Carpenter starts for St Louis Wednesday!
According to Derrick Goold. Well, let's see what happens. I, for one, approve. Like I said in a different thread, Carp can be just as much a psychological boost as he is a physical one.
What is everybody else's opinion? Good move? Bad move? If Waino can come back, and they do make him a closer, a rotation of Carp, Lohse, Wellemeyer, Looper, and Piniero for the rest of the year isn't bad at all.
Put Franklin and Springer back in their customary roles, Waino to shut the door, and we've got a helluva shot to make a run at the post season, boys.

Or...
If they put Waino in the rotation, and trade for Fuentes, and move Wellemeyer or Looper to the bullpen, that’s not half bad either.
Things are looking up, boys and girls. A win tonight makes everything better.

i approve of carp coming back
but i think it’s a rehab start or two too early. he’s been complaining that his fastball hasn’t been doing what he wants it to do and his control and stamina seem to be a bit on the slow side. that being said, it’ll be great to finally see carp pitch for the cardinals. the obvious move is to send down boggs when you activate carp.
now, when waino comes back it’s a different story. TLR will have to pick a starter to move to the bullpen and then pick a reliever to be sent down. my picks are wellemeyer to the bullpen (where I would think he’d have a chance to close) and send jiminez back to memphis. that leaves kmac for the seventh, frank for the eighth, and wellemeyer for the ninth with springer and izzy for earlier key matchups and flores and villone the LOOGYs.
making wainwright a closer again is one of the stupidest moves i’ve ever heard of and shouldn’t even be considered at this juncture, no matter how bad a reliable closer is needed.

I love the guy...
but really? Isn’t this a bit soon? I’d rather have him at 100% for 2009 than to have had him been rushed back for this season and risk more significant long-term injury

he had TJ surgery
there’s really no point in having him sit out the last 2.5 months just to sit them out. if he’s ready to go (and carp has been through this before, so he should know when he’s ready to go), he’s ready to go. there’s really no injury risk by him pitching a few times this year.

keep him on a pitch count for the next two starts
if you’re worried about his elbow.
Carp’s return is of course contingent on Sunday’s BP session and continued lack of elbow pain.

it's not a bit soon.
the other option was him pitching the same amount of innings / pitches in the minors. That takes the same toll on a body; it’s just against weaker competition.
On with the (good) youth movement!

agreed
Also, since we can’t count on anyone, aside from Lohse, in the rotation to go deeper than the 5th inning I don’t think it will add any additional stress to the bullpen.

He looks ready to me.....
Guess we’ll find out. But even if he isn’t 100% ready, “stuff-wise”, he’s still likely better than anything else we’d have trotted out there on day 5.

Carp's secondary pitches are fine
it’s his fastball he has trouble with. And it’s not even the cutter. He can’t locate the 4-seamer at times during rehab. The cutter and the curveball are so good that missed location is still getting people out. His fastball, though, fails him. That’s simply something that will come with innings logged.

I just realized
that my wife bought us visitor dugout tickets for this game at Turner. Good god, I hope I can make the drive from knoxville in time for his first pitch.
