Cuban defector called immediately from AA Altoona. ~5.5k/9 in AA. Made one start in AAA indianapolis and did ok. Looks like he doesn’t walk guys very often, so his might have ok control. i’m gessing he has mediocre stuff.

Haiku

I’m going back to the haikus for now. I do two in a row, we win. I stop, and we lose. That’s all the proof I need.

For your further edification, though, here’s a little more info on Mr. Herrera.

His player page at first inning.

He’a a Cuban defector that the Pirates signed in 2006.

He’s thrown only seven innings in Triple A in his career, amassing a 3.83 FIP with a 6/1 K/BB rate.

From the Baseball America 2008 Handbook:

“Though he had performed well with the powerful Cuban national team, Herrera didn’t show that same kind of ability in his pro debut last season. His fastball sat at 84-86 mph, six mph slower than his heyday in Cuba, and his curveball and splitter lacked sharpness. He also lost confidence in his fastball and kep throwing his curve early in the count instead of trying to establish his heater.”

Looking at his results this year, without digging for any other scouting reports, I would think that he’s probably regained some of his previous stuff. He hadn’t pitched competitively since 2004 prior to his pro debut, so I imagine he may be back on track a bit more. Still, even at his best, he’s never been overpowering, so the Cards should be able to hit the guy.

Why don't you just make like a tree, and get out of here?

Duncan in RF and Ludwick in LF? Is because it seems like RF in Pittsburgh is pretty run of the mill and LF is a little kooky?

Is Jason Bay the only Pirate we’re looking into? Cause….I don’t think he’s THAT much better than Duncan. And I’m not really a Duncan fan at all, I just want to trade for someone actually worthwhile

by voltronchris on Jul 12, 2008 6:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Lefty's Marte, Grabow, and Burnett

I would also like Jack Wilson back (yes I would) or Jose Bautista for Glaus insurance (he usually makes an annual trip to the DL)

Hey, if they are so desperate for starting pitching that they are starting a fellow after one AAA start, surely they would take the unwanted one and Brad Thompson off or our hands, no?

Bay is solid-I’m just not sure that he’s a difference maker…..Nady has been injury prone his whole career-I say pass. Now this McLouth fellow, I like. He can play corners too…..I bet the Pirates like him too and won’t give him to us.

She isn't crazy, she's just not impressed.

Cable Question

How much do you guys pay for cable? I just finally ordered cable and haven’t had it in 2 years. Missed baseball too much though. Mostly just used the antenna for Sat and Sun games. I convinced Charter to give me the basic FSN and ESPN package for $24.99.

by FlimtotheFlam on Jul 12, 2008 6:45 PM EDT reply actions

Is that all you got, or did you have to pay for a base package too?

B/c that’s a great deal if that’s all you have.

Patiently awaiting Mulder's return, circa 2012

by dan on Jul 12, 2008 6:49 PM EDT up reply actions

No that is the base package

I got like 100 channels or so but all I care about is FSN and ESPN. I have a pretty bad ass Home Theater Computer setup. So I mostly watch movies and TV shows. I just download whatever I want off usenet. I was using MyP2P to watch Cardinal games but I needed something more reliable.

They first tried to sell it for me for $52.99 but I negotiated it down to $24.99.

Secret to Negotiating

The secret to Negotiating is pretend you absolutely love what ever you are trying to buy but are too broke to afford it. What I did this time was just checked around prices with satellite. The cheapest package I could find was $29.99 a month with a ton of restrictions plus charges. So I just told them the cheapest I found was $24.99.

by FlimtotheFlam on Jul 12, 2008 6:58 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah, I'm a prick

I tend to get mad and end up not buying anything. After I rant and rave for a while I go downstairs turn on ESPN and my wife calls back and pays full price. It is a pretty ugly situation.

hey, who pissed in the Kool-Aid tonight?

I’m joining late, going through the comments. It sure looks from the stats that the Colonel is pitching a great game (1 hit, 1 BB, which happened to be consecutive, and happened to be a homer), averaging 14 pitches an inning. And the offense seems to be owning this rookie.

Why so negative tonight everybody?

by tom s. on Jul 12, 2008 8:15 PM EDT reply actions

The first inning was bad

He was throwing everything down the middle, and all the outs were flyballs to the warning track. It looked bad from the onset.

Rockies Scout in the Stands

I assume some ppl heard that there is a Rockies scout in the stands observing tonight. Let me throw this out there: Rasmus, Bryan Anderson, and a couple other guys for Holliday and probably a minor league prospect. Molina is not going anywhere and Holliday is young enough to be around for a while as well. Anyone hear any rumors or have a heads up on any trades?

by mbelang on Jul 12, 2008 8:27 PM EDT reply actions

i would not be able to be on here for the rest of the season

if that trade happened. Rasmus would be enough to piss me off, but Rasmus , Anderson , and others. ugh.
Anderson, (spare ML roster OF Duncan/Skip) another second tier prospect. Maybe

nahhh

Rasmus isn’t anywhere near ready to come up. The guy’s numbers are disgusting for where he should be. Anderson is getting traded away. I dont see the point in holding onto a guy that good when you have a catcher like Yadi. Too much trade value to waste.

I got to see him at ST

He’s gonna be a big part of this team, probably before August is over.

The team needs him to come up and have success, if only to convince the fanbase that The Plan is going to work.

by liam on Jul 12, 2008 8:44 PM EDT up reply actions

no

I would not include Rasmus in a deal for Holliday, he isn’t worth it. His numbers outside Coors aren’t anything spectacular plus we won’t be able to re-sign him after next season

not a huge fan of Fuentes

Guy seems like he has one or two things wrong in his head. Then again it seems like if he did have some problems Dave Duncan has a 99.99% chance of working them out

by mbelang on Jul 12, 2008 8:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Let's think about this for a minute...

If Rockies have scouts at the game tonight, doesn’t that mean they are looking at guys on the Cardinals… not guys like Rasmus, Anderson, etc.

I”m not saying they don’t want Rasmus or Anderson but if they are watching tonight, it only makes sense that they want one of our current guys.

I'm not sure if anyone mentioned this, but...

there seems to be a pattern when STL plays PIT. To wit:

4/23 = PIT
4/24 = STL
5/13 = PIT
5/14 = STL
5/15 = PIT
5/30 = STL
5/31 = PIT
6/01 = STL
6/02 = PIT
7/11 = STL

Let’s hope we break the chain tonight!
