Game 109 Overflow 2/Postgame

Cards take this one 8-3. A decent pitching performance by Wellemeyer after the early stuggles. The bullpen did unusually well, with Franklin shutting them down in the eighth when it really mattered. The offense has finally broken out of their recent stuggles with 20 runs in 2 games. The Cards are now 3.5 games out of first and 1.5 game out of the wild card pending the outcome of the Cubs vs. Brewers game.

by sportsman on Jul 29, 2008 10:08 PM EDT reply actions

sorry, but that makes no sense. There's nothing magic about the number nine in the inning.

What makes the closer role exist is the psychological requirement of being able to come in in a high-stress situation with little margin for error and perform.

Pitching the ninth inning up by six runs does not qualify or prepare you to close more than pitching the sixth.

Perspective.

If you pay a MLB player $2.85M in this day and age, then he is

A) A young player that is still establishing himself
B) A one-dimensional veteran player.

Izturis clearly fits in the B) category. They are paying him to play defense. For the most part, he has been pretty good at that, though I would expect fewer errors than the 9 he is currently sporting.

by etp_stl on Jul 29, 2008 10:29 PM EDT up reply actions

For a while, I would have agreed.

Looking at it now, though, I don’t think he is providing much. He was hitting under .230 coming into tonight, and his OPS was barely above .500. That is pretty ugly with the bat. I’m not an hater, but I’m still trying to be realistic as to what he is providing.

by etp_stl on Jul 29, 2008 10:37 PM EDT up reply actions

I'd take the rookie minimum, myself.

It is a business that brings in a great deal of money. Neither you nor I could earn the league minimum, though. That’s why Izturis gets paid $2.85M, and you and I do not. I enjoy watching the games, and hell I even like trying to play arm-chair GM. Neither makes me worthy of that salary.

But he show some improvements.

2 swinging strike outs from his slider.
2 swinging strike out from his fastball
1 swinging strike out from his change up.

All the strike outs came after his runs too. Rough start. But the swinning strike outs on his offspeed stuff is something he hasn’t had in his last few games. I know the Braves are not an offensive power house. But it’s something to build on.

No, he's hurt

I thought they should have signed Everett instead of Izturis (as Everett is the better defender) but apparently Carlos Lee trying to eat Adam has derailed his career.

by Hardcore Legend on Jul 29, 2008 10:40 PM EDT up reply actions

The last time Everett posted greater than a .600 OPS was 2004.

That was only a .702 clip. That was also the last time he hit greater than .250. Izturis has virtually the same offensive numbers, outside of the RBI category. Even then, it has been a long time since Everett really provided any RBIs, either.

by etp_stl on Jul 29, 2008 10:54 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm sorry, I meant above a .700 OPS.

I was trying to say a number that didn’t start with a .600.

by etp_stl on Jul 29, 2008 10:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Everett is probably the best defensive SS in baseball when healthy

Sadly, he is not healthy. So…whatever. If he were, I’d say we should pick him up—but then again, if he were he probably wouldn’t have been DFA’d.

by mojowo11 on Jul 30, 2008 9:22 AM EDT up reply actions

IMO, this is not enough of an upgrade to justify spending the money.

I know that you’ll get him for the league minimum, but you are simply adding marginally better defense. There is no offensive upside to adding Everett, and as such there is no reason to pick up another .600 OPS MIF.

by etp_stl on Jul 29, 2008 10:42 PM EDT up reply actions

not really

both are extremely solid with the glove, and neither can hit worth a damn.

I suppose Everett is a bit of a better defender, but it’s a marginal difference.

Me and my sis are looking to go to a game here in the next week and were looking for tixs, but neither of us has used Stub hub before. Anyone have any experience with it? Is it pretty safe and reliable? Do you get your tickets mailed to you or do you pick them up from the box office? any help would be appreciated

I've used it

by TNTinCO on Jul 29, 2008 11:12 PM EDT up reply actions

You can also get then the day of

If you order your tickets within 48Hrs of the event they wont ship them to you but will hold them at a “pick up” location, for the IL side of the river that is the Ramada Inn next to Lotawata Creek near the Mall, not sure where the MO side is.

by StLHugo on Jul 30, 2008 7:45 AM EDT up reply actions

Another method

I haven’t used Stubhub, so can’t speak to it. But depending on where you [live or are staying in StL], and depending on whether you have the time, you can get a ticket if you can get to the park around 8:30 or 9:00 in the am the day of the game. Wait in line a while and they’ll sell you a couple tickets for ridiculously cheap, $11 for the pair, and they could be box seats or they could be standing room. You take your chances there. I think it’s called the First Pitch program.

I stayed downtown in late September a couple years ago, when I was visiting my daughter at parents’ weekend at SLU, and I walked over to the park and got us a pair of tickets (face value $45 apiece) for a Saturday afternoon game. Turned out to be Wainer’s second save of that season, the game where Spiezio hit the 8th-inning bases-clearing triple with 2 outs. I just thought the whole deal was pretty cool, since tickets were hard to come by at late notice.

I'll have to try that

Metrolink up in the morning, get some cheap tickets, Metrolink back, Metrolink up at night, watch game, Metrolink back…
