Cardinal Outfields under 30 Years Old
Ryan Ludwick - 29
Skip Schumaker - 28
Rick Ankiel - 28
Chris Duncan - 27
Brian Barton - 26
Nick Stavinoha - 26
Joe Mather - 25
Shane Robinson - 23
Jon Jay - 23
Colby Rasmus - 21
Daryl Jones - 21
Play GM here...What would you do with all your 11 twenty-something year old MLB caliber outfielders???
I would start by trading Chris Duncan. Here's why: Mather is a better hitter, fielder, and athlete and also is 2 years younger.
OK...Now we are down to 10. In theory, we would be ok with 10 outfielders (5 in STL and 5 Memphis) by placing Ludwick, Schumaker, Ankiel, Barton, and Mather in St. Louis and having Stavinoha, Robinson, Jay, Rasmus, and Jones in Memphis. In this scenario, there is no reason to promote Jay and Jones so they can continue to get more playing time down in Springfield unless injuries occur. However, they're both AAA caliber.
Now, what would you do for 2009???
You have Ankiel in RF (Arm Strength a key here), Rasmus in CF, and Ludwick, Mather, and Schumaker platooning in LF for St. Louis.
and
You have Jones, Jay, Robinson, Stavinoha, and Barton in Memphis.
WHAT WOULD YOU DO??? I have no idea. Gotta make some trades to make up for the middle infield, starters, and left handed relief.

use 'em as part of trade bait to get reliable relievers
Yes, our abundance of OFs could be used to great advantage for trades. I lhaven’t seen Rasmus but understand he’s the star of the future. However, we don’t know that for sure so, for now, I like the OF of Schumaker, Ankiel and Ludwig. Mather and Stavinhoha show signs they can play in the Bigs, too.
Obviously, we need relief help big-time, especially of the lefthanded variety. I’‘d also like to see second base and shortstop positions decided: once and for all, not switching combos every night.
Listen – in today’s game with starting pitchers only going 5-6 innings usually, the ‘pen is what decides who makes the playoffs and who wins the World Series, so do what you have to do to shore up that area. A John Smoltz-type attitude on the part of one of our starters would help, too, especially since we might have a surplus in that area in 2009.

Ankiel made 900K
this year. He’s arb eligible and is going to get a pretty hefty increase next year being that he started the enitre season at centerfield and hit 20+ homeruns. FWIW

yeah
but it shouldn’t be too hefty unless we see an increase in his Avg. and RBI production. I’m pretty sure he’d want to stay with the cards, too.
Here’s a thought that never comes up: why not trying to deal Ludwick? Sell him while he’s hot. We all know he’s injury prone, and it wouldn’t be a bad risk to take. Obviously, he’d be tough to part with, but he’s the ultimate example of selling high.
On with the (good) youth movement!

"Sell him while he's hot"
That’s what I tried in a fantasy league… no small feat, though, considering he’s got a .698 OPS since June 1.

well
this is assuming he goes on somewhat of a roll again. Right this moment isn’t a good time for obvious reasons.

Amaury Marti
don’t forget about mystery man Amaury Marti who is terrorizing the Mexican league. He is 33 (?), but deserves at least a full year in AAA if not a try out in the majors next year.

Daryl Jones
The man’s at Palm Beach and there’s no indication he’ll be rushed along. I’d expect to see him at Springfield all of 2009 and on the 40-man roster, playing in Memphis for 2010.

Jones
He has a .384 wOBA which is 3rd best in all of the FSL. The two guys ahead of him include a soon to be 24 year old and 27 year old. Quite impressive, to say the least.

