Recent interview with Dave Duncan, John Abbamondi, and whom Rosenthal says we are scounting.
Seeing as I work nights at the the hospital, I usually catch the interviews on the early morning shows, and then the ones sometimes after the games with Mike shannon half drunk at his restaurant talking about the good old times. Anyways I just wanted to share some stuff I have heard in the past 24 hours. With that being said it is 4:50 in the morning central time.
Interview with Dave Duncan on the morning grind.
The interview at first seemed like dave was just going to have a normal mundane response to questions but he perked up quickly once Carpenter came too topic. Jimmy "the Cat" Hayes asked him whom he though he would see first, Carp or Wagonmaker? His response was Carp. When Jim pushed further and asked if it would be 3 rehab outings dave responded with "If that", basically implying that after a rehab outing on friday he thinks Carp has a very good shot at rejoining the team. After Dave hung up all the guys were in agreeement that Dave thinks Carp will be here soon.
The other intresting thing was that he supported the idea of bullpen help. At first he started talking about how his bullpen has also helped win alot of games and people don't seem to talk about that but when asked if a arm would be welcomed he responded with a round about yes.
Interview with John Abbamandi, cardinals assistant GM following tuesday nights loss,
The main thing that I took away from this was the following, when asked about the current situation and trades and so forth this was basically said by john. "we want to make the best move for the team and we don't want to do anything in response to what the brewers and cubs have done but you have to understand something. Fans keep pushing for us to make a deal but if we showed you some of the offer sheets that we are getting for trades you guys would slam the door shut on them too" (those weren't his exact words, Im just paraphrasing). Basically it sounds like team are asking for way too much. Whether this is true or not we will never really know but think of it this way. Would you really give up Jess Todd and probably another prospect for Eddie Guardado. I know I wouldn't! Erik over at future redbirds shares this view so make sure to jump over there and see what he voiced. Oh, warning there's bad news about colby over there also.
Dane perry has some advice for the cards on his wish list,
Cardinals
"Although the Cardinals could use an adequate offensive shortstop, the real need is pitching. Consider the problems ... Mark Mulder is back on the DL, Chris Carpenter is coming off a rough rehab outing, and Adam Wainwright won't be back until next month. Oh, and the St. Louis bullpen leads the majors in blown saves, and ranks sixth in the 16-team NL in relief pitches thrown. So effectiveness and perhaps fatigue are both concerns going forward. What the Cardinals really need is an elite, shutdown closer (Huston Street?), but those are hard to come by. If nothing else, they could use another right-handed arm in the pen."
I thought we needed help on the left side of the bullpen?
Lastly, I don't know if this has been mentioned yet or not but in Ken Rosenthals lates piece he had this too say,
"The Cardinals, whose bullpen has become almost a nightly issue, had two scouts in Baltimore on Tuesday night, presumably to watch Orioles closer George Sherrill. The Orioles want either a shortstop or outfielder for Sherrill, but the Cardinals don't have a shortstop who is close to the majors, and they're not going to trade Colby Rasmus for a reliever . "
Maybe we could package a couple other prospects or something, anyways go cards!

Honestly,
I think the cards would have to offer more, roberts is the orioles pride and Joy. You could start with those two but i don’t think they would want kennedy. Try Ludwick, Allen Craig, Jon Jay, and Clayton Mortenson

I still think some people are undervaluing Ludwick
If he sustained his current pace over 675 PA (a full season), he’d hit 40+ homers. I don’t know about you, but I don’t know of too many 40 homer guys who play stellar defense and are cheap that teams are looking to get off their books.
Unless you believe this Ludwick thing is a mirage still…in which case I can only disagree.

It's not whether I believe it...
It’s whether the Orioles would trade away one of the faces of their franchise and a high-in-demand reliever for a guy who’s putting up great numbers this season, but who is 29 years old and has a history of major injuries. They’d have to assume that Ludwick will have three or more 40 homer seasons in his future in order to trade for him. They already have Luke Scott and Nick Markakis as corner outfielders - guys with 30 homer potential. They have a top prospect in center field in Adam Jones - why would they trade for Ludwick unless he was going to be a guy who’s going to be BETTER than those guys over the next few years? He’s older than all those guys and only cost controlled for one more year than they are.
Similarly, I thought the Rangers were nuts to give up Edinson Volquez for Josh Hamilton, even with how good he’s been this year you could argue that there are a lot more sweet hitting outfielders in the game than their are shutdown, high strikeout, cost controlled young pitchers. Hamilton probably sells more tickets, but stud pitchers get you closer to the playoffs.

