evereyone love dan and al?

Hey how is everyone, i'm a new guy and i'm gonna try to not sound stupid, but when i turned the tv to fsn in st. louis, i noticed that our good old friends Dan and Al had gone mute. Naturally i enjoyed the two innings or so in which there was nothing but crowd noise and the sound of ball hit bat. However it got me thinking about another topic.

Do St. louis fans generally like Dan and Al on FSN?

Just one man's opinion

but no I do not care for then. Dan is alright but usually sounds bored and disinterested. Al is just dumb and I get the impression that he hates his job.

I get the impression he hates Dan

and likewise. They remind me of the crotchetty old couple on the airplane next to me bickering all the way to florida.

But I think they are two of the best personalities on the air.

Dan and Al

Dan is OK.

Al is surprisingly ignorant of things like hitting, and some aspects of pitching, and just regurgitates the conventional wisdom.

All of this is surprising given that the XMO camera often points out that what they say is wrong.

I must be in the minority,

because I love listening to Dan and Al. I live in Miami, Florida, and have to watch all the games via Extra Innings or MLB.tv. Most of the time, I’ll get the home team telecast, so I get to hear all the announcers from all over the league. Our FSN Midwest gang is one of the better ones. Besides, I think they’re hilarious together. Also, I think Dan is great during his in-game interviews.

i agree

i go to college in virginia, so i’m subjugated to the horrible announcers on MASN. it’s like they went to a retirement village and plucked two of the residents and put them in the booth. i love it when i can get home and listen to dan and al just because is reminds me of home. the only thing better is watching a sunday afternoon game with mike shannon and jay randolph talk about cold frosty busch bavarian. classic cardinal baseball.

I like them.

I guess I dont know what people are looking for in their commentary…I have yet to hear someone name an announcer and the commenters jump in and say “oh yeah! that guy is AWESOME.” I like Dan. I like Al. I like when Dan makes fun of Al. I like when Dan makes fun of Al and AL doesnt even notice it. They are better than most. except Vin Scully.

Check out a FSN Arizona Broadcast.

Mark Grace and Daron Sutton. Hh yeah! those guys are AWESOME!..

Seriously though, very entertaining.

Al is pretty unbearable. For being a color commentator, he does not provide much color.

I think Dan has potential, but when he is paired up with Al i find the announcing to be pretty boring.

I REALLY like listening to 'Zona games for that reason

Actually, I really liked Grace and Brenneman, but Sutton and Grace is still good. Lots of people don’t like them case Grace is silly and talks about whatever the hell he wants to talk about, but I actually get a kick out of it. My personality just fits and accepts that goofyness.

he called Todd Helton a steriod user.

by Tackle Box on Jul 3, 2008 1:25 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Actually...

Actually, he said that Don Baylor told him that Helton “tried it but then got off the juice because he didn’t need it.” Baylor later confirmed that he told Hagin this on an ESPN interview. So, really, hagin just related what Baylor told him. Probably not the best thing to bring up on the air, though.

My $.02

Dan is ok, I think he tries to be objective and just call the game, but he’s kind of a monotone. He’s gotten a lot better with that though over the years.

Al is a windbag of the highest order. He’s convinced of his own intelligence and seems to have the idea that he was was the greatest reliever ever. I’m not a fan of him. However, he’s better than “Shades” Shannon and Randolph, who are utterly intolerable.

Someday, someone will figure out the technology to match up radio to tv,and I can both watch and listen to a game with Shannon, in pure, unadulterated joy.

I have never met anyone in my age group (mid 20’s/ early 30’s) that has disliked Shannon. I honestly believe it has as much to do with his story telling (he’s random and hilarious) as it does growing up with him and jack. There is a large part of Cardinals history that a lot of us grew up with (the 70’s, 80’s early 90’s) that is nearly as recognized at the ballpark as I believe it should (Retire #51, damnit!), but “the man in black,” “Ol’ Irish”, Mr Shannon is still there; entertaining us and telling us about a baseball game while he does so.