Daryl Jones
D.J. is without a doubt a MBL level outfielder in 3 years.

while all of those guys are Potentially productive...
i think its’ a bit premature to call them All MLB quality just yet. Daryl Jones is toolsy and easy for a scout to love…but remember before his breakout this year (which is in A ball mind you, albeit in the pitcher friendly Florida State League)Mr. Jones had put up roughly a .240/320/355 line in the low minors-not exactly sure fire major league quality…although if he proves if at double A next year i’m officially on the bandwagon (not that i don’t like d.j.-what’s not to like—i just like to see him sustain this success at a higher level before reserving a spot at InBev…i mean Busch Stadium for him). also though shane robinson may have a little more track record of success (collegiate baseball’s national player of the year at florida state) this is his first bout of sustained success in the upper minors…so for me he’s also a watch and see…esp. considering his size and the fact that he’s limited to lf…get the point of your post but let’s not count all of the eggs just yet
grow back the beard adam...it couldn't hurt

Agreed.
I’ll even go a step further, and say that I’d bet over half the MLB teams have an OF prospect list similiar to that.

Future Redbirds
...has “A Quick Look at Daryl Jones” that documents his climb. I highly recommend the post as it is both an informative and a quick read. Here’s a blurb:
Jones isn’t as good as his rate line shows right now but he has the potential to put up those kinds of numbers and play some stellar defense. The organization seems to be taking it slow with him, which is the right move given the number of outfielders we have in the upper minors and Jones’ age. The long term outlook is still bright for Jones who has the athleticism to be an All Star outfielder.

If it were up to me
Ludwick would be in the everyday outfield with Rasmus, and Ankiel in 2009. Other than a 2 or 3 week slump that he seems to be coming out of, I think he’s proven that he deserves the job. Schumaker’s fate would be tied to the readiness of Rasmus or the ability to sign Ankiel at a reasonable price. Everyone else is tradeable for a middle infielder or reliever.

Who is coming out of their slump?
It’s kinda vague, but I think you’re talking about Ludwick. And I haven’t quite seen the signs of him coming out of a slump espcially since last night was the first time he’d played in 3 games.
On the other hand, if you’re talking about Ankiel, I agree he’s hit really well the past 10 days or so, but he’s gonna be a streaky hitter and that just comes with Rick Ankiel.

OF Dilemna
A lot depends on what the Cards do with their MI. Assuming Pujols and Wallace/Craig man the corners in the future. They’ll NEED to get a lead-off hitter that plays very good defense at either 2nd base or short stop, preferably 2nd. We all know how hard it is to find a good, young 2nd baseman who can lead-off. Right now, I’d say shop Bryan Anderson around the league for a future 2nd baseman who can lead off and some young starting pitching. My best guess at the future roster.
C: Yadier Molina
1B: Albert Pujols
2B: ?
SS: ?
3B: Brett Wallace
LF: Ryan Ludwick
CF: Colby Rasmus
RF: Rick Ankiel
Starting Pitching
RHP Adam Wainwright
RHP Chris Carpenter
LHP Jaime Garcia

Bullpen
RHP Chris Perez

RHP Josh Kinney
RHP Jason Motte
LHP Tyler Johnson

Batting Order:

Colby Rasmus
Albert Pujols
Brett Wallace
Rick Ankiel
SS
Ryan Ludwick
Yadier Molina
PITCHER
Bench:
C: ?
UTIL: ?
2B/SS: Pete Kozma
OF: Joe Mather
OF: Brian Barton
With that being said, I believe that Mozaliek needs to spend a lot of time investing in MI and arms. If he could get a big bat for SS that is still young and plays really good defense and get a leadoff hitter for 2B, the Cards are in great shape offensively. A 1-2-3 of Wainwright, Carpenter, and Garcia is intimidating, but the 4-5 starters and ‘pen need some work.

We still have Wellemeyer next year?
Don’t we? I know Looper is a FA but I thought for sure we had the Colonel locked up until next year.

Future Lineup
If I’m not mistaken, Wellemeyer has arbitration this year and I believe next year and then he become a free agent. That future lineup was ‘10/’11-ish. I’m not quite sure when Wallace comes, but Allan Craig should be ready just in case. If Wellemeyer keeps pitching like he did before his injury, he’ll get a huge payday. As for Lohse, his payday may be coming pretty soon.