One thing though,
I really like your idea. If there was a team with a solution to our problems, the orioles would be it.

Duncan would be starting if he were hitting like he's capable of.....
Ryan could be starting for us as well. Reyes has 3-5 potential, just needs a change of scenery. AND…..we have some other good spects that I didn’t list above.

this post
is depressing. the orioles are probably the worst team in the league to deal with and colby hurt really just steams my clams.

Yes...
But does it steam your hams?
This post is depressing. I’m not a doomsdayer, in fact, normally I’m really optimistic…but I’ve also come to the conclusion help isn’t coming via the trade market. At all. I can just hope Looper and Wellemeyer take their demotions to the pen with grace and go to it once Carp and Wagonmaker come back.

Internal Solutions for the Bullpen
I may be the only one in Cardinals Nation who seems to agree with TLR about the needs of this team, both current and future. While I cannot disagree that a LH pitcher is needed for the bullpen for the next two/three years, I do think our most pressing need is for an impact bat on offense. Tony is not just thinking about this year with his logic, and I feel a lot of us are misinterpreting his comments as going against Mozeliak’s long-term plans. I personally feel they are one and the same. Here’s why.
1. with our recovering aces, 2009’s starting rotation looks very promising with Carp and WW at the front, Pineiro solidified at the backend, and a number of options on our 40man for the rest.
Looper and Lohse both free agents that will be pursued (to a degree) and is a reasonable expectation they will consider St. Louis at somewhat of a discounted rate; Wellemeyer is arb eligible and obviously has the potential; Clement has an option, though we can write that off as not going to happen; Kyle McClellan, Jess Todd, Mitchell Boggs, Mike Parisi, Jaime Garcia, Brad Thompson, Anthony Reyes and more internal ‘options’.
2. When Carp and/or Wainwright do come back, they are going to the rotation. That bumps one or two to the pen and I suspect Wellemeyer is the first to go there, with Looper a close second. (I personally would like to see Looper there)
3. Bullpen arms available in this market are WAY overpriced. Jon Rauch was gotten on the cheap IMO, and maybe that will keep the price down some, but I’m afraid Sherrill will cost to much, Guardado is a FA after this year, and Mahay seems to be staying put (though I’d like him in Red/White).
4. We will need a bat both this year and next. I know Ankiel, Ludwick and Rasmus seem slated for next years OF spots, but we don’t have to go to the OF. I know MI isn’t as promising on the FA market either. That’s why I feel that Tony and Mo are looking at names to trade for that improve our lineup, keep our farm system intact, and keep relative costs down making Bill DeWallet happy.
So I say stay the course, continue to compete this year on grit, effort and talent combined, and look at the macroscopic, not the microscopic needs of this organization. Remember, A returning ace (or two) will impact our bullpen as well as rotation. Motte, Perez, Worrell and others continue to pitch in Memphis and track for our bullpen in the future—cheap alternatives to overpriced arms). This team will be in it, this year and next. Let’s get another offensive weapon, rekindle the 100 win seasons of yesteryore, and regain our place among the top of the NL Central. As a Fan, I implore Tony and Mo to keep their focus on a bat and keep the cardinals as a prolific contender, year after year after year after year….

we are way behind
the crew and cubs for the starting eight. this can’t be fixed in the next week. we need many pieces and mo needs to start now when the “trade fever” affects pretty much everyone. it won’t be until the off-season, though, that we can think about assembling a truly competitive team. even so, it will be tough to do based on the FA lists and our movable prospects. we let the farm go too long and remain a couple of years off from pulling off deals like the cubs and brewers have done, though it mystifies me that rauch went so cheap and we are apparently looking at paying more for sherrill.