Maybe I miss a pitch or two, something that hary kalas or Vin Scully would have mentioned, but I don’t think I’ve ever heard an announcer as entertaining as Mike Shannon.

Well who the hell can see forever?

Hey now!

I’m not that much older than you (I’m 37), and I know tons of people who can’t stand Shannon. I expect to know what is going on with the game, the one on the field, and don’t feel like listening to diatribes about a meal he had once, or a crappy play someone made in 1972, or how no one wears the right sunglasses anymore. I guess it’s just a personal preference thing, as some want to be entertained and others are entertained by the game and insightful commentary. It all makes me miss Jack Buck that much more. But hey, I won’t hold it against you if you like Shannon, seeing as how he’s STILL an improvement over Randolph!

I love Shannon...

I think he should replace Al in the booth, because you could watch the game AND listen to his stories. A lot of times during day games, when I’m at work, I’ll click the TV in my office on and mute the game while listening to Shannon and Rooney on the streaming radio. I would prefer that if I’m not going to get analysis then I should at least get some entertainment value out of that booth.

As long as we’re on announcers, can ESPN just put Hershiser and Shulman together and make that their #2 booth? Stop putting know-it-alls like Sutcliffe and Phillips in there as a wing nut—they just end up sounding stupid when compared to a great baseball mind like Orel.

ESPN

...is sorely lacking on respectable announcers for baseball. I like Hershiser, Shulman, and Mike Patrick is tolerable for the CWS. Kruk is occasionally funny, but is mostly a cliche-spitting fat man.

Morgan, Phillips, Eric Young, Sutcliffe (aka The Creep)...all awful. I’m shocked the Mets got to the WS with Phillips as their manager, and Morgan is as bad in the booth as he was great on the field. But hey it’s not like they’re the Worldwide Leader in Sports…oh, wait…

morgan and miller

i can barely watch espn broadcast games. for three hours it’s just joe morgan talking about stuff he used to do and how it was in his days, and miller just agrees with him. joe spent at least 17 minutes talking about how there’s technically no such thing as a check-swing in the rules. then something would happen and he’d just go back and say, “yeah, but there’s actually no such thing as a check-swing…”

thankfully the cardinals are on espn so rarely, because of course the entire country wants to see red sox-yankees, red sox-rays or cubs-anyone.

They're OK

Dan does something really annoying though. Anytime a Cardinal hits a fly ball, even if it’s only moderately deep, he uses his “might be, could be!” voice. It gets really irritating sometimes. The thing I like best about Al is his ongoing man crush on Reggie Sanders: “Just look at that smile…it’s made for TV.” That was always fun to hear.

by jdub176 on Jul 3, 2008 1:04 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I think Dan's actually improved on that over the years

Sure he’ll say that the ball is deep, but he rarely gets overly excited for a ball that doesn’t reach the track, at which point some excitement is justified.

Chip Carey, on the other hand, still seems to shout loudly even on balls that are caught well in front of the track.

by bailorg on Jul 3, 2008 1:50 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think Dan and Al are at worst average

Dan’s nothing spectacular, but he’s still relatively young for a play-by-play guy, so he still has plenty of room to improve.

As far as Al goes, I can understand how people can have wildly different views on him. He’s a complete, unabashed homer who’ll grasp at any straw to defend the powers that be in the Cards’ organization, but on the other hand, he doesn’t take himself or the game too seriously while still maintaining a proper level of respect for the game.

Strictly as an analyst, Al isn’t exactly great, but then again, there very few people who are good TV analysts. And I’d still gladly hear’s Al’s take on a situation over many people in more prominent broadcast teams.

Can’t say the same for Joe Buck who would rather watch a soap opera or some reality show.

by KYCards on Jul 3, 2008 3:12 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Totally disagree...

