Game 100 Overflow 2/Postgame

Go Cards ! Go Cards!

Grand slam by Aaron Miles on a 2-1 count!!!! Cards win 9-5!

The Cardinals are late-inning wonders so far in the 2nd half --- 4 runs in the 8th inning the other night, 7 runs after the 8th inning today. But Isringhausen . . . . . great run but it's over, big guy.

Use this thread to talk about whatever you want. That was a helluva game! The team is 14 games over for the first time all year.

Arthur Rhodes?

to address bullpen issues

Fuentes? Too much.
Marte? Probably too much.

Rhodes or John Grabow from PIT seem to be great fits – give up someone like Reyes or some other player the brass have obviously given up on, and try to make it work.

Easiest way to improve the bullpen

Either DL or DFA Izzy (I’d prefer the former) and call Mather back up. We don’t need 13 pitchers, but we do need a RH bat to spell Skip.

not really

had more to do with the semi-short appearances our starters were making.

by Tackle Box on Jul 21, 2008 1:48 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I can't argue that point too much

but I will say it is 70-30 short appearances by starters and suckiness of bullpen. There are just some pitchers out in the pen that can’t be effective with even full rest. Flores will have to prove me wrong before I change my mind on him, and Izzy? I love Izzy, but he just about looks done.

by the way

that game kind of solidified a belief i’ve had for quite some time now re: the usage of closers. in my opinion, saving hoffman for the hypothetical save situation was stupid in that they brought in a lesser pitcher in a tighter situation and lost the game. i understand the need for roles in a bullpen, but at the same time i’m a firm believer in using your best player when the situation demands it.

okay

what are our options?

in house: iz2 is a defensive upgrade, but you want miles bat in the lineup right now and miles has actually been a better shortstop than second baseman this year. bRyan, meh, he isn’t doing much right now and once again you gotta play the hot bat in miles.

there really isn’t a trade we can swing for a significant upgrade over iz2/ryan/miles at this point.

and i know everyone wants an arod/reyes/ramirez stud shortstop…but what is so bad about a defensive specialist in iz2? last time we had a stud defensive specialist i don’t recall anyone bitching and moaning quite as much as this time around.

from wiki

In spring training of 2000, several of his teammates from the Houston Astros organization were in their hotel room when two gunmen burst in. Miles was in the next room and the gunmen went in to get him. The cops showed up before they were able to take him to their getaway car and one fled. The other forced him back into his room where he ended up wrestling the gunman to the ground. The other players involved were Morgan Ensberg, Derrek Nicholson, Keith Ginter, Mike Rose, and Eric Cole.

More of the story

“When a wave of cop cars screeched into the parking lot, the man in the ski mask - a convicted felon named Richard Cook - jumped two stories to the street and temporarily escaped. But the burglar in the green bandanna, Alexander Williams, wasn’t bailing. He shoved Miles back into his room at gunpoint. The police escorted Ensberg and the others out of their room and down to the parking lot, and dug in for a standoff. For 25 minutes, the crook had a gun to Miles’ head, until the 5-foot-8 infielder, the son of a heavyweight boxer, took matters into his own hands.

He attacked the 5-foot-11, 175-pound intruder, and during the struggle, Miles bit Williams on the forearm while Williams bit Miles fiercely on the upper back. Both had their hands on the gun, and eventually, with Miles lying on top of the burglar, a SWAT policeman who’d broken through a window had no choice but to fire six close-range gunshots.

“We’re downstairs in the parking lot, and you hear this, pop-pop-pop-pop-pop-pop,” Ensberg says. “And we’re like, ‘Aaron’s dead.’ ” But the cop hadn’t missed, wounding Williams once in the face and five times in the upper torso. The burglar was still alive, but some of his teeth had literally been shot out of his mouth. Miles bolted through the broken window and down to the parking lot, straight into the arms of his teammate Rose.”

I saw a picture of the bitemark on Miles’ back once somewhere, but I can’t find the link.

Gather 'round, then

As a minor-leaguer in the Houston farm system, Aaron Miles was sharing a two-room suite at a hotel in Florida with fellow teammates Morgan Ensberg, former Cardinal and switch-hitting catcher Mike Rose, and a few other players.

Miles had gone out to dinner with his uncle who lived nearby—his teammates stayed behind to relax at the hotel rooms. They left the doors open to catch some evening breeze when two armed men burst in, forcing the players into one of the rooms of the suite and securing their wrists with zip-ties. The criminals stole everything they could in the place then argued over whether to kill the players or not, who had seen their faces.

They had thrown blankets over the players and Ensberg, hearing their conversation, worked the blanket off his head, thinking that if these men were going to kill him, they’d know they were shooting at a man and not a pile of blankets.

Aaron Miles returned home during the criminals’ argument and entered his hotel room, the one that the players were not being held in. Hearing him return, one of the criminals went to attack him through the door adjoining the rooms. Miles fought back, wrestling for the gun. The other criminal ran off and escaped by jumping from the second-floor walkway.

