the rest of the year: .283/.343/.402
Marcel is optimistic about Renteria’s ability to turn it around and cobble together a slash line slightly below league average. Baseball Prospectus says his fielding is quite good at 14 runs above replacement. Maybe for the rest of the year if he turns it around…like 1.5 wins above replacement.
Now, if you haven’t gandered lately, Baseball Prospectus has Izturis’ offense at -4 runs below the Mendoza line and his defense is only 6 runs above replacement. Iz2 is only giving us hiz2 runs over replacement.
Adding a hopefully rebounded Edgar would represent 1 or 2 more wins for the rest of the year, displacing Mr. Replacement (Izturis) and with a playoff race this close, those couple of wins would represent a significant improvement in our playoff odds given the close race.
Just one interesting point to mention, btw: whoever thought that Aaron Miles would be 3 offensive runs above average. And that’s league average. If you give him a weighted boost for his position, he represents a ridiculously nice value. At this point, and I hate to say it, having Miles at SS and Kennedy at 2B represent our WARPiest line-up.

I've been advocating the Miles/Kennedy combo
well, more like hinting at it, but everyone kept griping about how horrible a SS miles is, when he might actually be better playing there than at 2B

Felipe Lopez released...
Could this be an improvement over Izturis? And without giving up prospects even. What does everyone think?

Looking at B-R ...
looks to be basically the same player. He certainly isn’t adding any offense.
