Game 100 Open Thread: July 20 2008

San Diego Padres @ St. Louis Cardinals

baek garcia
2-5, 5.25 0-0, 0.00

the padres acquired baek from seattle earlier this year. he's got extremely good control but not a whole lot else going for him. you'd anticipate a slugfest, based on who the two starting pitchers are . . . . . but how often have our anticipations proven out this year? the final score will probably be 2-1.

If we won 2-1 then I'd be fine with it and happy Garcia did well

but if we lost 2-1, i’d be ticked. Pujols or no Pujols, this lineup can score more than 1 run agains Baek and the Pads.

yeah i'd be pissed as well

espcially considering TLR can use AP in any situation he wants today.

With you, bro

I’m really excited about Jaime Garcia starting. He went to high school at Sharyland in Mission, Texas. Looks like he’s filled out quite a bit, or maybe he spent extra time in the weight room after hurting the elbow in 2007.

Maybe I should say

I hope Backe sucks less than Dempster today…25-24 final score (Houston of course)

Cubs already up 1-0

Why doesn’t Backe just sign with the cubs. Everything would be much simpler.

Hung one to D-Lee

Good thing he found the deepest part of the park, or it would be 2-0

bah

edmonds won’t stop hitting for them. i know his average is still dismal but he always seems to be driving in runs and popping homers.

Gotta dump the free extra innings feed for mlb.tv

I simply can’t listen to Matt Vasgersian (unless he’s accompanied by Mark Grace) especially since it’s obvious this is broadcast in HD but the non-hd cable feed cuts off parts of the screen, that shouldn’t be cut off.

by Tackle Box on Jul 20, 2008 2:03 PM EDT   0 recs

he's terrible

but isn’t Ricky Horton the alternative?

my computer screen is like 15” and my TV is 28” and includes a couch, so unfortunately the TV wins out today.

I have a love/hate relationship with the Cardinals' middle relief corps.

by madding on Jul 20, 2008 2:09 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Honesly

the HD Channel 5 feed on mlb.tv (on only 800k) is better quality than whatever they’re trying to do with the feed on Extra innings. And, yeah, I’d rather listen to Ricky Horton and whoever is in the booth.

Never been a fan of Vasgersian.

by Tackle Box on Jul 20, 2008 2:11 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Vasgersian

I remember intensely disliking the guy, and I thought I was going to hate him watching on Fox yesterday, but he actually was OK. Mark Grace is a pretty entertaining color guy…..he had a funny story about pulling off a successful hidden ball trick against Mike Scoscia, who then swore at him the entire time Grace was up to bat the next time…..

by nota bene on Jul 20, 2008 2:18 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I just remember Vasgersian

from those 989 Sports video game commercials where he would host a fake “Sportscenter”. never knew he was a real broadcaster until the last couple of years.

they sort of fixed the blown-up HD screen problem after the first few minutes. I can see why Extra Innings almost never uses their feed.

I have a love/hate relationship with the Cardinals' middle relief corps.

by madding on Jul 20, 2008 2:18 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

It's nice to see it in HD...

I was wondering what the issue was…

I’ve got Claiborne and Moonman on the radio, with the San Diego TV feed on mute. The XM audio feed lags the video by about 10 seconds, but it’s an acceptable solution to hear Shannon call the game.

no Pujols

what sorcery is this?

by madding on Jul 20, 2008 2:05 PM EDT   0 recs

did you see

the pads lineup? i think they are giving their entire MLB squad off and starting their AAA team. we should be fine.

by lopey986 on Jul 20, 2008 2:08 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I've seen their lineup

in Portland a few times this year already.

I have a love/hate relationship with the Cardinals' middle relief corps.

by madding on Jul 20, 2008 2:10 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

just giving the guy a day off?

I’m sure he’ll pinch hit…..

by nota bene on Jul 20, 2008 2:19 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Phenom?

The mlb.com homepage has scrolling storylines and refers to Garcia as the “Cardinals Phenom.”

Anyone out there agree with that assessment? Maybe we did last year, but that seems like an overstatement at this point.

Anyway, I’ll throw my prediction in like so many have already done:
Garcia: 6 innings, 3 walks, 5 Ks, 5 hits, 2 ER

My first memory of Cardinals baseball is seeing Darrell Porter jump into Bruce Sutter's arms on October 20, 1982!

He would have fell down and it would have only been a double.

by Evilfrog on Jul 20, 2008 2:24 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

naw

being as dunc is what almost a foot taller, that would been an easy catch

by FunkeeC on Jul 20, 2008 2:26 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

he'd have

misplayed it…would’ve waited for it to bounce off the wall rather than try to make the catch.