Joe calls the game as it’s meant to be called on TV—he’s in the background, narrating the play, but not getting overly excited about routine plays and not talking ALL THE TIME. His dad was one of the best on the radio because you could tune in and feel like you were there; Joe is the best because he doesn’t interfere with the game by talking all the time, a la Costas.

I think they enjoy...

calling a good game much the same as we prefer watching a good game. They kind of rise to the occassion and are better than many.

So few great announcers, so many games.

In a slow, boring or one sided game, Al often lapses into his “droning stream of consciousness snore-casting” where he’s mumbling like Shaq seemingly forever about something remotely related to pitching philosophy until some event on the field or Dan abruptly cuts him off. If the camera were on them, I’d bet Al’s eyes are closed and Dan is rolling his trying to stay awake and figure how to flip Al’s drone switch off.

Good ole’ Al single handedly got me Edmonds, Renterias and Walkers autographs on a BP ball after a game while he was waiting to do an interview with Edmonds. He did that on his own accord, didnt even ask him. He was just being a good guy while he was waiting in line for Edmonds. He asked me if I wanted a “Hall of Shamer’s” autograph on the ball too, meaning of course….the Hungo.

I just don't like how they treat the audience like they are stupid

we can clearly see what is happening on the field (even though you aren’t talking about it) and then when they DO talk about it, they will sugar coat it until the last possible second. Finally they will relent (Dan – “Yeah, you just can’t give up 6 walks and 2 grand slams in one inning. But these Cards are scrappy.” Al – “Right, and that’s all you can ask of a ballclub. Play a Hard 9 down 17 runs and not walk off the field mid game. Hey, how’s Luke?”)

They are slightly better than that drone Darren Sutton, both the guys on FSN Milwaukee, the Cubs television announcers and FSN Pittsburgh. I’d take the STO, SNY, FSN Kansas City, CSN Bay Area, and of course FSN Prime Ticket over Danny (as Chip Carey refers to him) and Al.

I agree...

but less smart people don’t learn anything by hearing the same stupid crap over and over and over again. I get tired of the same baseball cliche’s used for each play. It’s to the point where my buddies and I play a game whenever we get Joe Morgan and McCarver during a game. After each play, the first one to blurt out what each of those guys is going to say next gets a point. Whoever has the least amount of points at the end of the night has to bring the beer for the next gamewatch. It’s really sad when the winner ends up with 20+ points—at that point, why not just get drunk John Q Public up there to analyze?

Cardinals Apologists

That’s what I’d call them, HC. Adam Kennedy hits a groundball that happens to find a hole and “he’s turned it around.” If Tony makes a pitching move that blows up, it’s somehow justified as some kind of psychological stroke of genius. Rick Horton is the only one on the FSN crew who consistently holds their feet to the fire.

As for guys in the booth, I actually enjoy Bob Brenley for the same reasons. He does a little of what made Steve Stone so great to listen to – consider the strategies the team could employ and question them when they make a stupid move. (And when you’re doing Cubs games, you’ve got plenty of fodder. Boo-Yah! Take that!)

by bgodar on Jul 3, 2008 11:40 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Bob Brenly

doesn’t know what he is talking about. The moves Brenly questions are the right moves and then gives a stupid move as an example of what he would have done. He has to be the WORST MANAGER TO EVER WIN A WORLD SERIES. I don’t even know if Dusty Baker could have screwed that one up.

I can't attest to his managing because I don't watch AZ...

But, I think Brenly is great in the booth. He doesn’t get over-excited like Santo, he plays well off Len Kasper (which I think less of,) and he always has stories to share of his playing days, or a relative tip that the average fan may not know about the upcoming or previous play.

by fanofthegame on Jul 6, 2008 6:51 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

His stories aren't even right...

Today (since my cable carries Comcast Chicago instead of FSN-MW), he told a story of how a player from his 2001 team didn’t want to accept a minor league assignment, but did reluctantly, and played in one game and took himself out halfway through the game.

