The Red Sox bowed out of the Johaan Santana sweepstakes because the Twins wanted Ellsbury, so there is no way a package like that would even be considered.

haha

no way we can pry ellsbury, lowrie and pedroia away from the red sox. rasmus be damned.

Ellsbury

Do you really think he is that much better than Ludwick? If the Red Sox did, don’t you think he would be playing instead of Coco Crisp? This would be sending a lot to get something that is not better than what you have.

How about handin' me another helpin' of those mashed taters...thank you very much!

No

a) The Red Sox really like Ellsbury. Not happening.

b) We don’t need to upgrade in the outfield, and Ludwick is better than Ellsbury.

Just say no to Dustin Pedroia

Hard-nosed ball-player. Product of his home park.

.100 OPS and 25 OPS+ split home vs. away.

tOPS+ is his

split relative to his own line, which is already influenced by his home park. What you want to look at is sOPS+, which is his split relative to average. We can only do that yearly, but his line is better this year away actually. Last year it was the opposite, however, we’re just dealing with two relatively small samples here. He had an away sOPS+ of 97 last year (286 PA) and 128 this year (227 PA).

You’d expect him to hit better in Fenway. Just by the nature of the park and that players generally hit better at home, but it doesn’t look like there’s much to add to his overall park-adjusted 106 OPS+. He carries a good OBP and is certainly an above-average second baseman.

But...

certainly shouldn’t be starting the fucking All-Star game with guys like Ian Kinsler and Mark Ellis out there…

can we please...

... get a moratorium on trade threads for the next month unless a trade actually occurs? or at least until there’s a published rumor with some credibility behind it? i know everyone is just trying to be creative and helpful, but it’s starting to get to be too much.

If they're going to trade anyone,

it’s going to be Coco Crisp.

On with the (good) youth movement!

There must be some OTHER player named ellsbury that plays for Boston

Because why would we even be TALKING about trading for a CF? Lets not forget about the left side of our bullpen, or lack-there-of.

When did this site become a video game/fantasy league trade blog?

That is the most ludicrous trade idea I’ve heard this season. It makes no sense on BOTH sides.
In order for this kind of thing to not happen anymore, please use the following rules in “proposing trades.”
1) The team your team is trading with should be sellers at the deadline. (The only exception to this rule is a swap that can help both teams i.e. Ray Lankford for Woody Williams)
2) Ask yourself why the selling team would be selling this player. (last year on contract, bad contract, surplus of players at that position, prospects ready to play at ML level and current player not playing up to par)
3) Does this trade fill a need with your current team? (Does the acquisition improve your team? Has management stated they are searching for a player of this position? Have on field results revealed a major weakness to your team (weak offensive middle infield)?
4) Are the prospects you are giving up going to benefit the other team? (Will the prospect be blocked by a current star/current prospect playing in ML i.e. trading a 3b prospect to Washington while Zimmerman is there)
5) What type of prospect does the selling team seek? (Does the player fit into the new team’s mold i.e. Oakland wants players who have a high obp, pitchers with a low whip)
6) If the team is determined sellers, are they actually looking to trade this player? (is he on the untouchable list, cost controlled talent, is a backup ready to step in and take his place)

These seem like some basic guidelines to follow. If anyone has more they would like to add, feel free.

Why do people feel the need to be so snippy?

Outside of the fact that I generally don’t like it when someone uses terms like ludicrous, I do have issues with your list:

1) There are times when teams that don’t exactly look they should be sellers do in fact make trades that we look at and go “huh?’ If that team feels like possibly the player they get in return could make them a better team. Who knows, maybe the Red Sox would like to have Todd and Anderson in the future. They have an ancient catcher and everyone is always looking out for pitching.
2) This one actually makes too much sense to argue with.
3) Almost every trade can fill a need on your current team. Just because it may not look like it is needed on the big league club doesn’t mean that a trade does not fill a need for depth, and or future bargaining chips. Does management always state that they are searching for a certain position to be filled? Sometimes you take the best talent and move from there.
4) Prospects almost always benefit the other team. Just because someone is being blocked does’;t mean that they can’t be moved to fill yet another need that team may need.
5) Even though we all think Oakland likes those types of players, I doubt they would pass up a high ceiling talent that didn’t quite fit that mold. I think the numbers of prospects that they have acquired and turned around and flipped makes that point. I would be shocked if most teams didn’t think that way.
6) The only thing I would add to this point is that sometimes people are labeled untouchable when they really aren’t.

I just think it is in bad form to call something that someone has put an effort into doing ludicrous. The point that was made would have been just as effective without that one word. The rest of the argument you put forward is the kind of stuff I believe this kind of blog was made for.

Your first argument makes sense, but I did state that there are exceptions to that rule.

