It didn't use to be this way

used to be we had a very talented team that could overcome my bad luck. Now, I’m too much of a tipping point.

The only way we win now is when Gary Bennett kicks the ball out of the catcher’s glove at homeplate.

by Hardcore Legend on Jul 11, 2008 8:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Ditto

We won both of the Cards-Giants games I went to in SF in August (or maybe July) 2004, just none of the ones I’ve been to since then.

The first 2004 game was particularly fun because we were behind early on and when we started to come back a Cubs fan sitting behind me just started shaking his head, saying “This Cards team. They just find a way to win. Depressing.” Those were good times.

dude, it's a slump. Every single person in the MIF has gone through it.

It doesn’t make any sense to bust on Kennedy one month, Iz2 the next, and Ryan the next. They’re all slappy singles hitters. Come on, three weeks ago, the board was aflutter with talk of replacing Izturis with Ryan as the starter.

by tom s. on Jul 11, 2008 8:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe it's a slump

and maybe we just have three middle infielders who can’t hit.

well, I definitely agree we could use some help in the MIF,

but since we need both a 2B and an SS each night, we gotta play at least one of the three. so I don’t see why Ryan is so much worse than the alternative.

The reason for all of the lineup combinations is due to one thing

We’re required to have three spots per night that gives away outs. Per Mo and Co. Therefore we are trying to be so creative to hide this very obligation on a game by game basis.

is that like a handicap in golf? is that one of the new MLB parity programs?

for every year out of the last five your team has gone to the postseason, you have to carry that many batters with an OPS of less than .650?

We don't try to hide it very well

didn’t we have one night vs a LHP: Kennedy, Pitcher, Ryan, Skippy, Miles all in a row?

Roberts is off the market

and I’d rather have another guy that hits 30 HRs this season and worry about a ‘leadoff hitter’ than have a leadoff hitter that can’t hit LHP and won’t hit 10 HRs.

by Hardcore Legend on Jul 11, 2008 9:11 PM EDT up reply actions

we already have 4 30-plus homer guys and rasmus on the way next year. 2B is a black hole for us right now and presumably will be next year also. MIF needs an upgrade, not the OF. If they add Bay, they still have the same 2 holes in the lineup that they have now. Skip hasn’t really been an issue this year, and he’s just holding a spot for Rasmus

Garcia

14 fastballs
2 curveballs
2 changeups

He doesn’t get a significant velo split on his changeup either according to gameday coming it at 83-84 while his fastball is sitting 87-89. The curveball actually comes in around 76-77. All in all, a fine first inning for Jaime Garcia but I still wonder if this is the most effective development of Garcia.

Honestly

It’s the 9th inning. Favorfull match up. Tony likes his bench playersto get involved. And we havent seen much of him lately.

Two innings, two lead off batters on. Garcia promises to carry on the tradition. . .

You hate to see that

Oswalt is as “gamer” as they come, but the injuries are starting to catch up to him. I’d love to see him stay healthy all year—except maybe against us.

Inning 2

13 fastballs
1 curveball
1 changeup

those secondary pitches are going to fall by the wayside if he just mops up once ever 3 days. Regardless it was a nice outing resultswise for Garcia.

Congrats on your first big league outs kiddo.

man why did they let cameron advance with no throw?

defensive indifference is the stupidest tactic in baseball.

Sure would love to see Welley get his groove back tomorrow night

Having Lohse throwing the way he is and getting Welley back to his April/May style would make the whole rotation situation seem considerably less stomach-churning.

Of course, so would having Pineiro build on the momentum from his last start and having Looper get a little more consistency. And I guess while I’m hoping out of my ass, I hope they run off five consecutive complete game shutouts after the all star break (the fifth by Thompson, who changes his ways and starts hugging puppies, or at the very least kicking kittens instead), then I hope Wainwright gets off the DL early to pitch a no-hitter and hit a grand slam in his first game back.

Also, I hope it starts raining bourbon.

coughs up a loss, his counterparts looked good tonight for oakland..gallagher got the win against the Angels going 7 strong, and murton had a good game too. It’s one game but still, I hope this trade bites the cubbies

wow

what an incredibly awful sweater Bowden is wearing in that picture... someone should investigate THAT.

That article offends me very much because based on the actual factual content, there is no reason to believe Bowden was involved in skimming or fraud- but the headline and first few paragraphs make it look like he was. All he seems to have done was cooperate with the agencies investigating other people, which doesn’t match what Fainaru-Wada leads with.

After the hack job that was “game of shadows” i am amazed that Fainaru-Wada has a job doing anything related to sports. Unfortunately, this article is a ridiculous piece of character assassination that seems to have even less factual backing, imho. It looks like he is desperately scrambling for an angle that will make his quasi-journalism relevant again.

I was out at a bar.

Good game tonight. I though It would have been nice to let Lohse try for a perfect game, but I guess that would have been a bit silly. I thought Garcia did a pretty good job considering it was his debut. It feels good to finally win one, especially after the loss yesterday!
