Game 96 Open Thread: July 13 2008

St. Louis @ Pittsburgh

Pineiro Snell
3-4, 4.17 3-7, 5.84

if they win today, the cards will be 10 games over .500 at the all-star break for the first time since 2005 --- and for just the 4th time in la russa's 13 seasons as the st. louis manager.

snell is one of the best baseball players ever born in the state of delaware . . . . he has won only once since april 12; his era is 6.34 over that span, and hitters have pounded him for a .932 ops. of course, pineiro has one only once in nearly as long a span (since april 29), but he's not pitching that badly --- 4.34 era, .803 ops against.

Anyone interested...

I believe I just saw our very own Jesse Todd warming up in the Yankees bullpen in the Futures Game. So he is probably coming in now. It’s on ESPN….

Fastest pitch he threw was 89

And every pitch wasn’t a cutter. I thought he had more juice than that.

fernando salas

replaced garcia on the world roster

by Phizzle on Jul 13, 2008 1:45 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Rasmus is on the DL

but he was selected. Also, Salas is pitching for the World team.

by punditmoi on Jul 13, 2008 1:45 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Rasmus and Garica were going to be in it

But Rasmus is on the DL and Garica is now with the big club.

by Evilfrog on Jul 13, 2008 1:45 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Right

I forgot about Garcia. Thanks.

by punditmoi on Jul 13, 2008 1:45 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

so guys who were invited are

salas, garcia, rasmus, anderson and todd. pretty good…anyone else got 5 guys invited to play?

by lopey986 on Jul 13, 2008 1:52 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Just from a quick look at the game

it looked like there were 10-15 A’s players. Really, though, I saw at least 3-4 on one team, so I assume they have at least 5.

Per Rotoworld re: Rasmus

Colby Rasmus – OF Jul. 12 – 10:59 am et

Colby Rasmus met with team doctors in St. Louis on Friday about continuing soreness in his groin.
The medical staff was able to rule out a sports hernia and are calling it a groin strain. Rasmus hasn’t played since July 1, but should resume baseball activites on Thursday.

so did they give an update on Ank this morning?

rolled his ankle

last night…didn’t really say much about it. i was wondering if there was an update as well but i didn’t see anything on rotoworld this morning.

gahhh

we coulda had an ank highlight reel diving catch right there.

by lopey986 on Jul 13, 2008 1:51 PM EDT   0 recs

I know it. I don't even think he would have had to dive.

I like him playing shallow. Those little dinks get caught instead of the opposition getting cheap hits.

Anyone else surprised Yadi's playing today?

I thought we’d see LaRue

If the Pirates wouldn't have lost all those games against the Cubs

earlier this year…they would be a contender right now. They sure do play us tough. If they had a little better pitching they would be in the thick of things.

Someone needs to step up and get some momentum back

everyone looks lethargic out there today.

It is Pujols’ and Yadi’s team … they need to be the leaders and turn the momentum around.

Dunc saw one strike

and looked at it…......... he is just guessing.

Westcoastbirdwatcher

by westcoastbirdwatcher on Jul 13, 2008 2:10 PM EDT   0 recs

he saw 3 stikes

pitches 7 and 5 were stikes. Pitch number 2 was also boarded line.

by Evilfrog on Jul 13, 2008 2:16 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

No change there.

He has just been guessing all year. When he gets a strike down the middle and takes it, he spins out of the box all disgusted.

The kid cannot recognize a pitch to hit before it hits the catchers glove. For a power hitter, that is simply unacceptable at any level of organized ball. But, Duncan is a special case apparently. I guess it is his defense that keeps him on the MLB roster.

by Egyptian on Jul 13, 2008 2:17 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

hm
if they win today, the cards will be 10 games over .500 at the all-star break for the first time since 2005

i guess this is nitpicking, but what is the point of a “first time since…” statistic if it refers to three seasons ago?

That's five strikeouts by Snell

I can’t see it on tv, is he just on top of his game today or are the Cards hitters just sucking?

yadi

seeing the ball well lately, eh?

crime that he’s not going to NY

by Pitchers Hit Eighth on Jul 13, 2008 2:32 PM EDT   0 recs

It worries me that he is not an all star

I am not sure how much better Yadi is going to do and he was really not all that close this year.

by Egyptian on Jul 13, 2008 2:35 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

why does everyone

put so much stock into a player being an “all-star”...it has nothing to do with stats at all. hell, ken griffey jr. was almost a starter.

by lopey986 on Jul 13, 2008 2:36 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

just a nice thing

for the player

a “validation” of sorts – we all know Yadi deserves it, want him to get recognition from the league

by Pitchers Hit Eighth on Jul 13, 2008 2:37 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

but it isn't

recognition from the league…it is recognition from a bunch of fans who just vote for all their favorite players regardless of their level of play.

by lopey986 on Jul 13, 2008 2:38 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

good point

that’s why I still don’t understand the hating on Ludwick’s selection

the players picked him – that’s gotta mean something, right?

by Pitchers Hit Eighth on Jul 13, 2008 2:41 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

honestly

being chosen as a reserve player for the all star team is more validating than being chosen as a starter.

makes sense

cause there aren’t 25 votes per person there :)