One of the imprisoned players worked free of his bindings while Miles was fighting with the remaining bastard and called the police, who arrived quickly. A policeman with a shotgun smashed open the window to the room that Aaron Miles was wrestling with the bastard using his shotgun stock. Miles had gotten bit on the arm and was biting free a chunk of the criminal’s shoulder.

His fellow teammates had been evacuated by the police and were in the parking lot when the policemen who’d smashed the window fired shotgun blasts into the face and chest of the man Miles had been fighting. They thought he was dead until he sprang from the window, the other man’s blood running down his face.

Morgan Ensberg is understandably paranoid about his family’s safety after this incident. In Aaron Miles’ dreams, he always kicks the guy’s ass.

His father was a boxer.

That’s the story, as related from memory of reading it years ago.

for some reason i thought Padres 4 wasn’t on the DTV EI package today. weird. so i only saw the last 4 at bats. that was crazy fun.

“i really wish they’d stop saying how good of a player Mini Me is. he’s terrible. the only reason he has a job is TLR.”

This team would be on a 7 game winning streak.

It is nice to see that they recovered from that devastating loss by winning 5 in a row. No thanks to our bullpen though.

I think Todd Wellemeyer may be the best option for closer if Carp and Wainwright prove they can come back healthy and be capable starters again.

Row 1 behind catcher

Saw the whole game today from those seats. Unbelievable win. Glaus homer was a no doubter right off the bat. Most exciting moment for me was with a 1-0 count on Thompson watching La Russa summon Yadi from the bullpen (!) to take the at bat. The drama of that trot in from right field was priceless. What followed was almost anticlimactic as Black answered as best he could figure. I think pitching to Yadi was fruitless there as well. When Miles hit the fly ball I knew game over, so clearing the fence was almost an after thought. What a win.

He should be put on the DL

then given a full 30 day rehab assignment and not return until September. When we then have the bullpen to absorb it, he can come up and try to get some saves. I’d make him try to get the first two by pitching 3 innings in blowouts to finish the game.

If he survives that, maybe then put him back in, but as a playoff team…they need to start to consider KMac or Springer as the closer.

honestly, they way i play it is you put your best pitcher in when the situation demands it. i know that trevor hoffman is the padres “closer” but he should have been in there in the 9th, especially after the first guy got on base. i’ve never much been a fan of only using a guy when you closely lead because he is your closer. wouldn’t it be just as valuable to use hoffman in the 9th and shut down the cards and keep the game tied and give the padres a chance to take a lead in the 10th?

Well, barring a setback

I could actually see Carp coming back August 9th in Chicago, if the team wants to do that.

His rehab starts would be:
July 20 – Springfield
July 25 – Springfield
July 30 – Memphis
August 4 – Memphis

That could all be moved forwards or backwards depending on how he responds.

It just takes away Tony’s temptation to nurse him back to being a closer and forces him to use other alternatives, which is a good thing. Also, won’t our bullpen improve if Waino and Carp come back? Either by starting Carp out of the pen or by moving a current starter to the pen? I’d love to have Blooper back in the pen.

by Ray Lankford on Jul 20, 2008 8:43 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Carp isn't due back for about a month and Wainwright hasn't really thrown yet either

If you didn’t notice, the Cardinals ran out of pitchers today. When it came to the 9th, they had Izzy and Thompson available. I’d say right now, they need as many pitchers as possible and going to 12 pitchers doens’t help a thing.

by Tackle Box on Jul 20, 2008 8:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I actually didn't watch the game today, so I didn't notice

I just noticed Izzy’s wonderful line: 1/3 IP, 3 H, 2 ER to compliment his robust 6.27 ERA.

But you are right, we need as many pitchers as possible—regardless of whether they hurt the team.

by Ray Lankford on Jul 20, 2008 9:04 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Perhaps they could replace deadweight pitchers

Izzy, Flores, Jiminez with guys like Perez, Worrell, etc and they wouldn’t have had to use an extra pitcher today.

Sure, they ran out of pitchers (actually, Springer was getting loose) but they only ran out of pitchers because Flores and Izzy couldn’t do their jobs.

If we had talented pitchers in their place that could actually finish an inning, we wouldn’t have had to use Thompson and KMac and we would have had PLENTY of pitchers left in the pen.

Then what do you do when it ISN’T fixed, cause that ain’t fixing our problems.

I guess it’s one thing to say “If we had talented pitchers in their place…..”. Well, if your aunt had balls she’d be your uncle. Unfortunately the reality of the situation is, we don’t have any quality bullpen arms to replace those guys with. They don't have to be the second coming

of Jesse Orosco, but they should atleast get 2 Major League hitters out an inning, something Izzy has struggled to do his last few outings.

