San Diego Padres @ St. Louis Cardinals

Maddux Looper
3-8, 3.90 9-7, 4.25

will this be the last time greg maddux pitches in st. louis? he has won 14 games in our city, and 26 against the franchise (against 20 losses). one of the best hurlers ever, and one of my favorite players.

interesting lineup

I like it. Ludwick is in the diet-of-fastballs position. Does Tony know something we don’t about Maddux?

Maddux is one of the leaders in FB %

He throws mostly just FBs. My guess as to the player mostly likely to have sucess vs Maddux being Ankiel.

Really liking,

maybe even loving, that lineup.

Here’s a toast to Maddux pitching for another three years or so. He should be an automatic induction into the HOF for what he did during the steroid era. It’s insane.

My fellow Americans. As a young boy, I dreamed of being a baseball, but tonight I say, we must move forward, not backward, upward not forward, and always twirling, twirling, twirling towards freedom.

Maddux is probably my favorite non-Cardinal pitcher of all-time (since I’ve been following baseball, at least :D)

Can't find it

but there was an article a year or two ago talking about how bats have changed over the years. Louisville Slugger made some replica bats to the spec of players from previous eras, including Shoeless Joe’s Black Betsy. Players were swinging ‘em and remarking on how thick the handles were. “Like swinging a two-by-four,” one player said.

Izturis-Wonderbrad-Ryan up. Let’s score some runs, start chipping away!

by liam on Jul 18, 2008 9:29 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

you would think most players would want a thick handle

most aluminum bats have fairly thick handles, plust they taper out near the knob.

by Tackle Box on Jul 18, 2008 9:32 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

My game bat

has a really thin handle—made of ceramic, though.

Every wood bat I’ve used is an antique with the fat handle.

by liam on Jul 18, 2008 9:33 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I always like thinner handles too

but it seems that most nowadays are thicker with that taper. Not sure why batters would change once they go with wood. Granted, you can take weight out of the bat by making the handle thinner, but you’d think it’d be uncomfortablle after playing high school and/or college with a thicker handled aluminum bat.

Do you like those ceramic bats? Think I used one a long time ago. We had a kid on our hs team this year who used one of those Stealth’s. Really strange. Sounded dead when he hit the ball (no ping whatsoever), but man the ball would go.