He said it was a very high profile veteran, but he didn’t want to name names.

I was curious who it was, so I played around on baseball-reference.com and looking at their minor league stats, there wasn’t a single player during his entire managerial career on any level of Arizona’s minor league system who only appeared in one game.

Al is certainly not a good commentator, but compare him to other color guys out there: The previously mentioned Bob Brenly, Joe Morgan, Tim McCarver….

Al looks pretty decent when you put him in a class with them.

by mtalken on Jul 6, 2008 8:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Al is THE ultimate 'homer' announcer

He is the eternal optimist and the most annoying in his analysis of the game. He is forever putting more spin in his commentary than a Bruce Sutter split-finger fastball. He says things like (and I do exagerate here a bit): “If you’re going to strike out like Chris Duncan just did, the best way to do that is on three straight pitches” or “Troy Glaus popped up again, but if you measured the distance the ball traveled up in the air, that was probably a homerun” or “Aaron Miles is just as good as Chase Utley, it’s just that none of the numbers – like batting average or on base percentage – works out in Miles’ favor.” You know, stuff like that.

As for Dan, his voice just sort of grates on me after listening for an entire game. The tone of his voice is like a cheese grater for the ears.

Better than that Rooney guy on the radio side, though. That guy is clown, and I don’t mean that in any good way whatsoever. His inflection and intonatations cause me to have epileptic-like cringes.

I was prepared not to like them

but as a subscriber to MLB Extra Innings for the past season and a half and an avid Cardinals fan, I am always relieved when I get to see an FSN Midwest broadcast. My first impression of Dan was that, yeah, he’s pretty boring, monotone and disinterested. And Al obviously plays the role of the blowhard extremist. But they are generally pretty entertaining, especially when you least expect it. And comparing them to most teams’ announcers makes them stand out. I won’t say they are anywhere near the legendary class that Vin Scully and a few select others are in, but I enjoy the way they call the game in the current “we are team employees so we always put the best shine on things” way that most regional broadcasts are these days.

I think my least favorite announcing teams, in order, are:
White Sox, Cubs, Marlins, Giants, Yankees (mostly because of Michael Kay)

Anyway, I think Dan ‘n Al are comfort food. Certainly not gourmet, but not Top Ramen, either…

I have a love/hate relationship with the Cardinals' middle relief corps.

Argh. Joe Morgan. What a waste.

I appreciate the tone and the casual feeling of Joe Morgan. And then you listen to him. He’s a flippin’ idiot. I mean, he inspired firejoemorgan.com (very funny stuff there). I once heard Joe Morgan say that wins is the better indicator of a pitchers true ability rather than ERA, because a “W” behind a pitcher’s name means he was really able to gut out a performance and because the other players on the team didn’t have as much influence to a pitchers “win” as it did ERA. Joe Morgan causes me to lose faith in the concept of universal common sense.

I totally agree with 'Madding'

Like him, I am a new subscriber to Extra Innings and am thrilled just to be able to see so many Cardinal games. I go way back to the days of Harry Carey, and nobody will replace Harry. He was in a class by himself and I was sick when the Cards let him go and he wound up with the Cubs.

As far as Dan and Al go, I’m always glad to hear them because, frankly, they’re “homers” like most announcers and it’s nice to have someone rooting for my team. As for excitement, no it’s not there but they do have a very good dry sense of humor and I love it when they start getting on each other. They are a bit too low-key but, in my area, I don’t always get the Cards broadcasts because of several blackout teams and I find I miss them. I also think Dan would be better with a more dynamic sidekick.

The best announcers I’ve heard are the Mets guys – Gary Cohen, Keith Hernandez and Ron Darling. I also like Tom Brennaman with Cincinnati and Mark Grace with Arizona. The most aggravating voice on the air is Michael Kay of the Yankees.

