Game 105 Open Thread -- July 25, 2008

St. Louis @ New York

Boggs_mitchell_medium   Ph_460059_medium

  Mitchell Boggs            Mike Pelfrey

 3-1, 6.59                  8-6, 3.81

Boggs made two starts in the minors after being optioned -- a 7 IP, 2 ER outing and a 6IP, 1 ER outing.  Over those 13 innings he struck out 9 and walked 6.  He's another pitcher who isn't quite ready for the majors but the Cardinals have a need and Boggs is getting another chance.  Of course, Boggs last start in the majors was against the Mets when he gave up 10 ER . . . er, pretend I didn't say that.

My one request for the night is that the Cardinal bats wake up.  Despite the seeming need for pitching (be it a reliever or a starter), the Cardinals scored just 9 runs during the 4 game sweep by the Brewers and I remain firmly in the camp that an upgrade in the lineup would provide greater dividends.

The group think on the last 58 games was 32 wins resulting in an 89-73 record. Surprisingly optimistic given the results of the last 4 games, imo.

I'll be out tonight -- overflow threads at 7:30 and 8:30.  Please, keep it clean in the game thread tonight.

The Good News

The Cubs just lost in the ninth to the Marlins 3 – 2. See it happens to them too

by FlimtotheFlam on Jul 25, 2008 6:01 PM EDT   0 recs

haha

yeah now they just need to do another dozen or so times and we’ll be even

by kalmavet on Jul 25, 2008 6:11 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

yeah but

they at least have hope in Woods coming off the DL. We have no hope – none.

Buster Olney just said we lead the league in being ahead of games through 6 or 7 innings. Not surprisingly, he thinks the NL central will come down to bullpens.

by enoscountry on Jul 25, 2008 6:15 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

True but maybe

he’ll have a josh beckett quality blister, not that i’m wishing an injury on any player. There is a chance it won’t heal and will continue to bother him

by kalmavet on Jul 25, 2008 6:17 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

No hope?

We have hope of Wainwright and Carpenter coming back.

We have hope that Mo will make a deal for a Sherrill/Fuentes.

There is plenty of hope.

sigh

how does Tony expect me to “keep it clean” when he keeps starting Mini Me at SS?

here’s the Cards lineup

Skippy LF
LUD RF
The Mang 1st
Rick CF
Troy 3rd
Yadda C
AK 2nd
Boogs P
Mini Me SS

I'm going to go try to find a puppy and kick it. - Brad Thompson AND THAT'S A WINNER!

by gdm426 on Jul 25, 2008 6:13 PM EDT   0 recs

like the lineup

except the whole mini me thing at SS. why not start ryan?

by stlcardinalsfang on Jul 25, 2008 6:16 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Considering.....

Iz and Ryan can’t hit a lick, and we’ve had trouble scoring runs, and Miles plays a better SS than most give him credit for, who exactly would you like to see at SS?

Thats about the best offensive lineup we can play.

by SoonerfanTU on Jul 25, 2008 6:16 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Agreed

Ryan has disappointed this year. He looks like a career back-up/utility guy to me. I remember Miles being an absolute butcher as SS last year, but he seems better this year. Correct me if I’m wrong.

by kalmavet on Jul 25, 2008 6:18 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I don't remember him at SS last year.....

Good or bad. But you are right, he has seemed perfectly fine there this season, and that is all I care about.

by SoonerfanTU on Jul 25, 2008 6:19 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

i am hesistant to give Mini Me praise at SS because

i fear the second i do he’ll have a bad game. or 30.

has he been adequate? most definitely. does his starting at SS give us the best chance to win? not when IZ2 & Boog are on the bench. both are far, far superior SS than Mini Me can ever be.

are they hitting right now? no. i’ll give you that. but MIni Me’s recent upturn in O still does not give him the nod over starting at SS. especially when AK is at 2nd. he’s not an offensive weapon. he’s not even close.

