The only amazing thing about this season is the fact that we’ve won this many games with what is arguably the worst bullpen in the history of baseball.

St.Louis sportswriters are a joke

Professional writers in NY, Boston or Chicago would tear into TLR. He is sacrosanct here and our so-called journalists are sniviling cowards.

by Evilfrog on Jul 24, 2008 11:21 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

oh right...

You want him to talk about how Franklin and Izzy and Flores hasn’t got the job down. He should sit down with Leach and Gloud and just say. Man, These guess just aren’t good enough to get the job done that we pay them for.

And then…we’ll win more games!

by stlcardinalsfang on Jul 24, 2008 11:24 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

so who should close?

Izzy? Perez? Flores?

The only guy in the bullpen that really could be trusted in Springer. And he can’t even pitch more than ~ an inning every 3 games.

every 3?

he pitched 3 out of 4 days just this past weekend.

by stlcardinalsfang on Jul 24, 2008 11:32 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

he has pitched 32 innings this year.

Tony doesn’t want him to pitch in back-to-back innings even if he only faces 1 batter in the first inning. The guy is old and he has already been on the DL this year.

Springer pitching that many innings lately is not a choice. It’s caused my the starters not being able to go 6 innings and having flores, franklin, and izzy pitching horriblely.

by Evilfrog on Jul 24, 2008 11:38 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

he has done well

Tony loved to use him last year. After the injury this year not so much. I just feel the medical staff told him he is close to blowing. I have no evidence to back this up expect for his sparse useage and the fact that once he sits after warming up he is done for the game.

When asked about the pen. He said he didn’t want to get into the that trap. They just went over that two nights ago. His point that the offense needed to score more than 3 runs. Other peoples point was that the bullpen should give up as many runs. (6 in the last 3 nights.) as far as I can tell, either or would have resaulted in a few wins.

The only favorable pitching match up the Cards have is Game 2: Pineiro vs. TBD. Pedro is out (although Pedro has not been Pedro at all now for a long time.

The games will be close. I hope the Cards take two…

I guess I just don't get why people are angry

maybe it is the cynicism created from the clear pattern this organization has taken in the off-seasons or the way the bullpen has performed this year, but seriously, people…to get this angry that they blew another game is ridiculous.

THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING FOR 2 MONTHS NOW AND IT WILL CONTINUE TO HAPPEN.

It’s just a fact of the 2008 team. You should expect the bullpen to blow it late in a game and just hope like heck the offense bails them out late. It just makes no sense to be so outraged, so enraged that you’ve gotta swear, vent, rant, etc.

Just accept it already.

Hardcore’s right, the pen has been blowing up ever since Wagonmaker & Welley got hurt. like it or not, there’s not a lot MO can do right now. getting angry & turning on each other does nothing for us right now. turn your computer off & chill out if you can’t be civil.

Perez is down in Memphis to work on his slider. He’ll be better off getting that thing going and comming up later this year. Tony trashing the pen in the media isn’t going to do any good. I have no idea why people are calling for this?

It’s a rebuilding year. The team is rebuilding. The fact that we are only 4 games out late July is a blessing. When we struggle there is no reason to panic. It’s going to happen. And they are going to bounce back and play some good games.

He is there to work on his slider. Has pretty clear instructions to throw slider down there and not worry about where it gets hit to. He was sent down to improve something he couldn’t do in the middle of a divisional race.

waiting on Wagonmaker & Carp is really the smartest move right now

their presence alone will do wonders for the pen woes.

i hate it too, i want moves & trades. but the facts are the Cardinals can no longer afford to mortgage the future to pay for the present. blowing up on here does nothing positive for any one. turn off the computer & go take a walk. it’s only a game people.

Perez needs to work on that slider, we dont need him up here trying to get it right when the games mean this much. we also don’t need Frank & Izzy at the back of the pen either. flip flop them & KMac & Russ for now. is that a perfect solution? no. but its probably the best move they have right now.

I don’t think they can suspend them, but they get fined. For a guy like LaRue, probably not making much, a decent chunk of his paycheck, too

big picture/little picture

in the big picture, given that the Cards were supposed to be bad enough to deserve relegation to the minors as a franchise, its nice that they’ve done well enough to be able to be so frustrating when they lose. For a rebuilding year, this aint so bad

little picture, its tough to stomach yet another bullpen implosion to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Cards have blown 12 saves in the 9th or later (2 in one game) and are 3-8 in those games. Even with all the other issues in the pen, if we had a lock down closer. we’d be in first.

Umps need trashing

It’s a form of regulating them. You can’t argue balls and strikes in the game, and they need to be held accountable for their awful, awful work.

Is very bad to steal A-Pu's rum...is very bad.

by Power Slurve on Jul 24, 2008 11:50 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

The Umps really need to brought to task

Their performances have been getting worse and worse and are clearly not being regulated by major league baseball. Something has to be done about it.

They need to be replaced...

At least for balls and strikes, they already can be replaced. So why not? Make the game fairer and more enjoyable for everyone except the “purists” who think it’s okay for Umps to decide games.

by DiscoJer on Jul 24, 2008 11:57 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes and all the time the unwritten rule that a player sholdnt show up an ump,

is really BS, because alot of the umps dont mind showing up the players or acting like Leslie Nielsen, it seems there are alot of them the last few years that want to be seen as well as heard.

I’ve gotten to the point where I don’t watch ESPN anymore. It’s a ridiculous waste of time when the internet is 100X better for sports highlights and analysis. It’s a shame though that the “WWL” has so much control over the sports media narrative – “Favre! Clemens! Red Sox! Duke!” They’ve become a parody of themselves.

Sorry...

On behalf of Brewers fans, I would like to apologize to y’all at VEB for all of the posing and such our boys have been doing. Please understand, this is not to disrespect you, but to try and enjoy a moment that seemed like it would never come for this snakebitten club.

I know everyone in St. Louis is pissed about how this series turned out. But I ask you to remember, you will still have your ancient Cardinal tradition next year and for the foreseeable. Sellouts. Pujols (who won’t leave you). Another year of hope.

We return to the muck from whence we came. While I understand, just remember, you get this every year. We get it every 25.

Cut us and our boys some slack please (as tough as it may be). And save your ire for certain other enemies who remain a threat to freedom.

by BrewerApologist on Jul 25, 2008 1:25 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

They did the same thing last year

when they were in first place. Prince Fielder and his chest-thumping challenge of a catcher at home plate, Braun’s struts to 1B, Cordero’s antics on the mound, etc.

They’ve learned nothing, so they deserve no slack. Some day, some team will take exception to what they do and the benches will clear.

by Hardcore Legend on Jul 25, 2008 1:30 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

And as much as I hate to say it

that team that will take exception will probably be the Cubs. I don’t think Sweet Lou will turn his head of these antics like Tony did.

by KYCards on Jul 25, 2008 1:37 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

If it would be the Cubs some day

gotta hope that Julio Castillo isn’t pitching at the time.

Read that story. Friggin’ nuts.

Getting swept by the Brewers was pretty tough, but we put up good fights in three of the four games and made a good team play their best to beat us.

As long as the Brew Crew gives the Cubs a beating like that in their four game set next week, all will be forgiven. That and a sweep of the Pond Scum should get us all back in high spirits.

All the years we beat up on the Brewers on our way to the NL Central Title…they were bound to give a payback in return at some point.