I have been thankful for so many years...

that the Cardinals do not have the Braves/White Sox people in the booth.

From the former players category, I like what Orel Hersheiser, Harold Reynolds, John Kruk, and Mark Grace have to offer to a game. Jeff Brantley isn’t bad at times either.

Steve Stone and Thom Brennaman also seem to do a good job.

I can’t stand Bob Brenly/Tim McCarver/Joe Morgan/John Miller/Steve Phillips/Steve “Psycho” Lyons.

by Jumsy on Jul 3, 2008 8:44 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

agreed on Braves/White Sox

Can’t stand either of those two teams.

However, I can’t stand Harold Reynolds or John Kruk. Cliche, Cliche, Cliche. They’re boring and tired, and it’s obvious that they don’t do any homework—which is another thing I cannot stand from someone getting paid to analyze games.

Orel and Grace are great—Grace has a fantastic personality and always has interesting things to say, but he’d be best in a three man booth where he adds color and another guy analyzes.

Don’t hate on Jon Miller until you listen to him on the radio for the Giants. He’s fantastic. On ESPN he just has to cover for the fact that Joe Morgan is a simpleton and also doesn’t do any homework. Morgan admitted in an interview a few years back that he doesn’t prepare for games because he “likes to call things as he sees them”—I guess that’s code for “if I don’t know anything about the two teams playing, I can make vague references to things that aren’t correct, but because I don’t know any better they can’t fire me for it”

I disagree about

your thoughts on Reynolds. He will “predict” what call a manager will make, and if it is not the same as his choice, will explain why he feels that his decision would be better in the situation. It just adds another perspective to what is going on in the game.

A little off the subject: I was watching the Red Sox-Rays game last night (on tv, cards game on mlb.tv on my computer) and was questioning a decision in the 7th inning with 1 out, up by 1 (and the pitcher Hansen for Boston had just thrown 3 straight balls then decided to walk to the batter intentionally) that the Joe Maddon PH for Gomes with Gabe Gross. Hansen was obviously struggling, and Boston had Javy Lopez warm in the pen (LH) who has been pitching well lately. I thought it was odd to PH Gross and then leave him in with a Lefty lefty matchup. Gross ended up striking out, and Bartlett bailed him out with a two out single and 2 RBIs. I would have thought you would force Hansen to pitch to the next hitter since he was struggling instead of giving Boston an advantage with Lopez. It seemed like Maddon was playing into Boston’s hand. I was surprised that none of the announcers even questioned the move. Any thoughts?

he is pretty good in the booth because he questions things without making the team mad...

I think he is pretty good….

Most announcers are under team control and can’t say shit anyway.

i'd agree with most

but john miller is good, its a shame he is paired with a dumbass like morgan, his radio games are some of the best

As a general comment

about “analysts,” few of whom do much real analysis, BTW, I pine for the day when I hear an analyst that does not believe he must say something after every pitch. A little blessed silence would be a beautiful thing on a TV broadcast.

I like Dan and Al

I prefer simple announcing that just talks about the game going on, thats one reason I like Dan and Al. Unlike Miller and Morgan who talk about every random stupid thing that I dont give a crap about(mostly Barry Bonds)....then it zooms in on them when they tell a stupid boring story and you miss 3 pitches…........

Shannon is awesome!!!!!!!!!! one time I heard a beer can pop open LOL it made everyone in the room bust out laughing!! Shannon is by far the best.

Sunday Games

Channel 5 does the absolute worst job broadcasting Cardinal games. FSN is head over heels better than their production. From the pregame people that know nothing about baseball to the worst two announcers in all of baseball, Jay Randolph and Rick Horton. Listening to those two guys will give you a headache. Randolph makes so many mistakes and is so unknowledgable about the game its unbelievable. Horton tries to act like he knows everything but makes similar mistakes himself. I would much rather listen to Al or Dan any day of the week.