I'm going to go try to find a puppy and kick it. - Brad Thompson AND THAT'S A WINNER!

Miles: three errors in one inning vs. SF in'07

by gocards62 on Jul 25, 2008 7:15 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

that's fair enough

but AK can’t hit a lick either. so you stick miles at second (his natural position) and slot izturis in at SS (his natural position). still a player who can’t hit a lick, but at least the defense is at its best.

by stlcardinalsfang on Jul 25, 2008 6:20 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

hmmm

i hadn’t thought of it that way, but Kennedy plays a mean 2b and he does get on a base a whole lot more the iz2. Sure he has no power, but i think it’s fair to say he’s a better hitter.

Miles + Kennedy = best chance to get on base, but you’re right it is a downgrade defensively at the more important position

by kalmavet on Jul 25, 2008 6:21 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

you're right about the hitting part

but i think miles and iz2 give us the best chance to win.

by stlcardinalsfang on Jul 25, 2008 6:25 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

could be could be

really the whole point of this is w/ our Middle Infield something is gonna suck somewhere

yeah

there’s always that guarantee.

i’m out. bring home a winner boys.

+1

If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs, perhaps you haven't grasped the situation!

by sportsman on Jul 25, 2008 7:16 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Good lineup

Glad to see Lud batting 2nd/3rd-after-inning-1 and Miles ninth.

Here’s hoping Kennedy gets a timely hit or two to cap off rallies. And that there are rallies.

by liam on Jul 25, 2008 7:02 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I hope Mo doesnt feel too much pressure...

And sell off Rasmus or something… that would really suck…......but I have faith in Mo!

He's not going anywhere

Dewitt said as much, and now with his injury he is not quite as tradeable an asset.

His injury might be a good thing then!

i will not be in the thread tonight

i think it’s best if i take a night off from posting on here. i’ve tended to go overboard a lot the past couple of nights. i’ll be back tommorrow.

go cards!

Enjoy the respite

I stopped watching for a bit after they blew the huge lead vs pitt, then they went on to sweep SD, here’s to hoping your break has a similar result :)

by kalmavet on Jul 25, 2008 6:19 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I don't know

But I do not want to see a run at ANYONE. Not Brian Roberts, not Sherrill, not a closer, not anyone. If we make a run for those guys, we’ll lose a potentially valuable trading chip/ML caliber player in someone like Mortensen or Anderson for a couple months of rent-a-service. I wouldn’t mind if I thought we had a realistic chance at winning it all, but I just don’t see it happening. There are too many variables that we are relying on, including Carpenter coming back. I’m guessing the odds of a legitimate come-back from Carpenter are 50% for the rest of the season, and I just don’t have faith.. this year.
If we can just wait 1-2 more years and not trade the farm, we’re going to have a hell of a team. We have a potential/all-star position players in Molina, Glaus, Rasmus, Pujols, the Walrus and if you have faith in Ludwick, him too. Our bullpen WILL be pretty good.. Perez will be a very dominant reliever (he’s only been in professional ball for 2 years!) and McClellan has proven he can pitch. Garcia and Mortensen are going to be solid MLB pitchers, and by 2010, we are going to have a rock solid rotation.. Potentially Carpenter, Wainwright, Mortensen, Garcia.. and Lohse, Todd, the stud college pitcher we draft in 09, whoever. We’re going to be ALL RIGHT!

by KeepOnRolen on Jul 25, 2008 6:38 PM EDT   0 recs

boy, I envy your patience

I’ll try to keep it mind the next two months! (Would still like to see a deal in the off season, at least for a soild LHP reliever, if possible, and better yet – a dependable closer. Otherwise, I’ll hang in there…..thanks to your optimism.

by ccthemovieman on Jul 25, 2008 6:56 PM EDT   0 recs

To throw a ball up in the zone like that to ludwick.

that is wrong. He always does that. It is easier to get the force out at 2B throwing to a position player rather than spin and throw to first to a minor league pitcher.
