3 team update
8:29pm: Here’s the latest. MLB.com says we’re moving closer to the three-team deal. The Pirates could receive a minor leaguer from the Red Sox. Dejan Kovacevic says the Pirates would receive four or more prospects for Bay, as well as Hermida. John Grabow could end up in Boston or Florida. Perrotto says it could be expanded to have Jed Lowrie go to Pittsburgh and Jack Wilson to Boston. The Bucs also like Red Sox prospect Hunter Jones.

his zone so far
is so hot and cold… he can hit stuff in on his hands, and especially up and away, but he can’t hit stuff that’s on the lower outside corner, or even down the middle. the down the middle part is probably just indicative of him trying to catch up with a major league fastball I’d guess.

his control was an issue
but his fastball was 91-93 on gameday. his last inning might actually have been his best, and some here were confused as to why he was lifted for a PH in the cards’ 5th. thought he could have gone another inning even on a strict pitch count – his count was in the mid-60s when he was pulled.

In 2001 Joe was the Central Region player of the year as well as being a high school All-American. Joe was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team in 2001. He was selected in the third round and was the one hundred fourth overall pick that year. Currently Joe is still in the Cardinals organization unmarried and available.

most high school coaches are teachers
they aren’t getting paid to coach.
atleast thats how my HS was.
boo cubs, hooray beer
yes they do.
take it from someone who is a teacher and a coach. I actually was with a rather poor high school last year and volunteered as an assistant varisty coach. We had a total of 4 paid coaches (1 head with 2 volunteer varisty, 1 sophmore, and 2 freshman A and B teams), but in our conference it was typical to see 6 or 7 paid baseball coaches per high school.
It’s called a stipend. Depends on whether its a head or assistant position and also depends on years. Usually ranges anywhere from 3 to 10 thousand dollars.
Btw, do you really think coaches would put in an extra 30 hours a week (and that’s a low estimate) and not get paid for their services? Especially considering the amount of shit they take from the community? If they weren’t paid, very few people would do it for more than a few years.
Ah, I didn't know that
I just assumed they didn’t get paid.
I do know some people who would coach even if they didn’t get paid. They just love the game and want to be around it. But in general, that makes sense, high school coaches do take a lot of shit with all the politics involved in high school sports (wah wah why isn’t my kid starting?)
boo cubs, hooray beer
it's partly the politics
but just consider the hours. Sure, some people might do it, but teachers actually have the schedule to do it.
Just to show you what we did this past year. All winter we had offseason workouts Tuesday and Thursday from 6am to 7:30. Then once the “season” started, we held practice from 5:15am to 7:45 Monday through Friday and then another 2 1/2 hours at some point on Saturday. Btw, we had to do it in the morning due to weather. When you’re in the Chicago suburbs and the snow doesn’t melt until the middle of April, you’ve got to be flexible.
Then once the games started, since we still had freezing issues and rain and stuff, we would practice at 5:15 in the morning and then possibly play a game that afternoon. We had to do it that way because we couldn’t take the chance of not playing or practicing for a series of days in a row. (btw, we practiced outside exactly 1 time before our first game and that was an abbreviated practice on our football field which has Field Turf and it was about 40 degrees) Oh, and the games start a 4:30 and usually take 2 to 2 1/2 hours to complete. Then if you’re at home, you have to dress the field (tarps, rake the field, etc), and then call in the stats to the newspapers. If you’re on the road, you’re driving the bus back to school. Either way, you’re getting out of there around 7 often later.
So, I get it when I hear people say they’d coach for free or whatever, but they often don’t know what goes in to it. Then, as you pointed out, you’ve got parents and players issues on top of all of that.

Overall
Yeah, especially if he feels good tomorrow. I think they rushed him back. A major league start has more intensity than a rehab start in the minors. To a guy like Carpenter, a game like tonight’s “counts,” unlike a game at AA or AAA. Some people here thought he was pulled prematurely, after 67 pitches, largely because the speculation before the game had him on a 75-80 pitch count. Plus his last inning (4th) was his best.
He wasn’t Cy Carp, but he threw some good pitches. If you look at a box score you’ll see he walked several guys, struck out one. Braves put a lot of runners on base but didn’t hit many balls hard. If he’s healthy tomorrow, it was a very good step forward.
Great to see him pitching again. I bet I was not alone in busting my rear to get home from work to see him throw his first pitch.

Carp's start was good
he had trouble locating the fastball, and a lot of trouble locating the curveball, but he showed his good old poise and intelligence, and pitched around jams, and certainly looked a lot more mlb ready than Boggs. I saw no signs that he won’t be himself again by the end of August.

they are doing against the Cubs at home? Yost looked like a deer in headlights throught most of the game tonight and most of this series. If I were the Brewers and was going all out to make the playoffs I would fire this guy after this Cubs series and get someone with playoff experience.

