Casting Call:
Actor needed to play the role of closer in film about overachieving, "scrappy" team that wins the World Series. Must be able to get three outs before the other team scores. Impersonators (or even look-alikes) of Barney Schultz, Bruce Sutter, Al Hrabosky, Todd Worrell, Lee Smith, Dennis Eckersley, or the former (but not the latter) Jason Isringhausen welcome. Auditions held nightly by our director, Mr. LaRussa. Mr. Franklin, the latter Mr. Isringhausen, Mr. Perez, and Mr. McClellen hve been deemed unsuitable for the role, and are to report back to central casting for role reassignment. the role is open to anyone in the studio's employ, including any crewman working in the back lots making wagons for the set, or any other Carpenter available. Producer "Slow Mo" may be amenable to renting an actor from another studio to fill the role if the cost is not too high. Studio wishes to avoid losses it will incur if it has to rewrite the script, turning the film into a tragedy. Suggestions welcome.
Studio will alert Security if Mr. Veres or Mr. Bottalico attempt to audition.

chris perez?
i hear he’s had control problems lately, throwing a little wild. i wonder if he just needs glasses? and a catchy song to play when he comes out of the bullpen…

Why not give...
Aaron Miles a shot? He’s been surprising everywhere else. It can’t get much worse.
I still say that we should go after Huston Street even though it would be dealing with Beane.
This offseason… Get Orlando Hudson or Orlando Cabrera, or both, and then get K-Rod for big money. That would solidify the pen and allow Chris Perez more time to acquaint himself with the majors in the setup role. I know, that would blow all 30 million coming off of the payroll from this year, and then some, but it sure would help… Plus, it wouldn’t cost any prospects (just a 1st round draft pick (unless we are in the top 15, then a 2nd))
Closer: K Rod
SU: Perez
RP: Franklin
RP: McClellan
RP: Springer (if he doesn’t retire)
RP: Worrell/Garcia/Boggs/Thompson
RP: FA LOOGY/Villone

makes some sense
aaron miles has been productive for us, no questions. and he could be in the future. but i would rather bring in the O-dog, who i think would go for cheaper than cabrera. I agree that our left payroll over should all be put to aquire rodriguez. but there’s one issue with your bullpen. assuming that springer doesn’t retire and villone has the last spot, we only have 1 lefty in the pen. and villone is in fact a lefty specialist, he still is up in age and tends to leave pitches up from time to time and will be unavaliable some of the time. start garcia boggs in triple A and give thompson a long look in spring training next season. possible trade bait? so i’d keep villone in the last spot, but then aquire a lefty such as sherrill or fuentes to set up, and give perez a spot at long reliever. another idea: would mulder possibly be better in the pen. if he makes it back, i’d like to see them give him a chance as a bullpen guy. less pitches, more unlikely to injure his shoulder. i want to hear what you guys think

too bad
fuentes will only go somewhere he can compete for a closers role and sherrill will probably also want to close next year also. i do hope that this years bullpen problems will make mo want to pursue k-rod very heavily.