Sunday games are awful.....It does not get better when Shannon goes in the booth either.

I think Bob Brenly is the best color man out there…...Len Casper is kind of annoying, but I think Bob Brenly and Len Kasper are a pretty darn good tandem.

Bob Brenly is just outstanding

by ICbirdfan on Jul 3, 2008 12:14 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Bob Brenly

doesn’t know what he is talking about. The moves Brenly questions are the right moves and then gives a stupid move as an example of what he would have done. He has to be the WORST MANAGER TO EVER WIN A WORLD SERIES. I don’t even know if Dusty Baker could have screwed that one up.

I know I posted this earlier, but I felt it needed to be said again.

he gives you something to think about. most of the rest are so bland it doesn’t matter whether they speak or not.

compared to most others...

i genuinely like dan and al. i hate the weekends when we are subjected to the horrific jay randolph. but i think he makes almost anyone sound good. as some others have said, i really enjoy dan and al’s sense of humor. it seems this year that the goofiness has increased substantially, especially the banter with jimmy “the cat” hayes. i think maybe a friend was saying they have a new producer? i also think dan has significantly improved into a quality play-by-play man. he seems, to me anyways, like he really enjoys the game and is genuinely excited when big plays happen. al can be tangential and irrelevant at times, but it’s worth it when dan makes fun of him for it. overall, i really enjoy listening to the two. that may be partly due to a comfort level, having listened to them for so many years. but i’ll take them over most.

by bwhitt on Jul 3, 2008 12:12 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I don't like McLaughlin

because I can hardly stand listening to his nasally voice. But I will agree that when him and Al go back and forth heckling each other it’s pretty funny. Both groups of TV announcers are pretty annoying (FSN is much more tolerable than KSDK though). Too bad there is a slight delay with the TV broadcasts because I’d just mute the TV and turn on KTRS during the games.

I guess I’m in the minority when I say I really like Jon Miller. Morgan is horrible, but Miller does a fine job, doesn’t Americanize the pronunciation of foreign names, and I enjoy his home run calls.

by arfuze300 on Jul 3, 2008 1:34 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

ughhhhh

I would listen to the ESPN Deportes announcers over Miller and Morgan anytime….they are so exciting when big plays happens…its like when they have a goal in soccer and they just yell and stretch their yell out for a long time lol its awesome.

Methinks

Dan is ok. Rooney and Shannon better. Al – good days, bad days – but more eh days than anything else. Dan is always good for the seemingly innocuous comment that comes acrosss completely different than he meant it. Dan and Al’s relationship is a draw – they can crack me up in a bad game if they get on each other.

Rooney – solid play by play. His clean voice matches well with Shannon’s gravelly, drowned in an ice cold Budweiser voice. Decent stories, and Rooney knows enough to bring it back to the game when Shannon starts to wander. Shannon is good, ok, but somethimes, ok, he says ok, too much, ok.

Randolf and the other stiffs on Sunday broadcasts – fucking horrible. The 13-inning game against the Red Sox showed just how incapable they are at calling a good game. They need to go back to calling little league or UMSL basketball or some shit. They are like nails on the goddamn chalkboard.

Other announcers/sports guys in StL:
- KFNS morning show: Dorks with dick jokes. eh.
- Hadley: The biggest homer in StL, makes Al look like a single.
- Don’t watch the nightly news, so I have no comments.

Nightly

I don’t know how I missed this thread for two whole days. This irrestistable. Thank you, nextgen. (I know we’ve never met, but I feel familiar enough with you to drop the “the.”)

Dan knows very little about baseball, although he has gotten better. These means that he feels he must deferential to a former player our of respect. The problem is that this means Al’s lack of knowledge and insight is the hallmark of the broadcast. He says baseless, clueless things that are not at all true or supported by any facts or data. Al clearly does very little in the way of prep work. And Dan just lets his statements go. They are not a good duo at all.