I know it won't happen...but I would find it funny.
But the Brewers would do themselves a favor by getting rid of that putz and getting someone with more experience of managing a team trying to make the playoffs. Not sure who they could get right now but Yost seems like the worst guy for this team right now. But hey I hope they keep him and they choke themselves right out of the race here in the next several weeks.
I was very surprised they didn't fire him earlier this season when they were underperforming
I still think a better manager would have the best record in MLB with the Brewers, but he’s done a better job since they were swept in Boston

Don’t have a clue what, but it seems like the Cards always do something.
With us winning 3 in a row and the Brewers loosing 3 to the Cubs
I think we are going to do something as well. And we should…we have somw big series coming up against the Cubs, Brewers, Phillies, Marlins… teams that are fighting for either the division or the wild card. We are STILL right in the thick of it. And yes he have some big holes…but we also might be only a player or two away from at least winning the wild card. It would make no sense to just give up and HOPE we are in this position in 2009 & 2010. With Carp coming back and maybe being an actual effective starter for us…my promises have gone up from a week ago. Now I don’t want to sell the farm…but from looking at some of these trades going on in baseball over the past couple of days…teams are not having to sell the farm to pick up a good player.
If we can get say Ohman, Renteria & maybe another bullpen arm
without having to trade away our big prospects I like our chances alot more. And I think we can pick some of these guys up without having to trade away the farm. But will Mo do it?

is absolutely MASHING right now. 6 homers in his last 3 games and his average is up in the 280’s. I’m somewhat surprised no one has come calling for him… he’d be a nice power bat off the bench. He wouldn’t bring a great return or anything most likely but I’m sure there’s someone out there who may want his services.

Well, it sounds like the big AL East clubs
have Ohman surrounded. He would be a terrific LOOGy, but he’s a rental. Who knows what the price is, but evidently we’ve dropped out of the bidding.
The Orioles front has been very quiet, though there were inside-the-organization rumors over a week ago that Brian Roberts was going to be a Cardinal—before George Sherrill’s name was tossed in the mix. My guess is this one is dead, as Angelos is too hard to deal with when there isn’t a deadline.
I suspect we’re going to try again on Burnett, regardless of Ricciardi’s statements or Scott Rolen’s shoulder. Dark horse candidate for major trade.
I’m glad the Bay thing disappeared, but I have to wonder if the fact that we hung around Pittsburgh so long means we are actually serious about Holliday, not just Fuentes. Based upon Strauss’s statements today (reminding everyone of the “nobody should be untradeable” comment by Luhnow), I think the chance of doing this deal is higher than it has been in the past week. Whether that’s a good thing or not, I don’t know.
If they land Holliday, I do hope they’ve got the plan mapped out to control payroll in the future. A Fort Knox-level re-signing of Pujols is coming in three years. Free agent pitchers are getting ridiculous money, and Dave Duncan needs a raise and some better raw material. On top of that, Rick Ankiel will be a free agent after next year. I assume Mo knows what he’s doing. But is the marginal benefit of having Holliday in left field really worth it?
I’m going to vote for signing Burnett with a waiver of the opt-out. Add any of the LOOGys on the market, and we can worry about a bat in the offseason.
JMHO.
P.S. I really hope Mo surprises us all with something out of left field, like Placido Polanco. Hey, why not?
If we miss out on Ohman
I hope it’s not because the Braves get starstruck by trading with the Yankees or Red Sox and get some low level prospect that just because they are in the Yankees or Red Sox farm system …they think they are gold. I know John Schuerholz wouldn’t get starstuck but I’m not sure about their new GM. I think they got kind of robbed on the Teixeria deal.
But Ohman is not worth a top prospect anyways so if other teams want to be foolish…let them.
Yeah, I hope it's smoke
Ohman’s opponent BA in close-and-late situations this year is .109. We can use that kind of manliness.

Just to ruin your day
I’d like to point out that if our bullpen wasn’t awful and had actually held a lead (or not given up insurance) in the 8th inning or later vs the Brewers in these games:
April 17th
May 9
May 11
July 21
July 22
July 24
the Brewers would be playing tomorrow vs the Cubs to avoid falling 11 games out of 1st place in the division.
Even if it were half of those, the Brewers would be thinking about being sellers at 8 games behind the Cubs and 7 games behind the Cardinals after tomorrow afternoon’s game.
How ridiculous is that? The only reason they are even still in this thing is because Jason Isringhausen, Ryan Franklin and Randy Flores aren’t very good.
by Hardcore Legend on Jul 31, 2008 3:36 AM EDT reply actions
It's also the only reason Yost is still employed.
I can’t help but think if we could somehow get one or two bullpen upgrades and maybe Renteria tomorrow…the wild card is ours for the taking. Maybe my hopes are too hight because we beat the Atlanta AAA team…but as long as Mo doesn’t do anything STUPID and Carp is really back we still have a good shot at October if he can just pick up a few pieces that won’t kill our future.
Those games aren't coming back
that’s the problem. We don’t get to make up those games from here on out, instead we are treated to Diamondbacks, Dodgers, Cubs for something like 20 of our final games left.
