Extend Ankiel?
Are the Cardinals looking to extend Ankiel and have him locked up for a while? I know he is a Boras client, and Boras likes to go year to year, but it seems to make sense that the Cardinals try to extend Ankiel for an extended period of time. Ankiel is a fan favorite in St. Louis. I know I will be disappointed if he bolts for another city. Does Ankiel feel that he owes the organization a discount considering they stuck with him through his transition? What kind of extension should he be signed to (years/amount)?
What more does Ankiel have to prove to earn an extension?

so when would this extension start?
how long is he signed for? I had it in my mind that he’s signed through next year. I’m fine with him or Rasmus (although Ank is obviously proven at the MLB level). anyone wanna bet that he’ll be in the home run derby next year?

He is only "signed"...
through this season, but is under team control at least for next year…not sure about 2010. I’d like to think he’d give us a discount, but you can never be too sure about these things. I really don’t think we should talk extension till at least the offseason or mid-season next year.
i believe
he is under control for 2 years after this year because this year was his first arbitration eligable year. since he will go through arb at the end of the year again he will get a hefty raise and then again will get a raise after that. I don’t think the Cards should think about a long term deal for him until sometime next season. He has prooven that he belongs at the big league level, but I’d rather wait and see on Ank since he is such an odd case.

I think the team will have to...
consider going long-term this winter. They’re going to be negotiating with him regardless. If they can come to a fair agreement for one year while avoiding an arb hearing it’d probably be best, but if it’s multi-years or arbitration I’d prefer a three year deal or two with an option.
