Game 96 Open Thread: July 13 2008

St. Louis Cardinals at Pittsburgh Pirates, Jul 13, 2008 1:35 PM EDT

Pineiro Snell
3-4, 4.17 3-7, 5.84

if they win today, the cards will be 10 games over .500 at the all-star break for the first time since 2005 --- and for just the 4th time in la russa's 13 seasons as the st. louis manager.

snell is one of the best baseball players ever born in the state of delaware . . . . he has won only once since april 12; his era is 6.34 over that span, and hitters have pounded him for a .932 ops. of course, pineiro has one only once in nearly as long a span (since april 29), but he's not pitching that badly --- 4.34 era, .803 ops against.

I believe I just saw our very own Jesse Todd warming up in the Yankees bullpen in the Futures Game. So he is probably coming in now. It’s on ESPN….

Fastest pitch he threw was 89

And every pitch wasn’t a cutter. I thought he had more juice than that.

Just from a quick look at the game

it looked like there were 10-15 A’s players. Really, though, I saw at least 3-4 on one team, so I assume they have at least 5.

Per Rotoworld re: Rasmus

Colby Rasmus – OF Jul. 12 – 10:59 am et

Colby Rasmus met with team doctors in St. Louis on Friday about continuing soreness in his groin.
The medical staff was able to rule out a sports hernia and are calling it a groin strain. Rasmus hasn’t played since July 1, but should resume baseball activites on Thursday.

No change there.

He has just been guessing all year. When he gets a strike down the middle and takes it, he spins out of the box all disgusted.

The kid cannot recognize a pitch to hit before it hits the catchers glove. For a power hitter, that is simply unacceptable at any level of organized ball. But, Duncan is a special case apparently. I guess it is his defense that keeps him on the MLB roster.

Fanfest

I just got back from fanfest in NYC. I highly recommend it for those in STL area next year. It was a lot of fun for my two and a half year old. Amidst thousands of people, I only saw three Cardinal hats. There were hundreds of kids with either Wright, Reyes, Jeter or Rodriguez shirts. My kid’s Pujols shirt was just one of two that I saw.

bahahaha

am checkin out Stubhub for some Cardinals tickets and i noticed their little description for the Cardinals and it gave me quite a chuckle.

With Albert Pujols, Chris Duncan and Rick Ankiel leading the way, the St. Louis Cardinals certainly have the firepower to turn heads in the NL Central this season.

I’m finding it hard to have a reason to keep Schu out of the daily lineup, regardless of starter, or any other circumstance

He doesn't hit lefties very well

If Barton was still around, I’d find it hard to make an argument against starting him over skippy

hard to argue that

I hate Duncan versus lefties – he’s no better than Schu

No kidding

But TLR seems set on playing Dunc against Lefties with Kennedy leading off instead of Schu and no one knows why

He guessed right.

Just hit it at someone. It was a little high to do too much with.

That is a good example of where Pujols (well, not the Pujols of the last couple weeks) would have laid off even though he guessed right and waited for a better pitch.

by Pitchers Hit Eighth on Jul 13, 2008 3:00 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

why?

the only reason i’d be hesitant to take him is because of his opt-out following this season…making him a possible 1 year rental. the guy has got skill and is finally healthy and is pitching far better than his 5 era shows.

by lopey986 on Jul 13, 2008 3:01 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

is he

left-handed? does he pitch in the bullpen?

if neither answer is yes, we’re not solving the biggest issue with this team

by Pitchers Hit Eighth on Jul 13, 2008 3:03 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

in your opinion

the bigger issue to me is wether or not the rotation is going to hold up. the bullpen will be a moot point if we have to keep bringing up minor leaguers who aren’t even close to ready for mlb action to start.

by lopey986 on Jul 13, 2008 3:04 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

agreed

you’re right – in my opinion – but the team has had injuries and questions in the rotation all season – and made it through

the bullpen has had questions and horrible performance all season – no answers

by Pitchers Hit Eighth on Jul 13, 2008 3:06 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i understand both sides

the bullpen/rotation arguments both have good points. i don’t think we need a loogy (villone has been decent) as badly as we need a closer or a good starter. honestly, a loogy can’t cost us that much (someone like ron mahay) and we should be able to get a closer or starter as well.

seems larussa is more worried about the lineup than the pitching so it may be a moot argument.

by lopey986 on Jul 13, 2008 3:09 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

probably justified

if I had a choice between a big bat or any pitcher right now, I’d go for the bat

by Pitchers Hit Eighth on Jul 13, 2008 3:10 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

the only hitter

that has been mentioned with the cardinals that i would want is Matt Holliday and it seems more likely the Rays will get him.

What does everyone think

of the NHL-style USA vs. the World format in the futures game?

I guess it’d be too complicated to split ‘em up by parent club league, and PCL vs. IL wouldn’t be too interesting to the average fan.

What is the deal there?

Why not more trade talk with him?

i haven’t heard them say he isn’t…hardly anyone is untouchable in this league anymore…but bay and nady just seem to be the pirate names kicked around the most at this point for whatever reason.

by lopey986 on Jul 13, 2008 3:10 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well, if he is available possibly, isn't it worth our time to at least inquire?

Skip and Sanchez getting on base for Pujols and saving Ank or Ludwick for 4th and 5th with Glaus 6th sounds a heck of a lot better to me than what we currently have when Aaron Miles is batting 7th.

I don’t think it would take too much to get him either. Maybe Jess Todd and Reyes & Dunc.
