Game 108 Open Thread: July 28 2008
St. Louis Cardinals @ Atlanta Braves

| Looper | Morton |
| 9-8, 4.49 | 2-3, 6.00 |
the cards catch a break tonight, missing a left-hander (jo-jo reyes) who has pitched well against them in the past. he was supposed to go tonight, but the braves had to use reyes in relief over the weekend; in his stead they'll start charlie morton, a young right-hander with so-so control . . . good opportunity for the cardinals to score some runs if they can exhibit some patience.
derrick goold reports that mozeliak and luhnow are both with the team down in atlanta as the trade deadline approaches. the season is 2/3 over with after tonight.

Closer?
Leach is reporting that Duncan renamed Izzy the closer. I thought LaRussa made a statement about Franklin being the guy yesterday?

How many failed attempts at closing
by Isringhausen does it take? I hope that report is wrong. Of course, one could say something similar regarding Franklin.

Me, I'm rooting for Izzy...
IF he can close out the 9th (which I think will be easier for him to do on the road), the entire bullpen should be better!

8 saves to 300
is messing with Izzy’s head. Last chance to get the job back. Their doing it on the road as well in case the move implodes.

Yes per M Leach - here is the link
Cardinals pitching coach Dave Duncan acknowledged Monday that Jason Isringhausen will resume closing duties for St. Louis, with interim closer Ryan Franklin moving back into a setup role. However, Duncan believes that Isringhausen’s recent outings have shown that he’s at least close to regaining his old form. That, combined with a recent slide by Franklin, prompted the Cards to make the change. Both pitchers were notified prior to Monday night’s game against Atlanta.
“I personally see improvement in the way Izzy’s throwing the ball,” Duncan said. “If I didn’t think he could go out there and get the save, I certainly wouldn’t agree—not that it would make any difference, but my opinion wouldn’t be what it is.”

I am not even sure if the Spinger part is true
The only place I have heard about it is FSN (it isn’t in that article that is linked), but it makes sense. Might as well give all the crucial innings to the vets, and that isn’t a knock on Springer

Thinking about offense
I was checking the batting average on gameday. We have 6 guys with 300 plus AVG on the lineup today including Looper. The other two are Glaus and Joey, they both can hit for power. The ninth player can at least play good defense at SS.

Crazy Play!
Interesting thing about that play was that right after the ball hit the backstop and started careening parellel to the first base line, Pujols, who had just scored, immeditealy started waving him home. Yadi’s eyes were actually on Pujols as he was approaching 3rd, and as he got closer he looked at Oquendo, who put up a late, half-hearted ‘hold’ sign. Yadi plowed right through it. I love Pujols aggressiveness on the basebaths, even for our designated tortoise!
