funny stuff from brewcrewball
they have been attempting to quantify grit--something that has been discussed a VEB . . . check out this post and the ones it links to . . .

after reading these excellent posts on an overlooked statistical category, i decided to check on the person who (over at vivaelbirdos) defines grit--just to see how he stacked up to the the brewers "mr. grit" so i took a look at aaron miles. after the exit of eckstein, miles has become the cards gritty player--he even has the facial hair. i crunched the numbers and followed the formula to the best of my ability and came up with a secondbasemen for the KUG all stars. miles came in with a KUG of 32.135. his GRIT+ was 73. plus, he is short!

That is hilarious
Eckstein, of course, being a top 5 member of the All-MLB list. I suppose Miles didn’t make it because he is a bench player. But doesn’t that make his performance all the, you know…grittier?

Read this, from his Unified Theory of Grit
The UTG is based off a simple measure, the Kendall Unit of Grit(KUG) which is the amount of grit that Jason Kendall emits while at rest, ie mowing the yard, getting his hair cut or just normal everyday stuff. He is the basis because his grit ranking is the highest in recorded history for at rest measurements. There are rumors that their is another being that can emit more grit, the Ecksteinosaurus, but this has never been verified. The closest we have ever come to the Eckstenosaurus in captivity is the Davidecksteinosaurus which is its smaller cousin. While impressive in its own right, the Davidecksteinosaurus is only capable of about .85 KUGs. It has been extrapolated that a full grown Eckstein could be capable of 1.3-1.4 KUGs, but for right now that is just idle speculation.

ya but i thought the reason guys like miles were gritty
had to do with the fact they arent all stars really. Kendall at one time was a pretty good hitter/catcher. Not sure what their def of grit is. Funny stuff at any rate.
I can't believe i gave up a homerun to that punch and judy hitter-major league 2

Funniest part
is in the comments, when one of the guys refers to Joey Gathright as “The Sandman” because, well, “what could be grittier?”

Grit does not possess speed
I love that nickname and am half-tempted to steal it for GRIT Miles, but we must make clear that gritty players do not possess a single “plus” skill. Gathright’s plus skill would be his speed. I very much liked their post suggesting a punishment for stolen bases. It would be a perfect way for weeding out speedsters, just as the XBH factors weeds out powerful hitters. Speed requires a well-oiled machine and we all know, grit does mix with oil.
