that is just about the saddest loss i can remember in my 40 years of watching the cardinals.
i appreciate that most people are venting their frustrations appropriately.

it’s gonna take a stretch of poor play…the only problem is that will probably mean some of our players will start to play poorly (lohse, ludwick) and it may diminish their value a bit.

Soria was out of baseball the ENTIRE 2005 season before San Diego signed him. KC picked him up from the Padres in the Rule V. Meanwhile, Jocketty was giving Mulder 13.5 million

I agree, we should do the following:
Offer Lohse 3/33, if he takes it , sweet, we have a good pitcher locked up reasonable for the next 3 years.
If he doesn’t, trade him. He isn’t guaranteed to be a Type A Free Agent, thus we will lose him and get absolutely NOTHING (I don’t consider a Type B free agent anything worthwhile) in return.
Shop Ludwick around and see if a team like the Rays will bite and overpay a bit for him.

But without good starting pitching
you don’t even get into position to have blown saves. Bullpen arms can be restocked for cheap, number 1 and 2 type pitchers don’t fall out of trees. Adam is more than fine where he is.

I don't like trading for bullpen arms
as tonight proves, they are capable of stabbing you through the heart. We don’t need new personnel, we need our current personnel in the correct roles.
K-mac would be fine in the closer role, IMO, Izzy should be no where near a high leverage situation ever, ever ever again, and the hot hand between Franklin and Perez could be the eigth inning guy.

I'm not talking about blowing up the bullpen..

KMAC is not high high leverage ready. I see a lot of these guys effective in the 6th, 7th or 8th…but we need a closer.

K mac would do fine as a closer
he has a 41-12 K:BB ratio and a 2.74 ERA. He has the skills and the temperament. He is also among the lead leaders in holds, for whatever thats worth (probably not much.)
he could handle it. tonight he was put in a more difficult spot than the typical save, even 1 run save.

I have the Carpenter growth poster in my classroom
We cut it into four pieces then ran it through the laminator. Then duct taped it together on the back and hung it in the back of the room. The kids are always checking their height and I don’t have to worry about it getting torn up. However, I do feel like I’ve been cut into four pieces and run through the laminator right about now.

No.
Although he is one for one in save opportunities….and did have a perfect inning last time he worked out of the pen, and he even got a win.
I want them to quit messing around with this young man. They treat him like he’s not even part of the organization. Time to just go ahead and make him not part of the organization. They don’t think he’s good enough. Fine. Let him get on with his career somewhere else-they might look at him and see what he can do, instead of what he can’t., and proceed from there…...I happen to think it would make a world of difference for him.
You were kidding, anyway, right? Just trying to make me go off, right? Stop it!

he pitched well. Had only given up 2 hits through like 5 innings and left in the 7th having only given up 4 with a big ass lead. Wellemeyer did his job. Acquiring bullpen help
because of tonight’s game would be a huge over reaction. Trading prospects for relievers makes me nauseous. There’s plenty of talent in that bullpen, they just need to get the kinks ironed out.

He should be at least Type B
if he keeps up the way his season’s going. I don’t know their method, but I think it’s a weighted 3-year measure, so how he performs the rest of the year will have a big effect.

That's the thing
he’s most likely not going to be a Type A free agent, since apparently it’s determined by your performance over the last 3 years.
Type B free agent picks aren’t nearly as good as Type A, so you’d be better off trading him to a contender for one or two of their top prospects

but outside of Izzy
it’s not like there’s an obvious candidate to replace. The bullpen has a lot of talent in it, they’ve just suffered random meltdowns from seemingly everyone in the pen. K-Mac has been good. Chris Perez has the potential to be as good as anyone you acquire—and a veteran has the capability of blowing up too so let’s not cite experience. Franklin has, despite my continued statistical concerns, been decent. Springer has been effective when healthy. Villone dominates lefties.
It’s one thing to rail against they’re results. It’s another to single one of them out and prove that a player acquired via trade would be a real upgrade over them.
by azruavatar on Jul 13, 2008 12:52 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
plus the majority of blown saves has to belong to Izzy and Franklin, right?

Right now a lot of guys would be better than Izzy...
Not to take anything away from McClouth and his homerun, he’s been a great player for Pittsburgh. The question in my mind is Izzy in ill health now or are we witnessing TLR’s pending separation anxiety from the greatest closer that he has ever had? The whole Izzy/TLR thing seems off. I don’t know why he is on the roster. When he does pitch well its with smoke and mirrors(correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t his velocity down and isn’t he reliant mainly on breaking balls that used to be his # 2 or 3 pitch?)...he’ll have to reinvent himself again to get hitters out on a consistent basis. I’m one of the fans that actually thinks this team has a chance to do it all this year (we have 4 hitters with the possibility of 100 RBIs and a great defense!)...but I have little to no faith in the committee that TLR has assembled. In playoff caliber baseball, these guys all get torched….bigtime IMHO. K Mac and Perez are too green yet. So….I really do think ONE GUY in the pen can make a difference. Whether its Waino, Carp or some outside help, something has to be done. Wellmeyer pitched 2 hit ball tonight until the 6th. So we have Lohse, Piniero, Wellmeyer and sometimes Loop as very decent starters…plus Waino and possibly Carp….GEEZ just one more pitcher please! We seem close.

So in first grade
It was tell about your dad day. Most of the kids came up and said “my daddy’s a doctor” or “my daddy’s a lawyer” or anything like that. Then, it was little Billy’s turn. Little Billy got up in front of his whole class and said “my daddy is an exotic dancer for other men. He performs sex shows for other men and then goes home with them and takes money to do what they ask him to!” His teacher was very shocked, and took him out in the hall. “Why did you say such things?” she said to little Billy. “Well, really, my dad is a Cubs player, but I was too embarrassed to say it in front of the class.”

I was there, IT WAS AWESOME
Aaron Miles is my new favorite player. If that little guy with no athletic ability and no real talent whatsoever can be a major league infielder, there is hope for every talentless hack out there.
There was a group of 40-something Cardinals fans behind us sitting at the game and they called it the minute Izzy came in the game. The one guy, harden by life, leaned over to me and said ….what do you think it’ll be, a walk, a single and a homerun? We both know this will be a 1 run game before it’s all said and done.
As soon as McClouth hit it, we both busted out laughing.
See, cause it’s too humorous to hurt. Aaron Miles being terrible, Rick Ankiel getting hurt, Jason Isringhausen and Ryan Franklin sucking monkey balls to even make it a ball game. Just too damn funny.

The love of my life was so angry
she kept saying stuff like “If these guys blow this, I’m going to cry”, “I can’t believe Izzaloser, I will never stick up for that guy ever again!” “These guys make me never want to cheer for any of them ever again, not even Miles.”
Which means a lot because she loves cheering for those guys, mostly just to make me angry that someone cheers for Aaron Miles to play everyday.
I just kept saying to her, “I’m not even mad. I was expecting this. As soon as Franklin came in the game, I was expecting this. You don’t remember the pain of the 2006 collapse. Trust me, I’m just laughing right now thinking of the excuses Al Hrbosky is making up or what imaginary injury Tony is going to give Izzy.”
Because, it is funny if you think about it. We had 30 some men on base tonight and lost. That’s a riot.

had two Cardinals on it, Molina and Ankiel, that helped the offense go 14/37 with 8 runs, 11 RBIs and a .378 average.
