Rolen Still Ailing

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3511112

Just thought everyone might be interested in how our ex 3rd baseman has faired since leaving St. Louis. This has to be the best move by Mo to date. I can remember how so many people were screaming for Rolen to stay with the birds, but at this point I'm thankful for an awesome trade. I hope the Cards can keep Glaus for a couple more years, he's soft spoken but he's done a great job for us. You have to wonder what life would have been like for Rolen minus Hee Seop Choi. :( Got to feel sorry for Rolen knowing that he'll never be the same player again. At least he got his ring.

I was just going to posst about this

GAWD I’m glad we don’t have to deal with this anymore. I loved “old Rolen,” and I know its not his fault he got hurt, but I got so sick of people lamenting “once Scotty gets right, our team is tough!!!”

who was screaming for Rolen?

I thought it was (potentially) a great trade at the time, and I love Scott Rolen. but the guy’s offensive skills had clearly diminished and he was injury-prone.

I have a love/hate relationship with the Cardinals' middle relief corps.

The only reason that I was not wanting a Rolen trade

was that I had a feeling that it would have turned ut to be a salary dump along the lines of the Edmonds trade. Instead, we got back a very comparable player who had another year on his contract and no past with Tony. The way things have turned out since has made it turn from a good trade to a great one, but I never would have expected Glaus to be availible in a straight swap like that.

They say that it's never too late, but you don't get any younger...

He was one of the greatest Cardinal third basemen -

when he was healthy. No doubt. What a complete package. It just didn’t last long enough.

To be fair to him, he was victim of not one, but two, of the freakiest, most unlikely base path collisions imaginable, which have ended up giving him the shoulder(s) of an arthritic 45 year-old. The way he handled his lack of production from that point was bizarre … very stubborn and combative – bordering on “head case” status.

I guess as the years fly by, we’ll choose to remember the good years. And they were magnificent.

Getting rid of the Rolen soap opera

has been by far the best thing Mo has done this year. I dare say if Rolen was still with us we would be a 4th or 5th place team right now….just because of the drama that would have worn this team down not to mention his horrible hitting stats now.

Such is the dynamic life of baseball players.

The Scott Rolen saga is one of the more disappointing in the history of Cardinals baseball. I’m not overstating, as I am not defining it as THE most disappointing. They traded for one of the premier players in all of baseball, and 2004 may be the only year we ever really saw him at his best. The irritating play by Cintron and the absurd injury due to Choi sapped virtually everything from him.

I know that many have disparaged him as difficult, stubborn, or worse; but I still hold him in the highest esteem for how he played the game. He was a player that came along too late. Neither fans nor managers seem to appreciate the hard-nosed ballplayer the way they once did. I hope, for Scott’s sake, that he can finally put the injuries behind him; and he may once again become the player he should be.

Refer to where I said he isn't THE most disappointing.

Curt Flood’s story isn’t disappointing, it was tragic. It was unfair what happened to him, and it has been extremely unfair that he isn’t recognized for both his greatness as a player and his impact on the game. Our generation will continue to have to carry on the torch for him, and hopefully we pass that down to the subsequent generations.

I left plenty of room in my statement for any who would like to identify more disappointing player histories in St. Louis, so please feel free to acknowledge any that you see fit here.
