Now that I've settled down

I could see us winning the next two.

Here’s some Farmer’s Almanac style reasoning:

Looper’s had starts where he went fewer than four innings three times this year, including his last start. In the starts after those two previous short starts, he had a starts where he went 7 shutout innings (HOU) and 7 innings of 2-run ball (CHC). So it wouldn’t be a shocker if Looper came out as a stopper for us tomorrow.

Sabathia, meanwhile, has thrown complete games in his last two starts. The last time he pitched back-to-back CGs was last season. The start following was against the Braves, when he allowed 5 runs over 8 1/3. We oughta be able to score some runs off Sabathia in any case, Glaus has good history against him.

Tackle Box knows that we’ve always had success against Sheets for whatever reason and Wellemeyer appeared to’ve found his slider as his last start went on. If he can come out Thursday with an effective slider on hand and we get it done tomorrow, a split of this series isn’t out of the question.

Lot of ifs and iffy reasoning, sure, but these Cardinals have surprised us more than once this year.

Heck, if we split this series and the Snakes keep owning the Cubs, we’ll be in a tie for the division lead by the time the Cards catch their flight to Flushing.

When I was in grade school

we had these uneven bars that got higher and higher on our play ground. One time, I climbed up to the top one and was swinging from my hands maybe 10-12 feet off the ground. I decided to swing out and land on my feet. Instead, I landed flat on my back. I couldn’t breathe for about 3 minutes just sitting there hyperventilating. (My friends ran to get the playground watcher and told her I was dying.)

I think that tonight’s loss feels something like that.

One time my little brother was having a birthday party

I was playing basketball in the driveway with all his friends, and since I had already gone through puberty and had a growth spurt I was dominating the boards. One kid had enough when I reached over him and turned around and punched me. Thing is, his arm level was right at my nuts. Full-forced 9-year-old punch directly to the gonads. That’s what tonight’s loss feels like to me.

Brewers have to be proud of their front office

Doug Melvyn has gone for it and made deals designed to put the Brewers over the hump – ala Jockety before the cheap owners castrated him. Melvyn actually built a strong team in Texas and look how bad they’ve been since he was fired. Our management really doesn’t care whether we win this year as long as we have a competitive cheap team in ‘09. Get used to it Cards fans – we will become the Minnesota of the NL. A nice team that develops talent for other teams to win championships with.

Uhh....really clark?

First off it’s Doug Melvin, not Melvyn.

Second: This has nothing to do with management, take off the tinfoil cap. The Brewers gave up a top prospect to get a half a year rental, us not making that trade had NOTHING to do with money. Our management did not want to give up Colby Rasmus for half a year of CC Sabathia.

Also, the Brewers are winning right now, not because of making big money splashes , but because they’ve developed so many good young players within their own organization.

You have no fucking clue what you’re talkng about.;

Ridiculous

Jocketty got us in the mess we’re in, and we’re climbing out of it a whole hell of a lot faster than anyone could’ve expected.

The Brewers aren’t good because their owners aren’t cheap, they’re good because they patiently built a great team with adeep farm

by liam on Jul 22, 2008 10:49 PM EDT up reply actions

They didn't develop

Sabathia, Durham, Torres or Suppan. Those were smart veteran acquisitions to complement a good farm system. Do you think we would acquire that kind of veteran to fuel a pennant run today?

The time has come for someone to put his foot down and that foot is me

by heathen on Jul 22, 2008 10:56 PM EDT up reply actions

You really have no idea what you're talking about do you?

The reason they could acquire those 2 of those players is because they’ve developed a very good farm system which they could trade from. Torres is not a good pitcher and will not last as a closer.

As for Suppan, if you think his was a smart signing, then you are clueless and I will thank god you aren’t the Cardinals GM. That was an awful contract.

Management is doing the right thing by not tying up a ton of money in mediocre players, and not trading away our future for half a year rentals.

I understand you are angry about this loss, I am too, but don’t be stupid.

boo cubs, hooray beer

by Raconteur on Jul 22, 2008 11:01 PM EDT up reply actions

No

Because we neglected the farm system for so long under Jocketty’s lead. It’s flat-out stupid to say the ownership group “castrated” Jocketty by putting more of an effort to develop talent and build a deep, quality farm system.

And Durham is hardly a big piece of their team, considering he was added a few days ago for better offense on the bench.

this is stupid

I chalked it up to people just blowing off steam at the time but how many Cards’ hitters do the exact same thing when they hit a homer - including #5. All of them do. He did nothing that nobody else does when they homer and the idea that he should be beaned just for beating us 2 days in a row is sour grapes. A lot of people on this board need to grow up - not saying you, Hardcore. You’re probably just the messenger here but a lot of people here need to grow up. It’s 2 bad losses—yes, but I’m not going to go hang myself. The season isn’t over. We’re 1 whole game behind the Brewers and even if we lose the season series to the Brewers we can still finish ahead of them. Everybody here needs to get a grip!

K-Mac has given up 6 HRs this seaon

Four when the game was tied, one when we were ahead by one, and one when we were ahead by 4. The one that he gave up when we were ahead by one was followed three pitches later with one that gave the other team (Royals) the lead

that's because

he mostly pitches when the game is tied or close. He rarely pitches in blowouts. Therefore, the homers he gives up will occur in close games. It’s too many homers, yes but let’s not start labeling him a choker b/c he’s given up most of his homers in tie games.