One of my friends is a Red Sox fan and he texted me during the Cardinals game (because we live in Iowa and the FSN Midwest broadcast is carried):

r the cards broadcasters always this horrible? they know nothing about baseball. i m sorry you have to listen to this on a nightly basis.

That sums it up.

Dan & Al...

Personally, I think Dan is great. I disagree with the earlier poster who suggested that he comes off as bored and disinterested at times. I listen to quite a bit of radio in STL and the guy even sounds pumped about Cardinals’ baseball when he’s off the job and being interviewed as a guest on local shows. He’s had some great calls this year… and has even been dubbed the “kool-aid man” because of an over-the-top “Oooohhhhh Yeeeeeeaaahhhhhh!!!” call on a Rick Ankiel HR earlier this season. He’s also not afraid to second-guess in-game decisions.

As for Al, he sells bottles of Budlight for $6 at his bar down the street from Busch. Not a big fan; although he does provide convenient comic relief at times.

I think Dan is good too

I think he shows the proper emotion, good or bad. He’s a lot better than he used to be. Al can irritate me though.

Dan and Ankiel

Dan clearly has a serious man-crush on Ankiel. He cannot describe what Ankiel is doing without gushing; he frequently makes egregious mistakes calling an Ankiel play; and he is most quick to imagine excuses for Ankiel’s mistakes.

Dan could be good, but he talks too much and says too little. As for the Mad Hungarian, well, he makes me wish that TV would go for the old-school radio procedure of one man calling the game.

This seems like as good a place as any

I like Shannon as much as the next guy. I grew up listening to him and Buck. But he has to stop nicknaming everybody with some variation of their name and then “man”. He used to do “The So Man”. I thought that was kinda funny. Now this year I have heard “The Izzy Man”, ” The Skip Man”, “The Ank Man”, “The Lud Man”.....I think maybe that’s it but it’s too many. Somebody has to tell him this insanity has to stop!

At least I haven’t heard him say “The Pu Man” yet. If he does that one, I’m writing a letter.

I can hear it now

here to call the 3rd inning…the Roo Man (John Rooney). Gotta love Shannon!

I always thought Dan tried to hard to be

Joe Buck. As in he would always try and throw in a out of the blue reference to pop culture or try too hard to be funny…when he didn’t need to be. I always got the feeling that Dan spent most of his time watching tapes of Joe and to copy his style. And I always found it funny when Joe would do his handful of Cards games for FSMW he would tease Dan or make a wild comment about him to Al. I think Joe knew he was his “idol” and was making the most of it with tongue in cheek stuff.

neutral on dan

but down on al. got extra innings for the first time this year and get to listen to lots of broadcast teams. all i can say for dan and al is that it is better than listening to white sox broadcasts, but there are many better duos out there.

If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs, perhaps you haven't grasped the situation!

Hate Al Hate Al Hate Al!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Al is terrible. He’s a big name dropper. He thinks he was this great part of Cardinal history. He is a clown. I really dislike his arrogance and his shitty attempt at humor. Dan just kisses his ass all day.

some thoughts, rambles

vin scully and harry kalas are the best in the business today. there aren’t a whole lot of others close. of the cardinals folks, i agree, it’s rooney > moonman > dan > al.

one thought: the phillies broadcast team switches radio/tv folks twice during the game (other teams might do this, but i can’t think of any offhand). kalas works the tv feed from innings 1-3, then switches to radio for 4-6, and goes back to tv for 7-9. why the cards couldn’t do something similar for dan/al/rooney/shannon is beyond me. it’d be great to get shannon on the tv broadcast more than just ever so often on sunday games. although i would think listening to dan & al on the radio in more than small doses would quadruple the suicide rate in the st. louis area.

but yes, the kalas gushing. if you ever have the chance or the means, watch/listen to the local broadcast of a phils game. the man is incredible.

go cards, o's, and phillies.

...boiler up.