Continuing the status quo because we believe that there isn’t a perfect solution does not solve a problem. All it does is maintain the problem we already have. At least attempting to improve the situation increases your odds of success rather than hoping these guys regress to the mean.

mental

i think his stuff is fine, he’s just putting too much on himself

he needs to relax, not think about the stats, the losses, the wins… he simply needs to throw and believe in himself

honestly, i think he needs to be moved somewhere else… for him and for us… i think he’ll get to 300+, but i’m no longer confident that he’ll do it with us… and i think it’s a big item that is seriously bothering him

i say that because this is the guy that sends congratulation gifts to all the other closers that hit 300… he knows it is a big deal and it’s bothering him

he needs to change the scenery and get back to just playing ball… he does that and the stats will take care of themselves

by BirdsonFire on Jul 20, 2008 9:25 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't know for sure

he looked really good on the first batter. Good enough that people were praising him around here about how awesome his stuff looked, and then he just didn’t locate great to the other hitters.

I just don’t get how people go from raving about his stuff on the first batter and then scream he needs to be dfa’d or whatever a couple batters later especially when that would have been Franklin’s spot had he been fine to pitch. Izzy’s not the closer. Franklin is. We’ve got 13 pitchers on the staff right now and could use 14 with the way the starters have struggled the past few days burning up the pen.

But, I guess I should consider who’s posts I’m reading. I read enough of people proclaiming the game was over after 3 batters, and then when Jimenez came in and then again when Flores came in. Obviously, those weren’t very good predictions even though they were delivered in a matter of fact way.

by Tackle Box on Jul 20, 2008 9:04 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Isringhausen isn't the closer?

LaRussa said Izzy and Franklin will share the duties as the situation dictates. Maybe Izzy isn’t the full scale closer but he’s been given the ball in the 9th twice in the last week and couldn’t get out of it.

Miles

I think it is about time he gets some respect. No more complaining about his starts at SS either. He has proven to be AT LEAST league average defensively. He should start 75% of the games from here out, rather at 2B or SS.

by SoonerfanTU on Jul 20, 2008 9:33 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

If Miles qualified as a 2B

in the National League, his RZR would be the 2nd worst of any 2B. He’d be neck and neck with Ray Durham. He’s surprisingly been above average at SS, which doesn’t make much sense in relation to how bad he has been at 2B.

Dude can hit, though.

by Hardcore Legend on Jul 20, 2008 9:40 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Maybe it just shows.....

that RZR doesn’t mean much? If THAT is the basis of your argument that Miles can’t field, I can’t argue with you, b/c I just don’t put much, if anything, into that. Not everything can be measured in stats/numbers/etc. Watch the games. Like I’ve said for weeks, I can’t remember any balls that Miles didn’t get to, that another SS, say Iz, would have definitely had. And even if there are a handful of balls like that, we’re talking what, 1 ball every 2-3 weeks, or something?

by SoonerfanTU on Jul 20, 2008 9:43 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I do watch every game

in fact, I record every game. Have a DVD of every game since Opening Day 2006.

Miles is an adequate utility guy at SS (this season) but he isn’t a starting SS in this league. He is getting by at 2B because his bat needs to be in the lineup on most days but defensively, he leaves a lot do be desired.

His RZR and OOZ aren’t very good at all for a 2B. They don’t just make up the data.

Carp not too enthusiastic with his outing

very discouraged with his command on his fastball. Says his secondary pitches are all fine and his fastball had been fine in his last simulated game but tonight he struggled with it.

Once his fastball command can be found, he says he will be on the fast track back to St. Louis. He said he experienced NO PAIN pitching tonight, which is what he is really happy about this whole experience.

Says unlike when he had shoulder surgery

and he had full command but no strength, with his elbow, he has had full strength but a lack of command.

At this point I'll definitely take the latter over the former

Lack of command after so long not pitching in a game is expected, right? I’d expect him to be frustrated about the 4 walks, but if he has no pain (and still doesn’t tomorrow and Tuesday) and if he has full strength, then for my money tonight was a great success.

I expect he’ll find his command soon. That’s certainly not based on any particular knowledge or expertise I have, just that he’s Carp – command right now for him seems like more of a mental thing, which he’s great at; or a practice thing, and he’s getting practice. It doesn’t seem like a physical thing (see Mulder, Mark). Again, I’m largely talking out of my ass, but I feel good about him.

The way we are hitting.....

I’d just worry about getting a bullpen arm or two. Maybe a guy like Roberts, but I fear the price would be too high.

Can we agree that the best possible trade this team could make

would be for Roberts + Sherrill from the O’s?

I’m not saying it’s reasonable, because it isn’t, but damn would it be sweet.

Unfortunately it would cost us Rasmus and a whole lot more.

If it would cost us that much

it’s not the best possible trade we could make.

TRUE GRIT

“That’s a feeling I wasn’t sure I was going to get to experience, that walk-off homer,” Miles said. “But it happened to me. I’d never done it before, not in the Minor Leagues or anywhere, so it’s a great feeling.”

“Fantasy Island,” manager Tony La Russa called the win.

Boss, D'Plane

D’Plane!

What, was that Tone’s way of getting back at Mini-Miles?

last 4, actually

Tommy Herr had just 2 home runs in 597 PA’s in 1987.

Wow, Freed also only had 2 HR’s (in 36 PA’s!) in 1979, his last year in MLB.