It just feels like it because he's given up some gut-wrenching HRs this year

Community Guidelines

by azruavatar on Jul 22, 2008 11:10 PM EDT reply actions

we need to have the community guidelines up for every game anymore

How about people just stop getting pissed at others on here when they are clearly venting? I think we should all be able to agree with that. If people can’t do that this is going to be one hell of a long final two months

* sarcasm might be involved in this comment

by mattyfrommo on Jul 22, 2008 11:14 PM EDT up reply actions

If you'll read the community guidelines

it’s not a place for venting. To quote:

Criticizing the cardinals: well-reasoned criticism is always welcome. some of us will disagree with it and rush to defend the home team, but the community almost always benefits from a critical point of view. however, nobody benefits from infantile ravings; these are not welcome. what are “infantile ravings”? they’re comments or diaries posted in the heat of the moment for no reason except to vent frustration. for example: if La Russa makes a questionable pinch-hitting decision that doesn’t work out, comments such as “FUCK YOU LA RUSSA !!!” or “You moron Tony! You couldn’t manage a little-league team!” are infantile ravings. a comment like: “Can anybody explain to me what the hell Tony was thinking there?” would be an acceptable expression of frustration - the sort of thing a grown-up might say. before you blast away with a critical post, ask yourself these questions:

what is my true motive in posting? there’s a difference between making a critical point and pounding your fists on the floor. if all you have to offer is the latter, do not post.

can i back up my criticisms with some evidence and a line of reasoning? when scott rolen struggled early in the 2006 playoffs, we got dozens of angry rants about how rolen is a habitual choker with a longstanding history of playoff failure. those posts were factually untrue and easily disproven; they detracted from the discussion about rolen’s struggles, rather than adding to it. don’t post criticism that you can’t back up; but if you can back it up, bombs away.

does my post attempt to explain why a given player (or the whole team) sucks? to stick with the rolen example: we all got aggravated watching rolen pop out 36 times in a row, so posts like “rolen —DFA that piece of junk” added nothing at all to the discussion. but it did make for good discussion when people advanced theories about why he kept popping up -- “he’s lengthened his stride” or “he’s trying to pull every pitch.” and it made for interesting discussion when people debated whether or not the team should bench him, move him down in the order, or just leave him alone and ride out the slump.

does my post convey a sense of humor? making fun of a player’s (or the team’s) struggles with humor - even bitter, barbed humor - can be entertaining. it helps our collective blood pressure drop; it also demonstrates a healthy and mature sense of perspective.

by chuckb on Jul 23, 2008 9:31 AM EDT up reply actions

well what do you know

there is a difference in venting styles though. Who here hasnt vented a little? The trouble is when you go around throwing out insults to other members of the community, not when you vent by saying Ryan Franklin is not a good closer, no? If not I am in big trouble here. I think most if our venting has been in the critical point way and not the infantile rant part.
I will make sure not to use that line anymore

I think the team should just stand pat & wait for the reinforcements of

Wainwright & Carp & see how they pan out, they may not help at all, albeit for wishful thinking. As BAD as the pen has been to date, you would think that at least a few of the horrible losses that have happened this season would go the other way in our favor as things always seem, or should during the course of a season. This pen IS bad, and I’m not absolving their performance, but these guys should (could) at least be serviceable 1/2 of the time. A few tweeks, especially for a guy like KMac, and maybe it works out without selling the farm for a rental when this year has been kind of a bonus for the fans anyway.

No disrespect

but I don’t think I’ve ever laughed once at anything Monty Python has ever done. I know people love ‘em, but I just don’t get Brittish humoUr.

Anyway, I cringed at the thought of coming here, and low an behold it was as bad as I thought it would be. Sell off everything, and implode the entire works! Really? Wasn’t “sit tight” supposed to be the plan for this year? And weren’t most VEBers in favor of that plan? I guess I just don’t get the consternation over this. Does it suck? Yeah, but they’ve looked like shit at times this year and then they’ve won games we never thought they’d win. Yet they’re still only 2 games out of first (with the cubs losing in the bottom of the 7th inning) and have still outplayed the best team in the league since the all-star break.

I just don’t get it. Is it a surprise that this team disappoints in really inopportune times? Is it? I guess I had an idea of what this team was at the beginning of the season and while they’ve over-achieved my expectations, and losses like this really disappoint and frustrate me, I still don’t get the point of making fun of LaRussa and DeWitt and Mo. This team had holes from day one and I though we all knew what they were. Too many holes to adequately fix in one offseason which is why I think we all accepted the “sit tight” mentality (which I though we all felt was actually a breath of fresh air?). Btw, cubs now down 5-1.

Whatever. I’m going to bed. And I’ll sleep fine because I know that in the morning, when I wake up the Cards will be at worst 3 games out of first. I can deal with that.

Oh. and at the time of this writing, Lou is going to the pen AGAIN still trying to get out of the 7th inning.

Yeah I agree

When the Brewers got Sabathia they became a whole different team and they are playing like it. The Cubs are showing they have a hard time scoring on the road and are not running away with the Central by no means now. I really don’t think they are too worried about us (The Cards) because even Stevie Wonder can see our bullpen is killing this team… But they had better be worried about the Brewers…who have become a mighty hungry team. I think the Brewers will win the Central. With the Cubs road game heavy September schedule they might not even make the playoffs and the Wild Card could come from the NL East.

I can see them blowing it in September