The third argument makes sense, from a seller’s viewpoint. If you are a buyer at the deadline, generally, you make moves to improve your team for the playoff push, not to stock your farm system. Adding an outfielder to a team that currently has one of the best prospects in the game waiting and one of the most productive outfields in baseball currently does not make sense.

I picked Oakland and the way they look for players with high OBP. such as Daric Barton in the Mulder deal or Josh Donaldson in the recent Harden deal. The A’s would take on a person outside of the mold if they were being overpaid for what they are giving up.

I understand that untouchable players are not always untouchable, but do you really want to read about how the Cards could acquire a player tagged as untouchable? I just feel that rule would keep the “proposals” logical.

In regards to being “bad form to call something that someone has put an effort into doing ludicrous,” I feel that I am justified because I don’t think a whole lot of effort was put into this fanpost. A lack of contract info or statistics and poor grammar (beyond normal mistakes/typos) lead me to believe that there was not much effort placed into the fanpost.

Rasmus > Ellsbury

Rasmus will be our lead off hitter / center fielder. Ellsbury offers nothing that we don’t already get from Ankiel or Ludwick, in fact, i’d say both of them are better players.

i hope rasmus

is not our leadoff hitter. better suited for a 2 or 5 spot.

Rasmus is a leadoff hitter

in the mold of Grady Sizemore.

Oh

So he’s a leadoff hitter who shouldn’t be hitting leadoff?

by mojowo11 on Jul 14, 2008 9:02 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

wait....

why shouldn’t Sizemore be leading off? Because he doesn’t have traditional “leadoff” numbers? Explain yourself so I can have a chance to refute your argument. :-)

He shouldn't be leading off because he's their premiere player

And should be given all possible chances to drive in runs. He should be batting either second or third, probably. The guy’s got a .913 OPS, leads the team in homers. He shouldn’t be batting leadoff for the same reason that Pujols shouldn’t bat leadoff—they are the run producers, and you need to get guys on in front of them…although it’s true that the difference is probably smaller in the AL, where he’s not hitting right after the pitcher in the lineup.

I’d bat him second.

by mojowo11 on Jul 14, 2008 1:20 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He's a completely different type of player than those two

but I do agree that we don’t need him. Let’s keep Rasmus.

and he's not as good as either right now

we don’t need another non power hitter, especially not for our outfield.

Ellsbury

Ellsbury is a nice little player with a fairly low ceiling. The Epstein man-crush is, to me, a bit misplaced, considering the guy’s peak is probably a slappy, high-OBP, fast leadoff man, maybe a poor-man’s Ichiro or Johnny Damon or something. His production is on par with Schumaker’s, and in some ways inferior, and is significantly below that of Ludwick and Ankiel. Considering he would be replacing one of these three, and likely blocking Rasmus in some way, I see no real scenario in which acquiring him is to the BOB’s advantage. He would cost more than he’s worth in terms of prospects as well, compounding the costly nature of his acquisition. However, this is one of the more unrealistic scenarios I’ve seen, considering that the Sox would not part with him as part of any package for Johan Santana, arguably the best pitcher in the game right now. The guy isn’t leaving unless it’s in a pine box.

Another issue I have here is the overall sloppiness of this post. I am not generally the grammar police, as I realize this is an internet forum. Most mistakes are honest ones that just kind of happen. However, this post possesses two sentence-ending punctuation marks in its entire body. It comes across as a stream-of-consciousness poured out onto a keyboard and then sent off. It is distracting and in no real way adds to any kind of intelligent baseball discussion. If I seem curt, I apologize and do not mean to personally disparage the author in any way. I do feel, however, that we as posters have a responsibility to maintain the high standards of this forum that lboros, azruavatar, the red baron, and houstoncardinal have set.

counterpoint

Of course this is a baseball forum, not an English class. As I said, I normally wouldn’t care too much b/c everyone, myself included, makes grammar mistakes while posting on this site. However, I draw the line when someone bangs out a post like this one. The Fan Post section is intended to stimulate discussion on topics other than those in the main post, so if you’re going to take the time to start one, shouldn’t you present it in a clear manner? If you’re trying to prove a point, shouldn’t you make sure you get rid of ANYTHING that distracts a reader from your argument? In this case, he may have a good point or a good idea, but nobody can really tell b/c it’s typed in the form of one or two run-on sentences.

I agree

it’s not too difficult to oraganize a little especially when writing a fan post. We’re asked to have standards in our fanposts, as in have something with substance and though-out. Why should grammar (or at least ease of reading) be any different? if it were a reply to someone, I wouldn’t have as much of a problem with it. But if you’re going to take the time to post a fan post, and not take the time to make it easy for people to read, then why should I respect what’s in it? There aren’t a whole lot of standards (gramatically) around here. And it’s fun sometimes to point out mis-spellings and stuff even though we all know most of ‘em are simply mistakes. This wasn’t a mistake and ended up being rather painful to read.
