Game 110 Open Thread- 30th July, 2008

Carpenter_chris_medium Jurrjens_jair_medium

Carpenter                Jurrjens

    0-0, 0.00               10-5, 3.02

A phoenix rising

A team refusing to die

And returns an ace

or

The wounded ace comes

Slouching toward Atlanta

Yearning to be born

I couldn't figure out which one I liked better, and I figured we could use all the luck we could get for Carp tonight, so I decided to include both.

Joe Strauss just said

that even though Mo disagrees with this characterization, people around the ballpark are saying to ‘expect Will Ohman to just walk to the other side of the field after tonight’s game’.

Meaning, with Flores going down, Will Ohman is being acquired.

Probably one of the cheaper LHP options at this point.....

I’m okay with that. Sure wish we were looking to do something else too, but I’ll take what I can get.

by SoonerfanTU on Jul 30, 2008 6:32 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Anybody know his contract status?

I’d like this deal even more if he were signed for another year or two.

by SoonerfanTU on Jul 30, 2008 6:35 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hopefully we can resign him.....

We’ll definitely have a hole from the left side in the pen next year. Give him 2-3 years, and lets be done with it.

by SoonerfanTU on Jul 30, 2008 6:39 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

why give a LOOGY 2-3 years?

we picked up Villone for free. The problem the Cardinals had was a) TJ got hurt and b) they thought Flores would be decent.

by azruavatar on Jul 30, 2008 6:51 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Flores and Franklin should be proof

that you shouldn’t give middle relievers/setup men anything more than a 1Yr contract.

by mattyfrommo on Jul 30, 2008 6:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He isn't just a LOOGY.....

He’s a pretty good MR, overall. And if we don’t offer him a longer deal, somebody else will, and we’ll end up with crap again.

by SoonerfanTU on Jul 30, 2008 9:43 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Type A is questionable

but he’ll be at least a Type B for sure.

by rockin the red on Jul 30, 2008 7:07 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

while Ohman would certainly be an upgrade from the left side of the pen

hopefully the manager doesn’t try to use him versus a ton of righties, and it still doesn’t solve our closer problem.

Speaking of Edgar

Jair Jurrjens was the key piece of the deal Detroit sent to the Braves. Which is why it make acquiring Edgar difficult if they want a return on the level of Jurrjens.

Strauss also said the Jason Bay thing is legit

meaning, the Cardinals are interested but the Rays have a MUCH better chance at getting the deal done.

The Pirates GM (or assistant GM) was on XM Radio last night, as I was listening, and he said that they have had 4 chances to trade Bay since they took over. Last off-season, this deadline, next off-season and next deadline.

I bring this up, because, if the Rays back out…some would say that Bay would fall into the Cardinals lap. That’s probably not true, as they could simply just pull him off the market until next year.

Then trade for Matt Morris.

Or, wait.

Ole’ Matt is doing just fine.

After his exit from the Pirates he’s been back in Cards camp hanging out while getting that nice paycheck from Pitt. He’s been roaming Jupiter, A and AA games.

Morris knows where his loyalties lie

Bay Rumor

If you want a good place to keep track of the discussions surrounding Bay, including the Cardinals, Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has a running blog that has updates on the subject. His last post at 6:03 ET:

A source on the scene in San Diego, where Arizona is playing, emails me with definitive word that the Diamondbacks are not a player for Bay. And this is not speculation. Moreover, it sounds like the Diamondbacks might never have been a player for Bay. ... One wonders how many suitors there actually are beyond Tampa and St. Louis
We might actually have a chance if the Pirates really want to move him. Pittsburgh is going to want a bounty, though, which leads me to believe that Chris Perez and Jaime Garcia are going to have to be part of the deal.

we need a middle infielder that puts up offense. I just don’t get making a deal for an outfielder unless their offensive prowess is near hall of fame status… Our outfield is more than adequate.

If we’re going to utilize those trade chips, I’d rather wait until the offseason when we’d have a better chance at upgrading SS or 2B.

by AndyB83 on Jul 30, 2008 7:06 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

My opinion

is that there is only one team in the hunt for Bay and that is Tampa. It seems that some GM’s like to raise the stakes on things to get what they want. Maybe they are trying to pry a big prospect (Price) from the Rays for Bay and maybe someone else (Wilson or Grabow) .

i really want noting to do with Bay

i’ve watched him in Pitt all these years & i just dont see why theres all this fuss around the guy.

the Cards right now have better OFs on the roster than him. he’s not an upgrade. all he’ll do is strip our farm system of talent that quite frankly we cannot afford to lose.

I’d say we’re in the mix as a leverage piece only.

We may even be happily apart of the leverage piece to use on a trade that is completely unrelated. Act like we have a backup plan on Bay, or act as if our prospects have value in the Bay talks to amp them for another team/piece.

Manny to Marlins
Multipe baseball sources say the Red Sox are on the verge of sending disgrunted left fielder Manny Ramirez to the Marlins in a trade for a package of three players that included low Class A Greensboro outfielder Mike Stanton, an 18-year-old who is hitting .275/.351/.569 with 26 home runs in 96 games.

This is the 2008 Cardinals

they can make you happy, but not too happy.

They can win a big game, but then someone gets hurt.
They can hit a go ahead HR late in a game, but then the bullpen coughs it up.
They can blow a team out early, then let them creep back in.
They can have their Ace return, but can’t score any damn runs.

Such is life.

gooooood breaker.

"you know how you pitch mike schmidt? Hard fastballs inside, sliders down and away. you know how you pitch henry aaron? willie mays? Hard stuff inside, soft away. you know how you pitch willie stargell? hard stuff inside, soft away. you know how you pitch god? hard stuff inside, then down and away, and if you get it there you'll get him out. even though he'll know it's coming. or at least they say he knows." -jim lefebvre

so our rotation is

Carp
Lohse
Welley
Pineiro
Looper

not too bad I guess. I keep wanting to send Looper to the ‘pen, but he keeps proving me wrong about that when I think he’s going to start doing really bad.

amazing

“2 on 1 out and ak up mens trouble”, don’t think the braves announcers are paying attention

If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs, perhaps you haven't grasped the situation!
